Abstract

Augmentation of the alveolar ridge is widely performed in implant treatment to create predictable function andesthetics in area with inadequate bone volume. There are some different ways to augment the alveolar ridge.Distraction osteogenesis is a new method in increasing the width of the ridge and preparing a sufficient bed for implantor prosthesis. Distraction osteogenesis result in formation of new bone between bone segments that are separatedgradually by incremental traction. Alveolar widening by distraction osteogenesis is an alternative method forreconstructing alveolar atrophy that is similar to alveolar split grafting but without grafting, which offers manyadvantages over traditional techniques. This paper is aimed to discuss considerations and technique of alveolar ridgeaugmentation for preparing adequate bone volume before applying implant by using distraction osteogenesistechnique.

Abstract

Chronic atrophic candidiasis is the pathologic changes on the oral mucous of thedenture wearers, accompanied with erythematous under the denture, usuallyasymptomatic and relates to the yeast of Candida. The irritation factors of chronicatrophic candidiasis are ill fitting denture, using the denture at night and bad oralhygiene. This is a case report of chronic atrophic candidiasis on patient usingremovable denture without systemic disease. The trigger factors were using denture atnight, mistaken of cleaning the denture and dental calculus surround the artificialteeth of denture. Final diagnosis is based on anamnesis, clinical examination andmicrobiology examination. Therapy given was a topical antifungal appliedcontinuously for 7 days after the clinical signs dissapear. The patient was suggested tonot using the denture at night, maintain the cleanliness of the denture regularly andscaling the teeth. It can be concluded that management of chronic atrophiccandidiasis is based on the oral lesion condition, oral hygiene, wearing denture atnight, and the systemic condition.

Abstract

The prosthetic treatment of seriously damaged teeth after treated with endodontic often require an endodontic post asan additional retention element for core build-up prior to crown restoration. In addition to metal-based posts andzirconia-based ceramic posts, fiber reinforced composite (FRC) post system has become to be widely used in therestoration of endodontically treated teeth. A FRC post offers a number of advantages over a metal post due to itsmodulus of elasticity being closer to that of dentin and superior esthetic quality. Teeth restored with FRC posts showbetter resistance to fracture propagation than teeth restored with prefabricated or cast metal posts. Endodonticallytreated teeth reinforced with a prefabricated fiber post have shown lower incidences of root fracture.

Abstract

This case reported a female patient aged 30 years was treated with orthognathysurgery in Hasan Sadikin Hospital, Bandung. Based on clinical and radiologicalexaminations, model study and photography, diagnosis of skeletal dysgnathy class IIwas established. The orthodontic treatment is a preparation before surgical operationto achieve stability in optimal dental interdigitation. In operation, BSSO, chinplasty, and V-Y plastic upper lip as well as intermaxillary fixation (IMF) ligation was carriedout at the dentofacial position class I. At day-16, radiography was carried out toevaluate the surgical outcome and the bone position. At day-21, the opening of jawswas 1.5 cm; and at day-42, the patient was reconsulted to orthodontist, and tophysical medicine and rehabilitation In month-3, occlusion, facial profile andharmony, and jaw functions showed the satisfying outcome, though for theinterdigitation stabilization, the rubber elastics was still installed.

Abstract

Periodontitis is characterized with macrophages infiltration that is used to fagocyt bacteria which infiltrated atgingiva. Mangosteen rind contains xantone, an anti-inflammatory substance which inhibits the synthesis of PGE2 andtherefore reduce inflammatory cells infiltration. This research aimed to study machropahges cells infiltration inperiodontitis-induced wistar rats after administration of mangosteen rind etanolic extract. Forty eight male wistar ratswere induced periodontitis for 7 days. After the ligation was taken out, the rats were divided into 4 groups, and treatedorally with mangosteen rind extract 60 mg/kg BB, 30 mg/kg BB, ibuprofen and saline. The rats were sacrified on the 1st, 3rd, 4th, and 7th day after the treatment. Their anterior lower jaws were processed histologically and stained withhematoxylin eosin. Two-way anova test showed a significant difference among groups (p<0.05). It was concluded thatmangosteen rind etanolic extract reduced the number of macropaghes cells gingiva in periodontitis male wistar rats.

Abstract

Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS)is an ulcerative condition that affects the oral mucosa without evidence ofunderlying disorder. It’s characterized by the appearance of recurring round, shallow ulcerations surrounded byinflammation that mainly involves the nonkeratinized mucosa. The classification of SAR are minor, major, andherpetiform types. Although rare, secondary infection may occur. Treatment is directed to avoid local traumaticprecipitants, lessen the pain and duration of ulceration by suppressing the local immune response, and preventsecondary infection. The objective of this paper is to discuss the treatment of RAS with secondary infection, a caseof 24-year-old man with multiple large ulcers that did not heal for almost 4 weeks. The ulcers were diagnosed asmajor RAS with secondary infection, and treated with metronidazole and ciprofloxacin, healed in 2 weeks withscars. Although secondary infection will delay healing, but with proper treatment, major RAS has good prognosis.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate effectiveness difference between convex triangular and rectangular cross section rotary  instruments on root canal Enterococcus faecalis bacteria colonies. Samples mandibular premolar teeth with one narrow and straight root canal divided into 3 groups : instrumented with convex triangular cross section rotary instruments, rectangular cross section rotary instruments, and convex triangular cross section manual  instruments. Each group consisted of 9 samples. Standardized teeth length, instrumented to #15 K-file  and sterilized. E. faecalis suspension in BHIB was standardized then 27 root canals contaminated. Root canals were incubated for 21 days. Every 48 hours root canals added with BHIB. Initial samples were collected, plated in agar culture medium and incubated for bacterial count. and then bacterial count was performed again. Data were collected and analysed using Paired T-test and ANOVAThe results showed there are significant  difference on Enterococcus faecalis bacteria colonies amount before and after preparation with all instruments that was used and bacterial reduction amount in root canals were greater on convex triangular cross section instruments than on rectangular cross section instruments even there was no significant difference.

Abstract

Elderly people are particularly vulnerable to oral disease. Decreased function of the body can affect the aging process of the organic, and anorganic content in the elderly. The aim of this study was to determine the content of organic elements (total protein level), volume and pH of saliva in the elderly. This descriptive observational study with crosssectional design was performed in Tresna Werdha Gau Mabaji Social Institution, Gowa (n=30)with a simple random sampling technique using 30% of the total population and in Werdha Theodora Makassar nursing home with saturated sampling technique (n = 13). Anorganic contents were measured using spectophotometric and organic content of the total protein level of saliva was measured using an autoanalyzer tool kyltec in BPTP Laboratory Maros. Statistical analysis was performed with t-test using SPSS version 16. There were no significant differences between the anorganic (Ca2+,Mg2+, and phosphate) and organic elements content of saliva (total protein level), the volume of saliva and salivary pH in the elderly by sex and age groups. Yet, there are significant differences in the volume of saliva of elderly who consume drugs for systemic diseases. It is concluded that gender and age do not affect the anorganic (Ca,and phosphate)and organic element content of saliva (total protein content), the volume of saliva, and saliva pH in the elderly. Drugs consumed for systemic diseases does not affect the anorganic and organic element content of saliva and the pH of saliva in the elderly.
