Abstract

This research aims to reflect on racial discrimination contained in the dialogue of Richard La Gravense's film Freedom Writers (2007). This film tells the story of a white teacher named Erin Gruwell who tries to resolve the racist conflict that occurred among her students at Woodrow Wilson High School in Long Beach, California. The film depicts how "liberating" education can be a beacon amid raging gang clashes that drag many children into a cycle of violence. Based on a true story, Freedom Writers, which debuted for the first time on the big screen in 2007, gives a strong impression of how fundamental the role of education is. This research approach is qualitative description. Data were analyzed based on Fred L. Pincus' theory of types of discrimination and Erving Goffman's theory of stigma. The results of this research conclude that in the dialogue of the film, the characters experience two types of acts of racial discrimination, namely individual discrimination and institutional discrimination. Apart from that, this treatment has an impact on prejudice, resulting in violence between racial groups.

Abstract

The Effects of RAFT Strategy on Students' Writing Skills on Writing Descriptive Text of 7th Grade Students at SMPN 3 Cikarang Barat. This study aims to find out the effect of using the RAFT Strategy on students' descriptive text writing skills in the second semester of 7th Grade Students at SMPN 3 Cikarang Barat. This research uses descriptive quantitative method. The research method used is descriptive quantitative method. Data collection techniques using interviews, observation, tests and documentation. Aspects that are assessed in writing descriptive texts are the results of learning to write descriptive texts, evaluations, and summaries. The results of the research on students' descriptive text writing skills using the RAFT strategy in grade VII students of SMPN 3 Cikarang Barat obtained an average score of 51.51 with a sufficient category. This means that students as a whole are able to write descriptive text using the RAFT strategy. As evidenced by the number of 184 students, 36 of them scored above the KKM (Minimum Completeness Criteria) and 16 students scored below the KKM. Keywords: RAFT Strategy, Writing Skills, Descriptive Text

Abstract

Short stories often encapsulate a focused narrative, usually revolving around a singular event or conflict, and delve into the interactions among characters in a compact yet powerful context. Their brevity allows them to be read in one sitting, which is advantageous for readers with limited time. The intent behind this research is to deeply examine the intrinsic elements that constitute the heart of the story. Intrinsic elements are those foundational aspects that form a literary work, granting it its identity as a piece of literature. In the context of short stories, these elements play a crucial role in shaping the narrative and influencing its overall significance. This study will primarily focus on the plot and character development. An insightful analysis of the plot and characters is vital as they are fundamental components that govern the narrative and its emotional resonance. The plot often revolves around the conflicts—whether internal or external—that the characters encounter. By dissecting how conflicts arise, develop, and resolve, readers can uncover the underlying themes that the author aims to communicate.

Abstract

Human being has different emotions within themselves, like sadness, happiness, upset and including guilt which can come from various causes. Uncontrolled guilt can be one of the causes of someone experienced madness, which then has a bad impact on themselves and other parties because this emotion of madness can lead someone to act beyond the reason. Guilt and madness can be found in the behavior of someone who is experiencing a bad psychological condition on the daily life. Guilt and madness can also be found in the literary works and one of them is from Edgar Allan Poe with a short story entitled The Tell-Tale Heart. This is a classic of the Gothic fiction genre that uses point of view from an unnamed narrator who experienced the guild and madness that lead the narrator to killed someone. Therefore, this research is intended to examine the feelings of guilt and madness that presented in the short story The Tell-Tale Heart by Edgar Allan Poe. This research uses qualitative methods and uses Sigmund Freud's 1923 psychoanalytic theory. This research conduct to reveals the relationship between guilt, madness, and the narrator's id in The Tell-Tale Heart short-story. Researchers found that “Ego” was more dominant from guilt and madness. This finding offers a new perspective on how guilt and madness are presented in Edgar Allan Poe's short story The Tell-Tale Heart seen from psychoanalytic theory which has the potential to provide input for future field research and practice.

Abstract

The aim of this research is analysed intimate style that used by the characters in The Incredibles movie and the social factors that influencing the characters to use intimate style would be analysis also. The researcher did this research use descriptive qualitative method and also using observation method to collect the data. The researcher used theory from Martin Joos and Holmes. The result of this research presented descriptively. This research found 15 intimate language style in the movie those are addressee with 3 data, extraction with 4 data, jargon with 2 data, close friend relationship with 2 data, and family relationship with 5 data and also found the social factors that influencing the characters to use intimate style such as participant, topic, setting and function.   The participants of this movie have very close relationship such as family relationship because the topic of the movie is about family superheroes. The conversation in the movie also mostly occurs in informal situation. The utterances that produce by the characters have various function. But mostly, the characters produce the utterances to show their intimacy and closeness each other.

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to analyze the types of lexical cohesion found in an English speech presented by Shereen Salama on English Speeches YouTube channel.  The 13-minute-long video contained motivational words for Muslim youth without any political purposes. The video then was transcribed and analyzed using a descriptive qualitative method in the form of content analysis. The gathered data eventually were classified based on Haliday dan Hasan' theory. The result findings showed that there were 26 synonyms, 1 superordinate, 1 collocation, and 57 repetition data. The most frequent lexical cohesion type was repetition words which appeared as many as 57 times. Key words: lexical cohesion, speech, types
