Abstract

This paper focuses on the Javanese Muslims religious belief and its ritual, slametan, ‎which is prevalently performed in Java. This ritual is of great significance to the ‎Javanese Muslim community, and is counted as syncretistic ritual of Islamic and the ‎Javanese traditions. The ritual is though analysed in relation to the society ideal of unity ‎and harmony as the standard set for the indicator that the life of people is in order and ‎in a slamet condition or ‘nothing happens’. This paper argues that this ceremony is the ‎main ritual among Javanese Muslims which to a large extent reflects and symbolises the ‎religious belief, slamet principle of the people living together, and having strong ‎awareness of others. This ideal in the end conceives some element of sacredness which ‎has the influence on the relationship between individual and social behaviour.‎

Abstract

There is a problem of determining the beginning of the lunar month among Muslims. They split into different group of opinions and maintain their distinct interpretations as ijtihad against the others. This problem started from the different interpretations of the hadith. Some of them understand it textually that produces ru’yah faction, and some prefer a contextual understanding then belong to the hisab faction. Furthermore, it study underlines the need to understand about how the previous ‘ulama (salaf) argued, especially the ‘ulama of four madhhabs, whose their argument often used as a reference by the ‘ulama of today (khalaf). In this discussion it found that the opinions of the ‘ulama of four madhhab are different. Some used ru’yah and some other used hisab. This is natural as it is the product of ijtihad that each mujtahid has various interpretations. Thus, Muslims have two options: between the scientific determination (Shari’ah/Astronomy) or corporative determination (Unification Calendar). These two options are very difficult to compromise, and one of them must be selected.

Abstract

This article is an elaboration of the creation of Sirat Nan Tersirat dance which is the result of a revitalization of the cultural phenomenon of Paninggahan people who still believe in mystical matters that is known to contradict the Islamic creed, namely to ask the gods or jin by glorifying a place in Nagari Paninggahan. The purpose of this work is to express a work of dance depicting human characters entering the unseen world and to create a work of dance that reflects the human character who wants to meet his Lord (Allah SWT). The creation of this dance is inspired by the story in the origin of the Adok dance in Nagari Paninggahan when a king (Rajo Bagombak Bagalang Leg, the descendant of Pagaruyuang's king) is possessed when hearing the voice of the singing of the gods. The writing uses two approaches, namely the scienceof dance and Islamic approaches. The choreographer gives reinterpretation, i.e. not a god or jinn that enters the human realm but the man who enters the realm of the jinn. In the process of creating, it tries to reinterpret the Adok dance in accordance with the teachings of Islam and the main theme is the road to God (Sirat).
