Abstract

Police institution is one of the institutions adopting a strong patriarchal culture. Indonesian National Police (Polri) is doing many jobs to accommodate public demand in relation to the women participation in Polri and to create an institution that issues gender-friendly policies. Many efforts have been done by Polri such as increasing the recruitment quota for policewoman (Polwan) and issuing a policy permitting Polwan to wear hijab. However, there is an interesting policy that relates to Polwan, namely Make-up allowance provided only for Polwan. The provision of Make-up allowance shows that the Polwan is forced to look pretty by wearing make-up. It raises a question on how the role of Polwan in Polri institution is. Even though the recruitment number of Polwan in Polri has been increased but in reality, Polwan is still places in domestic sphere. This is indeed not according to the objective of Polri as a genderfriendlyinstitution especially for women. This is a qualitative research by using the concept of beauty of myth and objectification and comodification concept in analyzing the problem.

Abstract

Analysis of the gender strategy in the three largest political parties which dominate the legislative period 2009-2014, namely the Democratic Party, the Golkar Party and the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) shows several findings that can be reflected to travel to face election. First, third parties accounted for the most number of women seats in the national parliament. Second, as the dominant parties through the fractions in the legislature, three showed no provisions regarding how the policies and strategies of political parties in efforts to achieve gender equality and gender mainstreaming strategies not found in political parties. Third, strategies that are present in the party institutions only tangible Department of Women as women focal point. Beyond that, the strategy of increasing the representation of women is based on justice, equality, and gender equity was absent.

Abstract

As world develops toward a digital and informational society, feminism finds its place in challenging situation. Numbers of women involved in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) are progressively increasing in 21st century. However, the questionremains whether this rising number has significant impact for feminist movement in science, knowledge, and technology. The development of science and technology, foreseeably enough, is quite inimical to feminism1. Using epistemological feminist approach, this paper aims to analyze the contemporary problem of feminism in technology, how its discourse needs to be more developed and critically assessed. I find that feminism needs to broaden its critics not only in term of social-political practice of women in technology, but also it needs to establish its own bodily knowledge in seeking for so-called feminist technology.

Abstract

Risks of women’s SRHR is increasing due to limited access to water and food in climate change policy. Women’s vulnerability is very high regarding the masculinity of climate-related policy—specifically the minimum representation and participation of women in decision-making. This problematical situation has mounted women’s burden with the changing pattern of climate since women are having difficulties in managing their livelihood. This study found that mainstreaming gender is not being implemented in climate-change related policy in Banyumas and Jepara. In many cases, women are being marginalized and the aims of development does not touch the SDG Post-2015.

Abstract

How does not the government that represents the state show a strong commitment and responsibility to ending sexual violence? Why does the state choose to engage more in giving “temporary response” to the cases of sexual violence? If the state appears to play a systematic role in ending sexual violence, why does not the agenda really address patriarchal structure as the root of sexual violence? This article discusses how the state’s politics of sexuality in Indonesia that was mainly propagated during the New Order administration plays a pivotal role in the irresponsible way the state and the society deal with sexual violence.

Abstract

This research is about temporary marriage in the areas of Cisarua and Jakarta. The Islamic discourse in the Arabic culture views temporary marriage as positive to avoid promiscuity (zina). This research indicates that the practice of temporary marriage is manipulation of religion and degradation of Indonesian women. The dominance of Arabic culture in Cisarua influenced the subjectivity and sexuality of women in Indonesia. Respect for the identity of Indonesian women have faded because Indonesian cultural values are not upheld, overpowered by Arabic-patriachal culture and the fact that poverty is still an issue. Temporary marriage is basically prostitution legalized under the pretext of religion. Temporary marriage and siri marriage cannot be distinguished because both exploits the female body.

Abstract

The Fatwa ”Haram” of MUI against homosexual orientation (LGBT) and the death penalty against LGBT had shaken the Indonesian, and further marginalized ”third” gender people. ”Religion” is urged to provide justice to the Ummah but the Ulema did the opposite thing by discriminating sexual minorities. The legal instrument of regional, national and international human rights has recognizes LGBT rights as basic human rights. Islamic religion in this case Shari’ah and Islamic law is used as a theological foundation by MUI to issued the fatwa that is contrary to the concept of human rights. The progressive interpretation of Khaled M. Abou El-Fadl became important to be studied to protect LGBT. Khaled attempted to break up the tension between religion (Islam) and human rights by using the social approach of contemporary humanities. By this means, Abou El-Fadl introduced a scheme of protection to LGBT under Quranic Syariah Law.
