Abstract

The issue of feminism has been a topic of discussion for many years, transforming several fields, including literature. As feminist issues have emerged, many literary works have begun to portray feminist characteristics. One of them is Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's A Scandal in Bohemia, which has the feminist character of Irene Adler. Irene Adler is an interesting central character in this classic Sherlock Holmes story. Sherlock Holmes. Known for her intelligence and independence, Adler is feminist in the detective narrative. Irene Adler's character challenges existing ideas about women in literature at the time. The author used a qualitative method with a feminist literary criticism approach based on the theory of modern feminism, which states that everyone has the right to determine their own path of life, regardless of the influence of their environment. After analyzing the story of A Scandal in Bohemia, the author found seven characters of Irene Adler that represent feminist characters, such as strong-willed, assertive, independent, freedom of expression, self-confidence, strategic intelligence, and the ability to challenge and change stereotypes and male views of women. The implication of this research is that readers can gain a better understanding of how feminist characters contribute to the development of plots and themes in certain literary works or media.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of Zepeto Game learning media on speaking skills in the second grade of MA Annida Al-Islamy Jakarta Barat. This study employed a quasi-experimental design with two classes as the sample. Furthermore, the research design of this study includes a pre-test, treatment, and post-test, with the XI MIPA 1 class acting as the experimental class and the XI MIPA 2 class acting as the control class. The researcher used 60 second-grade students as respondents to accomplish the goal of this study. They were then split into two groups: experimental and control. During the treatment process, the experimental group received Zepeto Game as learning media, while the control group received traditional instruction. According to the t-test calculation, to = 6,06 is greater than tt = 2,39, in the degree of significance 1% = 2,39, and in the degree of significance 5% = 1,67.

Abstract

Adapting a novel into a movie combines creative art and technical challenges. The film director is required to make the novel story that is lifted to the big screen have uniqueness from creative ideas with limited film duration, various creative interpretations, and commercial interests. The process will result in two-story forms: maintaining the novel's authenticity or changing specific components. Therefore, this research compares Nancy Springer's Enola Holmes novel, published in 2006, and Harry Bradbeer's film adaptation, released in 2020. This comparison is carried out to find the fidelity or infidelity of using the detective story formula in the Enola Holmes film related to the director's creativity and the technical challenges in the adaptation process. Using the descriptive qualitative method and Cawelti's detective story formula theory, the result of data analysis shows that Enola Holmes' novel is classified into the classic detective story formula. At the same time, the movie adaptation is categorized into the hard-boiled detective story formula. This theory is applied through the differences between the focus of the story, the setting, and the role of women. These differences lead to infidelity in using detective formulas that aim to develop and clarify the storyline and make some things more realistic when the novel's story is adapted into a movie that refers to commercial interests and audience satisfaction.

Abstract

This research to find measure between students who are taught using the total physical response method and students who are taught using the discovery learning method in mastering students' vocabulary at the seventh grade of SMPN 6 Cilegon in 2022/2023 academic year. The research methodology is used quantitative method specifically quasi-experimental research design. The instrument used in this research is test. This research involved 33 students in experimental class and 33 students in control class as a sample among the seventh grade of SMPN 6 Cilegon. The research findingresult showed that there is a significant difference between students using total physical response and discovery learning method. Based on the results of the Wilcoxon-test, in experiment group has sig 0.000 < 0.05 and in control group has sig 0.034 < 0.05. It can be concluded that the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected and alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. The result of this research that the total physical response was effective than discovery learning method in mastering students’ vocabulary at junior high school, espcially at the seventh grade of SMPN 6 Cilegon.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of digital poster presentations to enhance students' speaking skills. in this study, there are three researcher questions, namely: (1) How was the speaking skill of the eighth grade students of SMP Islam Ar-Rochmah Cilegon before using a digital poster presentation? (2) How is the Implementation of Using Digital Poster Presentation to Enhance Students' Speaking Skill? (3) How is the effectiveness of Digital Poster Presentation to enhance students' speaking skill on descriptive text?. This study used a quasi-experimental study that involved two classes, namely VIII A which acted as a control class, and VIII B which acts as an experimental class consisting of 33 students in each class so the total number of students is 66 students of class VIII as respondents. The final finding of this study revealed that t0 is greater than the t table at a significant level of 5%, namely t table = 0.886 and t observation = 4.32. In addition, the results of observations show that students are more motivated in learning English, especially in speaking subjects. Based on the above results, it can be concluded that digital poster presentation can improve students' speaking ability compared to those who do not use it

