Abstract

In the contemporary digital era, many Generation Z Muslims identify as “spiritual but not religious,” affirming faith while distancing themselves from rigid institutional authority. Meanwhile, Islamic da’wah communication often remains hierarchical and one-directional, creating a gap between institutional messaging and digitally embedded youth. This study reconstructs da’wah communication strategies to re-engage Generation Z by aligning communicative practices with their digitally shaped spirituality, authority evaluation, and participatory expectations. Using a qualitative design, data were collected from 27 Muslim university students in urban Indonesia through semi-structured interviews, digital observation, and documentation of online da’wah content over three months. The data were analyzed using thematic coding through iterative reduction, categorization, and verification. Findings show that participants maintained commitment to Islamic values but expressed spirituality in individualized, selective, and digitally mediated ways. Religious authority was evaluated primarily through authenticity, transparency, and responsiveness rather than institutional status. Dialogical, short-form, and visually engaging content was most effective in sustaining trust and attention. These results indicate that da’wah communication must shift toward participatory, authenticity-centered, and digitally adaptive models. This reconstruction offers a theoretical and practical framework for engaging Generation Z meaningfully in contemporary digital religious environments today.

Abstract

Cyberbullying among adolescents is often examined through technological and psychological perspectives, while the role of family communication as a cultural space shaping aggressive behavior has received less attention. Verbal violence within the family as a communication practice is assumed to contribute to an increased risk of adolescent involvement in cyberbullying. This study used a descriptive survey method with a questionnaire instrument. Data were collected from 1,481 high school students in four cities in Indonesia: Mataram, Pontianak, Medan, and Makassar. The questionnaire investigated exposure to violence within the family, verbal violence practices in the form of negative labeling and harassment between family members. Data were analyzed descriptively to identify dominant patterns of verbal violence culture in family communication. The results showed that most adolescents were exposed to violence, especially arguments within the family. In addition, they experienced verbal violence through negative labeling based on physical characteristics, habits, and traits. These findings indicate that a culture of verbal violence in the family has the potential to be the root of adolescent aggressive behavior in the digital space. This study recommends the importance of a cultural and family approach in developing strategies and literacy models for preventing cyberbullying.
