Abstract

Seborrheic dermatitis is a chronic skin disorder associated with colonization by Malassezia furfur and is commonly treated with topical antifungal agents and corticosteroids, which may cause adverse effects when used long term. Therefore, safer and more sustainable alternative therapies derived from natural products are needed. One such candidate is bajakah root (Uncaria acida), which is known to contain flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins, terpenoids, and saponins with potential antifungal activity. This study employed a true experimental posttest-only design involving 24 male BALB/c mice induced with Malassezia furfur and divided into a negative control group (distilled water), a positive control group (ketoconazole), and treatment groups receiving Uncaria acida extract at concentrations of 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%. The research stages included extr act preparation using ethanol maceration, ointment formulation, fungal infection induction, and clinical evaluation. Phytochemical analysis confirmed a total flavonoid content of 28.5 mg QE/g. The results demonstrated significant differences across all clinical parameters (p < 0.05), with the 75% extract concentration providing the most optimal clinical improvement. These findings indicate that Uncaria acida extract has strong potential for development as a topical herbal therapeutic candidate and provides a foundation for further studies focusing on formulation optimization and clinical trials.

Abstract

Land-use change in tropical landscapes poses increasing threats to plant diversity, yet baseline floristic data from transitional forest–agroecosystem areas in South Sumatra remain limited. This study aimed to document plant species diversity, floristic composition, and conservation status across four habitat types in the Rebonjaro forest landscape: secondary forest, shrubland, mixed rubber plantation, and oil palm plantation. Vegetation surveys were conducted in 2024 using purposive belt line transects adapted from rapid vegetation assessment methods. Species were recorded through direct field observation within ±10 m of transect lines, with transect lengths ranging from 100–300 m. Conservation status was assessed using the IUCN Red List (version 2024-2) and Indonesia’s Ministry of Environment and Forestry Regulation No. 106/2018. A total of 175 plant species representing 61 families were recorded, with Euphorbiaceae, Fabaceae, and Moraceae being the most species-rich families. Most species were categorized as Least Concern, while Aquilaria malaccensis was identified as Critically Endangered and Gluta renghas and Syzygium laxiflorum as Near Threatened. The results indicate that modified landscapes, particularly mixed rubber plantations, retain considerable plant diversity. This checklist provides essential baseline data to support long-term biodiversity monitoring and conservation planning in landscapes undergoing rapid land-use change.

Abstract

Temulawak (Curcuma xanthorrhiza Roxb.) is a traditional Indonesian medicinal plant rich in Curcumin and active compounds such as triterpenoids, alkaloids, saponins, and flavonoids, which exhibit antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Curcumin content was quantified at 109.58 mg/g using the UV-Vis spectrophotometry method, and its antioxidant activity was confirmed through increasing DPPH inhibition percentages with increasing extract concentrations, with the IC₅₀indicating significant radical scavenging potential. Excessive 45% ethanol intake can induce oxidative stress and alter white blood cell counts. This study used 20 male white rats (Rattus norvegicus L.) weighing 180–200 g, divided into normal control, alcohol control, and ginger extract treatment groups at doses of 100, 200, and 300 mg/kg body weight. Hematological parameters observed included erythrocytes, hemoglobin, hematocrit, MCV, MCH, MCHC, platelets, and total and differential leukocyte counts. Results showed that ginger extract, particularly at 200 mg/kg, stabilized blood profiles after alcohol consumption, with hematological values approaching normal levels. Differences between groups were not statistically significant, indicating the safety and antioxidant potential of ginger extract.

Abstract

The increasing prevalence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria encourages the exploration of natural antibacterial agents with lower risk of promoting resistance. Honey is a promising candidate due to its acidity, high osmolarity, and bioactive compounds. However, comparative studies on the antibacterial activity of Indonesian honey from different bee species remain limited. This study compared the antibacterial activity of ten Indonesian honey samples produced by four bee species (Apis mellifera, Apis dorsata, Apis cerana, and Tetragonula laeviceps). The target bacteria used were Escherichia coli ATCC8739, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC6538, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC15442. Antibacterial activity was evaluated using the disc diffusion assay, followed by bacterial viability, LD50 determination and proximate analysis of the most active samples. All honey samples inhibited Escherichia coli, whereas only TG1_PND from T. laeviceps inhibited all three pathogens. Viability assay indicated the strongest inhibition at 100% honey concentration, with the lowest LD50 (81%) against Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Proximate analysis showed that TG1-PND possessed the lowest pH, suggesting that its antibacterial activity may be related to organic acid-induced osmotic stress. These findings demonstrate the potential antibacterial activity of T. laeviceps honey and its development as a natural antibacterial agent.

Abstract

Ischaemic stroke is one of the leading causes of disability and mortality worldwide and results not only in physical impairment but also in substantial psychological consequences, particularly depression. This study aimed to analyse changes in depression severity as a neuropsychological manifestation in patients with ischaemic stroke before and after one month of treatment, using the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS). A quasi-experimental, one-group pre-test-post-test design without a control group was employed. Depression was assessed at two time points: at the patient's initial visit to the Neurology Outpatient Clinic of Haji General Hospital Medan (pre-test) and one month after treatment (post-test). A total of 50 patients with ischaemic stroke who met the inclusion criteria were enrolled. Data were analysed descriptively to characterise the patients and the distribution of depression severity, and comparative analysis was performed to assess differences in scores before and after treatment. Depression severity decreased significantly after one month of treatment (p < 0.05). These findings indicate that the treatment provided contributed to improvements in the psychological condition of patients with ischaemic stroke.

