Abstract

In the realm of education, the significance of teaching and learning is paramount, with teachers assuming a pivotal role in shaping successful educational outcomes. Learning, viewed as an ongoing lifelong process, is characterized by purposeful endeavors to cultivate individual potential and foster responsible citizenship. Civic education, marked by an emphasis on comprehensive comprehension and skill development, encounters persistent challenges such as the limitations of conventional lecture-based methods that impede effective learning. In response, this study developed a specialized learning module concentrating on two-variable linear equations, employing the ADDIE model. Employing a quantitative experimental research approach, data collection involved comprehensive methods including questionnaires, observations, interviews, and meticulous statistical analysis. The validation process underscored the module's pronounced practicality and engagement, further affirming its viability for implementation. The study's findings, presented earlier, deduced that the integration of the discovery learning model aided by the "bilik" cultural diversity image media significantly influences the learning outcomes of fourth-grade students studying civic education at SD Muhammadiyah 2 Waru. Notably, pretest results averaged at 68.25, while posttest scores displayed an average of 94.7. The t-test calculations confirmed a disparity in the averages, with pretest and posttest increments of 71.17 and 96.7, respectively. These outcomes substantiate the model's efficacy in elevating posttest scores beyond pretest levels, emphasizing its impact on learning outcomes. Consequently, this research offers valuable insights into advancing the effectiveness of civic education through innovative pedagogical strategies.

Abstract

The paper engages with the phenomenon of large classes in higher education institutions in South Africa and its challenges to the quality of teaching learning. Most public higher education institutions in South Africa, in response to historical conditions, have enrolled students more than their capacity, resulting in massification and negative consequences on educational quality. There has been a plethora of literature on the teaching of large classes, however, few studies offer a comprehensive engagement on the challenges presented by teaching larges and its impact on quality of education as well as innovative strategies that can be used to teach and different learning pedagogies that can be used. This essay identified the challenges of teaching large class in higher education institutions due to massification and large enrolments and their implications on sustaining and enhancing quality of teaching and learning. In addition, I suggested several strategies that can be used to overcome the challenges of teaching large classes as well as how to monitor and evaluate these strategies with the aim of improving quality of higher education in the era of massification. Accordingly, the human capital theory was adopted. Furthermore, a qualitative research approach was applied in this study and a systematic literature review was used to collect and review information according to the guiding principles of the hermeneutic framework. The essay contributes to literature with the strategies to enhance quality of teaching and learning, student engagements and teaching approaches aimed at reaching all students in large classes.

Abstract

Primary school is the initial stage of formal education that provides students with fundamental knowledge and skills. Therefore, primary school education should emphasize meaningful learning experiences to help students develop their potential and abilities. One of the subjects taught at the primary school level is Natural Sciences (IPA - Ilmu Pengetahuan Alam). The teaching of Natural Sciences requires scientific methods and attitudes to ensure that students can develop a deep understanding of scientific concepts and apply them in their daily lives. The main focus of this article is on scientific methods and attitudes. Based on this research, the method used by the researcher is literature review. The research results show that the strategy for developing investigative skills and critical thinking in scientific methods and attitudes, using the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model, is effective. This is because the learning model uses real-world problems as a context for students to learn problem-solving skills and critical thinking to acquire essential knowledge and concepts.

Abstract

IPAS (Natural and Social Sciences) Learning in the Merdeka Belajar Curriculum is an essential component of educational development in Indonesia. In IPAS learning, students are equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to comprehend complex natural and social phenomena and make informed decisions based on available evidence and data analysis. As social beings who interact daily with the natural and social environment, this subject is crucial for acquiring the required knowledge and skills. Achieving this goal necessitates proper planning, implementation, and evaluation. In this article, a qualitative descriptive literature review method is employed, involving the collection of information and data using various library materials such as documents, books, magazines, historical narratives, and others. This approach leads to the conclusion that the planning of IPAS learning encompasses analyzing Learning Outcomes (LO) to formulate learning objectives and the sequence of learning objectives, planning and conducting diagnostic assessments, developing teaching modules, teaching with LO stages and student characteristics, planning, implementing, and processing formative and summative assessments, reporting learning progress, and evaluating learning and assessment. Regarding the implementation, it involves several stages including introduction, orientation activities, pre-perception activities, motivation activities, core activities, and closure activities. However, the implementation of learning activities is inseparable from the core learning experiences as outlined in Permendikbud Regulation Number 81 A of 2013, Attachment IV, which specifies five core learning experiences: observing, questioning, gathering information/experimenting, associating/processing information, and communicating. As for the evaluation phase, it consists of several stages that are adapted to the curriculum, using assessments such as rubrics, checklists, progress graphs, projects, written tests, oral tests, assignments, portfolios, and other relevant assessments related to the materials taught by educators.

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to locate and discuss the policies that governs South African universities in relation to the global trends and their impacts thereof. The higher education system in South Africa is shaped and understood according to many different narratives, the story of higher education globally, and the fundamental changes it has undergone, its own particular history and legacy told from many perspectives, and the deliberate steering of the system through the application of policy drivers to reach particular goals. Intricately intertwined with the society in which it is embedded, the higher education sector in South Africa today is as much a creature of its past as it is a creature of sustained effort, through policy, legislation and institutional restructuring, to redirect and transform it. In higher education, there is an increasing resultant standardisation of the curriculum in response to the market forces. Politics in the age of globalisation should not be seen as a practice of noble hopelessness because there a rapid expansion of a global higher education market, based on the discourse of global competition. The paper argues that that while the South African higher education system has experienced considerable growth, this growth has not been met with sufficient funding to enable the national goals of higher education to be fully met, and the prospects of a sustainable increase in funding are negligible. The higher education system in South Africa is undoubtedly under pressure, due to a number of institutions struggling to keep the higher education project alive. The paper concludes that, in order to become internationally competitive, national policies in developing countries tends to use key projects to drive reform processes, and establish priorities, and is focusing investment on a few universities. Institutional managements and staff have to deliver on sometimes competing objectives.

Abstract

This study aims to explain the modelling-based Islamic Religious Education (PAI) learning strategy applied at Sabilus Sholihin Socah Bangkalan Junior High School to foster student independence. The research method used is qualitative with a phenomenological approach. The results showed that the modeling-based Islamic Religious Education learning strategy in this school is based on values such as exemplary independence, creativity, and self-confidence. Through this approach, students are given relevant examples related to independence, creativity, and responsibility. The results of this study provide important insights into the importance of modeling-based learning strategies in the context of Islamic religious education in Indonesia, as well as identifying factors that support or hinder the implementation of these strategies in schools. Supporting factors in this learning strategy include school facilities and infrastructure, such as the musholla and hall, which provide support for the formation of students' independence in activities. Students are also given the opportunity to develop their independence in terms of knowledge and skills. However, the inhibiting factor lies in the lack of awareness of students and parents toward education, primarily due to economic pressure. In addition, television shows, smartphones, and social media are also inhibiting factors in the effort to foster students' independence.
