Abstract

One of the ways to increase the country's foreign exchange earnings is encouraging tourism. As one of the countries that is rich in culinary taste of the archipelago, Indonesia has the potential to develop cultural gastronomy as one of the determining factors for tourists to choose tourist destinations. This study aims to determine the symbolic meaning of gastronomy in the culture of ethnic Chinese in Indonesia. The theory used in this study is the symbolic interactionism theory and cultural gastronomy. This study employs a case study method by selecting the  Kota Tua (Old Town) area as the research site. Data were collected by means of observation and interviews with informants related to the purpose of the research. The conclusion shows that the Chinese gastronomic culture in Indonesia is the assimilation and acculturation of Chinese and Indonesian gastronomic culture. Thus, it presents   culinary tastes that are different from the original, namely  Ethno Gastronomy of Ethnic Chinese in Indonesia.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the phenomenon of cyberbullying in adolescents. Cyberbullying has the potential to harm victims such as loss of self-confidence, depression and decreased performance. Therefore, this study aims to determine the behavior patterns of cyberbullying perpetrators and victims of adolescents in Jakarta. Cyberbullying behavior patterns in this study refers to the concept of Willard which classifies seven behaviors: flaming, online harassment, denigration, impersonation, outing and trickery, exclusion, and cyberstalking. This research has been conducted with descriptive research, by taking high school students in DKI Jakarta as sample. A total of 400 students have been chosen by using multistage random sampling. Data was collected through a questionnaire and measured using the Student Assessment Survey (SAS). The results showed the involvement of students as perpetrators and victims of cyberbullying. Behavior that tends to be used by students as cyberbullying is denigration (77.2%), harassment (74%), and flaming (70%). While students who are victims of cyberbullying, the treatment that tends to be experienced is denigration (79.2%), flaming (78.7%) and harassment (75.2). The results of this study suggest the need for strategies to prevent cyberbullying behavior by literacy using social media effectively.

Abstract

Some studies have discussed digital activism and politics in Indonesia. However, studies investigating the phenomenon of Indonesian feminist activism on social media have  yet to be conducted. On the other hand, Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, and also other online platforms have become a fertile site for the public to aspire their views and mobilize people for some causes, including  social media accounts voicing feminist perspectives in Indonesian online sphere. This study uncovers the actors behind and goals of feminism activists who create accounts on social media such as Facebook, Instagram and YouTube. The method of the study is snow-ball interviews, content analyses of Instagram posts, and close observation on public activities of the important figures within the movement on their social media account, as well as their writings. This study found that Indonesian digital feminism activists have started with the agencies of the young women of Indonesia in the circle of senior feminists in Jakarta, as well as feminist emerging from the GusDurian network. Basic literacy and digital literacy have facilitated the activists with capability to articulate and share their ideas. Eventually, the activists initiate the movement on social media which  functions as a means of creating digital safe place, sharing personal stories, providing online discussion forum, promoting marches and offline discussion events, responding to criticisms and oppositional standpoints, as well as conducting and publishing research.

Abstract

This study aims to carry out a disaster communication audit of Kabar Petang (Evening News) Program on the TVOne in the May-June 2019 period. This study uses the SMCR theory and the concept of disaster communication, the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) of Disaster Communication, and the Guide to Broadcasting Behavior and Standards of Broadcasting Programs issued by the Indonesian Broadcasting Commission (KPI). This study uses a descriptive qualitative method with data collection techniques including content analysis, observation, a document study, and validity test through an interview with KPI as a source. The results of this study constitute the findings of disaster communication audit of disaster broadcast on TVOne, part of which has followed the Guide to Broadcasting Behavior and the Standards of Broadcasting Program issued by the KPI, SMCR theory, and has used disaster communication dimensions, and SOP for Disaster Communication. There are some findings that are not yet suitable, namely: (1) the repetition of a video clip showing the sufferings of victims; (2) the absence of competent resource persons in the field of disaster; and (3) the broadcast of affected people’s panic. This research provides recommendations to broadcasting institution TVOne, the government, and media workers to convey educational broadcast messages based on competent sources in the field of disaster so that the community is ready to survive the natural disaster.

Abstract

Today many political parties use new media, the internet, as their political communication channel.  For young people, the internet serves as a dominant public space. Since young voters as millennial generation have great potential to increase votes, many political parties convey their political messages through new media used by millennial generation. This research is intended to see and study the influence of political messages in new media on political awareness and its impact on political participants of millennial generation. This research uses Stimulus Organism Response (S-O-R) theory as main theory, McQuail’s mass communication theory, and theory or concept of political awareness, political participation and new media as well as millennial generation. This research uses quantitative approaches with a survey and questionnaire method as a means of collecting data. The millennial generation referred to in this research is younger generation aged between 17 and 37 years and lives in the Special Capital Province of Jakarta (DKI Jakarta). Based on the recapitulation of final voter lists for the 2018 general election, the number of voters aged between 17 and 37 years reaches about 2,885,000. The technique of determining the sample size uses Slovin’s formula, with the margin of error reaching 5% so that the number of samples is 400. Meanwhile, the technique of sampling uses proportional sampling and data analysis technique uses path analysis. The results of the research show that political messages in new media have direct and indirect influences on the political participation of millennial generation.