Abstract

Peperomia pellucida is a wild plant traditionally known to be rich in secondary bioactive compounds and has great potential as a natural antidiabetic agent. This study aimed to test the effect of Peperomia pellucida extract on blood glucose levels and leukocyte counts in male white rats (Rattus norvegicus). An experimental study using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) consisted of 6 treatment groups with 4 replications over 28 days. Rats were conditioned to hyperglycemia using alloxan and then treated with distilled water (P0), 0.5% Na-CMC (P1), 5 mg glibenclamide (P2), and Peperomia pellucida extract at doses of 400 mg/kg BW (P3), 500 mg/kg BW (P4), and 600 mg/kg BW (P5). Data were analyzed using Welch's ANOVA followed by the Games-Howell post hoc test. The results showed that rats treated with Peperomia pellucida extract at all doses (400, 500, and 600 mg/kg BW) exhibited a significant reduction in blood glucose levels with similar effectiveness among doses (p < 0.05). In contrast, no significant differences in leukocyte count were observed among treatment groups (p > 0.05). It can be concluded that treatment with Peperomia pellucida extract at a dose of 400 mg/kg BW for 28 days exhibited antihyperglycemic activity without affecting leukocyte parameters during the treatment period.

Abstract

Oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) is a strategic plantation commodity in Indonesia, but its productivity is often affected by diseases, particularly pathogenic fungal infections that reduce the photosynthetic area of leaves. This study aimed to identify and characterize the morphology of pathogenic fungi causing oil palm leaf diseases at Sei Merah Plantation, PT PP London Sumatra Tbk. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed using purposive sampling of 20 symptomatic leaves from 10 oil palm trees aged 5–8 years. Fungal isolation was conducted on Potato Dextrose Agar (PDA), followed by macroscopic and microscopic identification using lactophenol cotton blue staining. Infected leaves showed brown to blackish necrotic spots, chlorosis, and severe blight resulting in leaf tissue desiccation. Eleven isolates were identified into three genera, with Fusarium sp. and Curvularia sp. showing the highest equal proportions (36.36% each), followed by Rhizoctonia solani (27.27%). Colony growth rates ranged from 8.3–12.7 mm/day, with Curvularia sp. growing fastest (12.4 mm/day). The Shannon–Wiener index (H′ = 1.09), evenness (E = 0.99), and Simpson dominance index (C = 0.34) indicated a relatively balanced pathogen community without absolute dominance. These findings highlight the need for integrated disease management based on accurate morphological identification.

Abstract

Well water quality in communities surrounding final disposal sites is susceptible to deterioration because of leachate contamination, increasing the risk of diarrheal disease. The objective was to analyze the association between well water quality and diarrhea incidence among communities living around the Pakusari Final Disposal Site, Jember, Indonesia. A quantitative observational study with a cross-sectional design was conducted involving 20 households using well water and six representative well water samples collected through the grab sampling method. Data were obtained through structured interviews, field observations, and laboratory analyses of physical, chemical, and microbiological water parameters. Escherichia coli contamination was determined using the Most Probable Number (MPN) method. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the Chi-square test, and logistic regression. Results showed that all well water samples (100%) were contaminated with Escherichia coli and failed to comply with microbiological drinking water standards under the Regulation of the Minister of Health of the Republic of Indonesia Number 2 of 2023. Diarrhea occurred in 55.0% of respondents. Physical and chemical parameters were not significantly associated with diarrhea incidence (p > 0.05), whereas boiling drinking water was significantly associated (p = 0.038). Poor microbiological water quality and household water treatment practices contributed to diarrhea incidence.

Abstract

The high recreational potential of Danau Biru in Panca Jaya Village a former mining site poses a risk of health hazards to visitors due to chemical contamination of the water. This study aims to evaluate the physical and chemical quality of Danau Biru’s water as a basis for recommendations on sustainable safety management of the tourist destination. This mixed-methods study employed purposive sampling in two zones (shore and center) with three replicates. Parameters were analyzed using descriptive and comparative methods in accordance with Ministry of Health Regulation No. 2 of 2023. Laboratory test results indicated extremely hyperacidic conditions with pH values ranging from 2.39–2.52 (shore) and 2.29–3.88 (center), far below the quality standard (6.0–9.0). Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) values ranged from 3.68–4.96 mg/L (periphery) and 3.20–4.80 mg/L (center), exceeding the maximum limit of 3 mg/L. Meanwhile, Dissolved Oxygen (DO) was recorded at 4.1–4.6 mg/L, still meeting the minimum criterion (≥ 4 mg/L). It is concluded that the water in Danau Biru does not yet meet recreational water quality standards; therefore, swimming is strongly discouraged to prevent the risk of skin irritation and chronic toxicity to visitors.

Abstract

Lake Bukit Sempaja Indah is a post-mining water body utilized by the surrounding community for various activities, making water quality monitoring necessary to assess its condition against applicable quality standards. This study aimed to evaluate the water quality of Lake Bukit Sempaja Indah based on Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), and Dissolved Oxygen (DO). A descriptive quantitative approach was employed using purposive sampling at one sampling point representing an area with intensive community activities. Water samples were collected in January 2026 and analyzed in the laboratory according to Indonesian National Standards (SNI). The results showed that BOD, COD, and DO values were 1.84 mg/L, 11.10 mg/L, and 4.44 mg/L, respectively. All parameters met the Class II water quality standards stipulated in Government Regulation of the Republic of Indonesia No. 22 of 2021. The BOD and COD values indicated a relatively low organic pollution load, while the DO concentration indicated sufficient dissolved oxygen to support aquatic organisms. Based on measurements at the sampling point and during the sampling period, the water quality of Lake Bukit Sempaja Indah met Class II water quality standards based on BOD, COD, and DO parameters. Further monitoring at multiple locations and sampling periods, along with additional water quality parameters, is recommended to provide a more comprehensive assessment of the lake's condition.
