Abstract

Many researches view the internet as a  virtual public sphere or forum potential that provides a space for minority groups to voice their opinions.  This article identifies the role of social media in creating political public sphere for voters with disabilities in Indonesia during Presidential Election in 2019. By applying the normative values provided by Public Sphere Theory and Sphere Public Subaltern Theory, this article determines various potentials as well as stumbling blocks of the internet as a virtual public sphere for internet users.  Virtual ethnography method is used to determine the identity of virtual communities of disabled people on three most active social media platforms in Indonesia, namely Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. Virtual Ethnography enables researchers to conduct an online observation on virtual communities three months prior to  the 2019 Presidential Election. The data findings help the researchers draw conclusion  that social media has technically advocated the endeavor of the disabled people’s political rights equality, proven by the existence of disabled people’s virtual communities and the narratives of struggle for their political rights equality. However, the data has shown an inadequacy of disabled people’s virtual community to create dynamic inter-activities between its members  as this community has not been able to reflect a public sphere that is able to build public opinion  which  effectively influences public policy.

This study uses the SMCR theory and the concept of disaster communication, the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) of Disaster Communication, and the Guide to Broadcasting Behavior and Standards of Broadcasting Programs issued by the Indonesian Broadcasting Commission (KPI). This study uses a descriptive qualitative method with data collection techniques including content analysis, observation, a document study, and validity test through an interview with KPI as a source. The results of this study constitute the findings of disaster communication audit of disaster broadcast on TVOne, part of which has followed the Guide to Broadcasting Behavior and the Standards of Broadcasting Program issued by the KPI, SMCR theory, and has used disaster communication dimensions, and SOP for Disaster Communication. There are some findings that are not yet suitable, namely: (1) the repetition of a video clip showing the sufferings of victims; (2) the absence of competent resource persons in the field of disaster; and (3) the broadcast of affected people’s panic. This research provides recommendations to broadcasting institution TVOne, the government, and media workers to convey educational broadcast messages based on competent sources in the field of disaster so that the community is ready to survive the natural disaster.

Abstract

It has been argued that the media ownership is an influential factor determining the content production and performance of the media. However, knowledge about the characteristics of the media ownership and its impacts on the coverage of general election by the media has been less researched. Judging by such developments, this work raises the following question: how did the oligarchic ownership of the Indonesian news television channels determine the ways in which they covered two candidates who ran for president in 2014? By selecting TV One and Metro TV as a case study, this work extracts reports on the ways in which these news TV channels have produced news content related to the 2014 general election using qualitative and thematic content analyses. The findings are as follows: In the 2014 Indonesian presidential election, both TV One and Metro TV failed to comply with the ideal journalistic principles of covering both sides, objective and balanced reporting, as required by the Indonesian Broadcasting Commission, while broadcasting news about the two presidential candidates. Instead, the television stations preferred to broadcast the polarized news coverage of the presidential candidates. TV One appeared to show more support for the Prabowo-Hatta Rajasa presidential candidate pair, while Metro TV favoured the Joko Widodo-Jusuf Kalla presidential candidate pair. This suggests that oligarchic media ownership strongly influenced the content production and performance of these news TV channels. They were used by oligarchs who have the media company to convey their personal political agendas in the hope that it will influence, or even set, the public’s agenda.

This research uses quantitative approaches with a survey and questionnaire method as a means of collecting data. The millennial generation referred to in this research is younger generation aged between 17 and 37 years and lives in the Special Capital Province of Jakarta (DKI Jakarta). Based on the recapitulation of final voter lists for the 2018 general election, the number of voters aged between 17 and 37 years reaches about 2,885,000. The technique of determining the sample size uses Slovin’s formula, with the margin of error reaching 5% so that the number of samples is 400. Meanwhile, the technique of sampling uses proportional sampling and data analysis technique uses path analysis. The results of the research show that political messages in new media have direct and indirect influences on the political participation of millennial generation.

Information about the spread of the coronavirus is circulated through various information channels in the society, both mainstream media, alternative media, social media, and daily conversation. One of the information channels that is widely used and referenced by the public is social media. Dissemination of information about the expanse of the coronavirus on social media is arranged by various individuals. This study will explain the disemination of information relating to covid-19 in terms of the social class of the reader. In this study, we use critical discourse analysis as a method for analyzing data. This study finding is that the information circulation about coronavirus in social media is class bias. General information is conducted through formal language by middle-class groups. On the other hand, many people present alternative information in the form of memes, jokes, and funny content that contains information about spreading the coronavirus. This phenomenon can be categorized as a lower social class attempt to understanding and spreading information about the coronavirus (Cinelli, et al., 2020)outbreak. The media used to disseminate this information contains text, images/photos, or videos that contain memes, organizes, and funny content. This phenomenon can be seen as a lower-class struggle to educate its class in situations and conditions caused by the coronavirus.

Abstract

This article focuses on sharing information and knowledge in the form of scholars’ academic communication about the COVID-19 epidemic in international publications. The data was collected from search results in the Scopus database from December 2019 to March 2020. Through the bibliometric assessment method, the survey shows that there are 1475 publications on COVID-19. There are 1104 publications (75%) that can be accessed. Although COVID-19 has started about four months since the first case in Hubei China (11/17/20), scholars are making a research program and publish their findings in order to share information and knowledge in dealing with the pandemic. The sharing information is theoretically a form of world scholarly academic communication activities. Therefore, open access publications can help scholars to easily communicate and share information about their findings. This then affects the number of publications and citations with the capacity of research institutions, sponsors, and countries. This article recommends as broad as possible to provide open access in the midst of disaster situations in order to handle COVID-19 pandemic faster and easier.

Abstract

The use of health communication in the group of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) mosques and the group of Muhammadiyah mosques in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic in Banjarmasin City is inseparable from the background of the two religious organizations. In responding to the government’s call for mosques not to hold Friday prayers to contain the transmission of Covid-19, the group of Muhammadiyah mosques made persuasive, cautious and rational approaches to convey the message of the call to the congregation. On the other hand, the message of the call conveyed by the group of NU mosques to the congregation is coercive and tends to cause fatal or radical attitude. This study recommends that the group of NU mosques be united to manage an organization functioning as a basis, umbrella, and command. This way more effective and controllable communication among NU mosques can be created to resolve internal differences while conveying communication messages. The conclusion and recommendation are based on the results of the research conducted through qualitative approaches using data collection techniques covering observation and unstructured interviews to obtain indepth and pure data. Qualitative data analysis was conducted before, during and after a field research.
