Abstract

Hypertension is a public health problem increasingly found among young adults, including college students. This study aims to analyze the relationship between ABO blood type, knowledge level, behavior, and hypertension status in young adults on campus. This study used an analytical survey method with a cross-sectional design. The study population consisted of all active students in the Medical Laboratory Technology Study Program at the Poltekkes Kemenkes Banjarmasin, with a sample size of 99 respondents selected using a total sampling technique. The researchers collected data through online questionnaires and blood pressure measurements. Data analysis used the Chi-Square test with a significance level of p<0.05. The results showed that the majority of respondents were female (80.8%), had normal blood pressure (67.7%), had good knowledge (69.7%), and had good behavior (58.6%). Statistical test results showed that gender (p=0.533), ABO blood type (p=0.916), and behavior (p=0.231) were not significantly associated with hypertension status. Conversely, knowledge level was significantly associated with hypertension status (p=0.044). This study concluded that knowledge level was associated with hypertension status, while ABO blood type and behavior showed no significant association. These findings highlight the importance of improving health literacy as part of hypertension prevention efforts in young adults.

Abstract

Despite the importance of blood donation in ensuring a constant supply of blood for emergency situations and surgical procedures, frequent blood donation leads to iron depletion and anemia, posing significant health risks to donors. The study aimed to evaluate the iron status and hematological parameters among blood donors in Benin City. A cross-sectional study involving 100 blood donors was conducted across blood donation facilities in Benin City. Hematological parameters and ferritin levels were analyzed using an automated hematology analyzer (BK3100, China) and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), respectively. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 26.0. Chi-square, one-way ANOVA, and Pearson correlation tests were applied, with significance set at p < 0.05. Results of the participants, 64.0% were males and 36.0% females. The self-reported prevalence of anemia was 1.0%, while all participants had hemoglobin values below WHO reference cutoffs (p<0.05). Male donors showed significantly higher hemoglobin (12.37±0.23 vs 11.05±0.17 g/dL), packed cell volume (37.43±0.60 vs 33.20±0.48%), and ferritin levels (180.23±12.79 vs 117.48±17.43 ng/mL) compared to females (p < 0.05). Conversely, white blood cell and platelet counts were significantly higher in females (p < 0.05). No significant differences were observed across age groups and donation frequencies. Blood donation frequency showed weak negative, non-significant correlations with hemoglobin, packed cell volume, and ferritin levels (p > 0.05). Conclusion Despite the prevalence found in this study, these findings underscore the need to monitor hematological parameters and ferritin levels in blood donors, particularly among women, to ensure donor health and maintain a safe and adequate blood supply.

Abstract

The global prevalence and impact of malaria on pregnancy highlight a significant public health challenge that demands enhanced preventive measures and targeted interventions. The study aimed to assess the hematological, iron, and G6PD status among pregnant women infected with Plasmodium falciparum. We performed a comparative cross-sectional study among two hundred (200) pregnant women infected with Plasmodium falciparum, who attended Edo Specialist Hospital, Benin City, to assess the hematological, iron, and G6PD status compared with fifty (50) Plasmodium falciparum-free pregnant women as controls. Hematological parameters, iron, TIBC (total iron binding capacity), and G6PD activity were assessed using a hematology auto analyzer and spectrophotometric methods, respectively. Data obtained were analyzed using SPSS (IBM v26).  Independent t-test and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used for continuous variables, and chi-square was used for categorical variables. Pregnant women infected with Plasmodium falciparum had 8.70%, 9.42%, 14.44%, 8.1%, 20.17%, 16.72%, 11.31%, and 27.8% reduction in red blood cell, hemoglobin, iron, packed cell volume, G6PD, total iron binding capacity, monocyte, and lymphocyte levels, respectively, compared to Plasmodium falciparum-free pregnant women as controls (p<0.05). In addition, the levels of white blood cell, platelets, and neutrophils witness 15.58%, 10.85%, and 24.02% increase in pregnant women infected with Plasmodium falciparum compared with plasmodium falciparum free pregnant women as controls (p<0.05). No significant differences were observed in serum iron and G6PD levels across gestational ages (p>0.05). The findings underscore the need of regular monitoring of hematological and biochemical parameters in pregnant women infected with Plasmodium falciparum in order to enhance policy on malaria prevention and screening in endemic regions.

Abstract

Ribonucleic acid (RNA) is a crucial molecule in gene expression analysis, yet its isolation from solid tissues, such as endometriotic lesions, poses significant challenges due to complex tissue structure and high RNase activity. TRIzol is a widely utilized reagent for RNA extraction, known for its efficacy in lysing cells and stabilizing RNA. This study aimed to compare the quality of RNA extracts from endometriotic lesion tissue samples using TRIzol-based and non-TRIzol-based methods. A quasi-experimental design was employed, involving a control group and an experimental group, with non-randomized sample allocation. A total of 28 samples were analyzed in both the control and treatment groups. The results demonstrated that TRIzol treatment significantly increased the median RNA concentration from endometriotic lesion tissues, yielding 288.6 ng/μL compared to 118.2 ng/μL in the non-TRIzol group (p=0.001). Furthermore, there was a significant difference between TRIzol and non-TRIzol groups in RNA purity based on the Å260/280 ratio (median: 2.00; p-value:0.024). However, there wasn’t a significant difference in the Å260/230 ratio (median: 2.11; p-value: 0.247). In conclusion, these findings indicate that while TRIzol extraction provides higher RNA yield, the non‑TRIzol method ensures slightly superior sample purity, supporting its reliability for downstream transcriptomic analyses.