Abstract

This study endeavors to explore whether there exists a significant discrepancy in students' speaking proficiency between those instructed with the ELSA Speak application and those without it, among twelfth-grade students at SMAN 6 Kota Serang. Employing a quantitative research approach with a quasi-experimental method, the researcher examined 60 twelfth-grade students from SMAN 6 Kota Serang, comprising 30 students from XII MIPA-6 as the experimental group and another 30 students from XII MIPA-3 as the control group. Data collection methods encompassed observation, pre-tests, treatment, and post-tests. Analysis via t-test yielded revealing results: the mean speaking proficiency score for the experimental group was 76.93, while for the control group it stood at 64.26. Furthermore, the calculated t-value was 8.46, surpassing the critical t-value of 1.67 at a significance level of 5%. This disparity between the obtained t-value and the critical t-value led to the acceptance of the alternative hypothesis (Ha) and the rejection of the null hypothesis (Ho). In essence, the findings suggest a significant disparity in speaking proficiency between the group using the ELSA Speak application and the group without it. Consequently, these results underscore the importance of integrating technology-based language learning tools such as ELSA Speak into educational curricula, as they have demonstrated efficacy in enhancing students' speaking skills and fostering more effective language acquisition.   Key words: ELSA Speak, Speaking Skill, Mobile Assisted Language Learning.

Abstract

Learning media in the digital era must be aligned with technological developments. The learning media chosen must be interesting and attached to students. The Tik Tok application is currently popular with many people, including the students of administrasi bisnis department, Universitas Bina Sarana Informatika. Departing from these reasons, the researchers took the initiative to implement the Tik Tok application as a medium interesting and fun learning in delivering material in English for Business courses. This study aims to find out how effective the Tik Tok application is in improving the speaking skills of students majoring in business administration at the Universitas Bina Sarana Informatika. Qualitative method is used for analyzing the recorded video on Tik Tok application that were produced by the students as well as processing of questionnaires on student views regarding the use of tick tock media in learning in English for Business courses. The result indicated that the use of the Tik Tok application is considered quite effective in developing students' speaking skills. This can be seen from the results of the recordings sent to lecturers, students are more relaxed and not tense when speaking English using Tik Tok. This was also corroborated by the results of filling out the questionnaire which stated that the Tik Tok application was an innovation in learning English, which made students more relaxed and enjoyed the teaching and learning process and eliminated the mindset that learning English is difficult.

Abstract

This research is based on the use of "ngalem" or praising oral speech in daily communication. “Ngalem” is an expression to show admiration for other people. Nowadays, the use of this term is rarely use in Javanese society. This research aims to describe and explain the types of metaphors found in Javanese speech when someone "ngalem" or praises another person. Next, provide data using the listen and note method. There are several findings, first, "ngalem" or praise is usually intended to praise the beauty of male and female body parts including the head, body, hands, and feet. Second, the type of metaphor that dominates is anthropomorphic metaphor. "ngalem" tends to match parts of the human body with inanimate objects. Third, the animal metaphor type is used to describe a beautiful neck as if it were coiled like a snake, while the synthetic metaphor is used to "smile" at the beauty of the lips. Some informants still remember this expression but tend not to understand its meaning. Some informants also no longer introduce these expressions to their children or grandchildren. Implicitly, this research also illustrates the phenomenon of the Javanese community's declining interest in maintaining and passing on the language to the generations below.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze the Hallucinations issue in the Graphic Novel Caroline. The condition when someone who experiences sees, hears, feels, smells and tastes things that are not real is Hallucinations. Many things can cause hallucinations. One of them is a very strong desire to get something. The graphic novel Coraline has abundant evidence of the hallucinations experienced by the main character. Freud (1953) felt that hallucinations were very much like dreams and that both conditions represented a psychotic state in which there is no sense of time at all. Coraline always enters a parallel world when she sleeps and sees her parents in different forms and traits. The analysis is used psychological approach especially Sigmund Freud's Psychoanalytic theory. The psychological approach can be used to analyze the characters in a work. The main character and her hallucinations are important for analysis. The focus of this study is to find confirmation of Id, Ego, and Super Ego from Coraline's hallucinations. The method used is qualitative in analyzing graphic novels

Abstract

This study purpose is to found: 1) code mixing types used in Cinta Laura video podcast "Bicara Cinta" on YouTube channel and 2) the factors why the speakers used code mixing in video podcast "Bicara Cinta" on YouTube channel. This study applied the theory of Hoffman (1991). Code Mixing is a study of sociolinguistics. Sociolinguistics can be defined as the study of language that related to society. Sociolinguistics is concerned with how language use interacts with or is influenced by social factors such as gender, ethnicity, age, and social class. Sociolinguists are interested in how we change the way we speak in different social contexts and how we use specific features of language to convey aspects of social meaning and identity. The data were taken from a video podcast "Bicara Cinta" from Puella Id YouTube channel owned by Cinta Laura. This study used a descriptive qualitative method, in Observations method, watching the video podcast, listening the conversation the video podcast, and note taking technique was applied in order to collecting data. The study result is showing the prominent type of code-mixing found in this study is Intra-sentential code-mixing, while the least type of code-mixing found in this study is Intra-lexical code-mixing. For occurrence from this data that found are 50 data, Type of code mixing Intra-sentential code mixing are 35 (70%), Intra-lexical code mixing is 6 (12%), and Involving a change of pronunciation are 9 (18%). To get data results from involving a change of pronunciation, people need to understand the correct pronunciation, for example of course can be mispronounced to be a "of cos" in this study.
