Abstract

Public space is a crucial element in urban design, especially in coastal settlements, because it acts as a main factor in controlling development and creating a balance between land development and the social needs of the community. Rapid urbanization in Batam causes environmental degradation and unplanned changes in land use, limiting public access to public spaces. This research aims to identify and analyze how public space can be used effectively as an instrument to control sustainable development in Tanjung Uma. This research uses descriptive qualitative methods to analyze the role of public space in managing city growth and maintaining socio-economic balance and environmental sustainability in Kampung Tua Tanjung Uma, Batam. The research results show that the main challenges are limited accessibility, decreased environmental quality, and minimal public space facilities. Strategies for revitalizing public spaces, increasing accessibility and optimizing spatial planning are proposed to support sustainable development and improve community welfare, by involving local communities in managing public spaces.

Abstract

Scholars have observed that residents who perceive their neighbourhoods as unsafe may become eventually distant, reducing their sense of attachment, community participation and pride in their surroundings. This study examines how perceived personal risk of victimization can impact place attachment in an urban residential area. The study uses quantitative survey method to investigate the relationship. The findings indicate that the most rated element of place attachment is place identity in both types of housing. There is also no significant difference in perceived personal risk of victimization and place attachment in both single and multiple family house types. The findings also indicated that perceived personal risk of victimization is a significant predictor of place attachment in single family neighbourhoods but not in multiple family neighbourhoods. Nonetheless perceived personal risk of victimization is a significant predictor of place attachment in the entire study area.

Abstract

This paper discusses how material story constructs narrative architecture by emphasizing the dynamic dialogue between material and its surroundings. It argues that a story embedded within a material can hold greater importance than its physical form, providing a basis for developing narrative architecture. When material is viewed as something alive, its journey becomes important to study. The story acts as a vehicle to reveal the nature of a material, including the hidden one, allowing other agencies to be part of the story. Focusing on brick materiality as a case study, this paper examines how material responses emerge through interactions between the brick and nature. Based on the grouping of the responses, four material-nature dialogues can be categorized: patterning, reflecting, growing, and nesting. This analysis demonstrates that material story allows materiality to be interpreted narratively, generating multiple stories as a basis for scenarios within narrative architecture, enriching the architectural design process.

Abstract

The increasing air pollution in Indonesia has raised concerns among the public, accompanied by a rise in respiratory diseases. One such disease requiring special attention is asthma, with a prevalence of 7%. Asthma is a chronic condition that can be potentially fatal if not properly managed, triggered by allergens and the psychological condition of the patient. Asthma management in Indonesia still needs improvement in terms of services and education, considering the psychological aspects. Thus, a biophilic architecture approach is needed to enhance the management of psychological aspects in asthma care. The research method involves qualitative and quantitative approaches with the following steps: (1) Synthesis of theory and observation of 10 hospitals with 14 biophilic architecture elements, (2) Collection of data on perceptions of implementing biophilic architecture elements in managing the psychological conditions of asthma patients with 41 respondents, (3) Identification of the management of psychological conditions of asthma patients with biophilic design, (4) Recommendations of biophilic design elements for the psychological healing of asthma patients. The results show that 12 out of 14 biophilic architecture elements are applied in the hospitals studied. Respondents' perceptions indicate that the psychological conditions of asthma patients that need to be managed are mainly dominated by overthinking, followed by anxiety, worry, and fear. Subsequently, biophilic design is derived from these findings to manage asthma patients' conditions by applying biophilic architecture elements in healthcare facilities. This research recommends the implementation of biophilic concepts in healthcare facility design to help manage the psychological conditions of asthma patients.

Abstract

Singapore is a country with diverse cultures, histories, and traditions that blend in culture in Singapore is the Arab Village, located in the Kampong Glam district. The region is known for its rich Malay and Arabic cultural values, and has been an integral part of Singapore's cultural richness for more than a century. Over the past century, the Arab Village has undergone many transformations, both physically and socially. The area, which was once a traditional settlement, has now developed into a bustling commercial and tourist hub. These changes bring their own challenges in maintaining existing heritage values. This research uses a qualitative method with a historical research approach. The historical research approach is an approach that looks at events that occurred in the past to produce an accurate interpretation and description. The study of the morphology of the Arab Village area aims to reveal the changes that have occurred in the area over the past century. Through a morphological analysis approach, this study will examine various aspects including road networks, building typologies, and allergic use. Keywords: Kampung Arab; Kampung Glam; Morphology; Singapore
