Abstract

This paper examines the morphological changes of Depok City in one century (1920- 2020) by using a morphological component approach of land use, road patterns, and building patterns. This study used the historical method, which includes four stages: heuristics, criticism, interpretation, and historiography. The results showed that the morphological growth of Depok City showed significant growth and changes. The land use of Depok City in the last century has shown changes with an increase in the residential, trade, and service sectors, and industry, on the other hand, a reduction in the agricultural and plantation sectors. The street pattern network of Depok City shows a change from a linear pattern to a spinal pattern and currently has a mixed pattern. The building pattern that was previously linear then spread to cover almost the entire Depok area. The residential, religious, and colonial-style agricultural products storage buildings are now developing into modern-style residential.

Abstract

The history of architectural theory can be seen as a debate between those who place more emphasis on form than function. or vice versa. It is around these themes that the differences between the architects of the late 19th century and the Modernists are best understood. Then came the architects of the postmodern period, in about the last quarter of the 20th century, who added aspects of meaning and considered them important in architecture. This paper aims to understand the form-function-meaning relation in architecture in the case of Kampong Aquarium, Jakarta, Indonesia, with an architectural qualitative descriptive method. The results of the study show that there has been a significant change in the form-function-meaning of Kampong Aquarium, especially since the evictions in 2016. Because the phenomenon of Architectural Change (form-function-meaning relationship) Kampong Aquarium is relatively new, there has not been much research on it. So that this research is expected to open up opportunities for further research with the same theme.

Abstract

This qualitative study aims to discover the pivotal factors in housing transitions of Indonesian career women through their life-course events. In Indonesian patriarchal society, women have been struggling to participate in the decision-making process of home making despite their dominant role in everyday domestic activities and thorough understanding of their familial needs. A semi structured interview with seven career women was delivered to examine their housing transitions and the prominent factors of their current housing choice. Through thematic content analysis, this study concludes that the types of employment is the prominent factor of their financial empowerment through their housing transitions, especially for those who are public servants and private employees. Thus, encouraging equal job opportunities for women in their young adult phase would increase household’s affordability to obtain homeownership.

Abstract

One of the most important aspect in architecture is the selection of exterior material. This materialsurface faces directly with building’s surrounding climate and environment, transferring the heat through its wall and roof significantly so it requires more consideration from the planners. Widely use of glasses as building’s exterior impacts its heat absorbing thereby it needs more power for air conditioning in order to keep the interior temperature productively workable. The objective of this research is to observe the impact between glass partition and interior thermal condition, how the habitants react, and also the ideal temperature for both users and building’s OTTV. Correlational research combines results from thermal observation and user’s perceptionin order to get its convenience thermal condition and to know its OTTV so we can issue the standard

Abstract

This research investigates the segregation phenomenon that occurs in Jakarta through the lens of the Batavia Canal, exploring its historical and urbanistic role in shaping the social structure and spatial planning of the city. By focusing on developments over time, this study aims to provide an in-depth understanding of how the canals in Batavia, which characterized the city during colonial times, played a role in establishing the segregation patterns that can be observed today. The research methodology involves historical analysis of canals, literature research, and postcolonial discourse analysis to reveal the correlation between canal structures and segregation patterns in Jakarta's urban space. These findings were integrated with interviews and a participatory approach to understand local community perspectives on the perceived impacts of segregation. The research results highlight how the canals in Batavia are not only physical but also symbolic elements in the formation of urban space. Over time, these canals can become associated with social and economic divisions, creating inequalities in access to city resources and services. The implications of these findings provide a basis for deep introspection into Jakarta's current urban spatial challenges, demonstrating the need for inclusiveness-oriented urban planning to overcome persistent segregation. Thus, this research encourages awareness of the complexity of interactions between physical and social elements in Jakarta's urban space. Directed towards solutions based on an understanding of history and contemporary reality, this study is expected to provide valuable insights for more holistic, equitable and sustainable urban planning in the future.

Abstract

This study attempts to unveil the interrelationships between marital and housing tenure status of female adolescents and adults in Jakarta province. Although gender equality becomes one of the prioritized sustainable development goals, the housing tenure of female adolescents and adults, according to their current marital status, is rarely examined for ensuring their tenure security and improvement of well-being. The employed mixed-method research with sequential quantitative-qualitative methods delivers the crosstab analysis to identify the majority of types of housing tenure according to the marital status of 289 female respondents, and axial coding from interviews with the selected respondents to understand the interrelationship between their marital and housing status. The result highlights that life-course events such as entering marriage, parenthood, and marriage dissolution lead to housing mobility and tenure changes, which are driven by financial capacity for meeting physiological and psychological needs. It emphasizes the meaning of a house for women as a haven for physical and psychological refuge, rather than a mere representation of social status. It complements the academic conversation on the gender-related topic of housing and also enriches the housing policy, planning, and design to meet the objective of the gender equality program according to sustainable development goals.

Abstract

This research aims to discover the reasons for the reasons for homeownership for the younger generations with vertical housing preferences in the Greater Jakarta Metropolitan Area (GJMA). Indonesia's population, which is dominated by the millennial and Z generations, has led to an increase in housing needs. The housing preferences of the younger generation based on their characteristics and lifestyle in megapolitan cities are suitable for vertical housing. Quantitative methods were used on 807 respondents in Indonesia with a five-point Likert scale and several open-ended questions about hobbies, reasons for owning a house, and perceived difficulties in owning a house. The results of descriptive statistical analysis and cross-tab analysis of the tabulated primary data-based coding show that the characteristics and lifestyles of the younger generation, as well as housing values, are more dominant. Identification of the factors associated with the characteristics that fall into the category of housing values was done through multiple linear regression analysis. The results of this study inform the level of importance of homeownership among young people with vertical housing preferences in urban and suburban areas within marital status classifications. This study contributes to the improvement of future housing policies for Millennials and Gen Z.