Abstract

This article discusses how media convergence, as a new era of media in welcoming the industrial revolution, is not working properly. The purpose of this study is to explain how the media today still often create content with profit priority. By using Vincent Mosco's political economy theory and case studies on local media with national networks, the author tries to unravel how the media performs its functions. As a result, even though the media has developed more advanced with the era of digital media, the media is still often used for political interests or other interests through the titles or news content they make. To anticipate this, the general public should equip themselves with the capabilities of media literacy and digital literacy, so that they  cannot choose a media that is suitable for consumption in the era of industrial revolution 4.0 where the media has developed into digital domain.

Abstract

Aladdin's film, tells not only about romance but also family problem communication, specially differences of opinion and perspective of parents in choosing their child's life partner. Not only is the problem found in the movie but also in everyday life. Parental demands for a child's life partner have an impact: loss of freedom to choose the desired life partner. As a result, there arise disappointment, conflicts, and feelings of depression to unwillingness to get married. This condition is exacerbated by the influence of family’s cultural background or certain restrictions. Using the Stuart Hall reception analysis model, this study involves four parents who have watched Aladdin's film with different backgrounds, cultures and experiences, and have teenagers entering adulthood. The results showed that the era of media and information openness has had an impact on changing parents' communication patterns to be more open, dynamic and aware of children's desires. Three parents are in a negotiating position with no emphasis on cultural background but religious similarity, and one parent is in a dominated position, freeing the child to determine a life partner without any criteria. Each parent captures the message of Aladdin's film by linking it to family experiences and personal knowledge.

Abstract

The healthcare reality is composed of  biomedical,  naturalistic, and  personalistic systems. Although the three healthcare systems go separately, to some extent they are overlapped. This study aims to explore alternative healing practices in Indonesia based on the personalistic system. The method used is a case study. Data was collected in several big cities (Bandung, Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Surabaya, Palembang, Batam and Makassar) in Indonesia through Focus Group Discussion (FGD) with stakeholders of healthcare programs on media, interviews with physicians, alternative therapists and patients, observation of alternative therapies, and media content analysis. The results indicate that the healthcare practices based on the personalistic system is widespread throughout Indonesia, including religious treatment (often called ruqyah) involving religious chants and prayers. With some using herbal medicine, a lot of alternative therapies based on the personalistic system have been promoted through word of mouth (interpersonal communication) by common people as patients as well as through the electronic media (especially television), and print media (especially newspapers) in many areas in the country.

Abstract

This article focuses on sharing information and knowledge in the form of scholars’ academic communication about the COVID-19 epidemic in international publications. The data was collected from search results in the Scopus database from December 2019 to March 2020. Through the bibliometric assessment method, the survey shows that there are 1475 publications on COVID-19. There are 1104 publications (75%) that can be accessed. Although COVID-19 has started about four months since the first case in Hubei China (11/17/20), scholars are making a research program and publish their findings in order to share information and knowledge in dealing with the pandemic. The sharing information is theoretically a form of world scholarly academic communication activities. Therefore, open access publications can help scholars to easily communicate and share information about their findings. This then affects the number of publications and citations with the capacity of research institutions, sponsors, and countries. This article recommends as broad as possible to provide open access in the midst of disaster situations in order to handle COVID-19 pandemic faster and easier.

Abstract

The Japanese occupation of East Asia during World War II was accompanied by its propaganda targeting the local population. In Indonesia, the military government, among other things, published Djawa Baroe, a fortnightly magazine published from January 1, 1943, to August 1, 1945. Compared to other magazines, this bilingual magazine (in Japanese and Bahasa Indonesia) Djawa Baroe was unique: it featured ample photographs and illustrations. Qualitative content analysis method enables this study to find the meaning of a theme in its holistic political, social, and cultural contexts beyond the number of its occurrences in the text offered by quantitative content analysis. All the issues of Djawa Baroe are examined in detail and reiteratively. Six themes can be found in Djawa Baroe, i.e., the friendship between Japanese and Indonesians, the description of Japanese military prowess, the exaltation of nationalism, and the preparation for the war, the evil nature of Western power, the role of women in society, and entertainment. The study concludes that along with the development of the Pacific War that turned against the Japanese, Djawa Baroe moved its emphasis on long-range goals at the high psychological level to influence and win the hearts and minds of Indonesian people, to a more immediate result and practical guide in facing the imminent war. On the other hand, against the original intention of the Japanese propaganda, Djawa Baroe may have helped its educated readers to imagine their future nation-state, Indonesia.
