Abstract

Management of conflict and negotiation played an important role in solving a dispute. Both actions were not simple tasks in resolving conflicts since different points of view usually involve. This was what happened in the dispute of animal welfare issue between Bandung Zoo and Scorpion Wildlife Foundation. The dispute that became the focus of this article related to the accusation raised by the Scorpion Wildlife Foundation towards the Bandung Zoo in terms of animal welfare abandonment. The conflict between the two organizations has increased because the zoo did not accept the allegations and intended to bring the foundation to a legal court for the reason of defamation. This article looked at the use of the management of conflict and the negotiation to resolve this conflict by the Agency of Natural Resources of West Java as facilitator. The study used constructive case study method to chronologically construct the conflict and the use of negotiation. The results showed that the facilitator dominated the negotiation process, while the conflicting parties have not had any agreement to resolve the problem. The condition had a potential to be invalid any time if the dispute was not completely resolved.

Abstract

The digitization of communications technology has led to an intense interaction between human and digital-based technology. A large number of digital data traces produced by humans as a result of that activity. Such data is commonly referred to Big Data. The availability of Big Data as a digital data source in turn, opens opportunities for communication scientists to be able to use that data to get the patterns and trends of human activities that have been done through social research. It is necessary to understand the basic concept of the Big Data, using appropriate tools and adequate access to the data, and appropriate research method in order to be able to conduct research by using such digital data. This paper aims to describe the potential of Big Data for the purposes of communication research, the use of appropriate tools, techniques and methods and to identify potential research directions in the digital realm. Some limitations and critical issues related to the research validity, population and sample, as well as ethics in digital media research method were also discussed.

Abstract

The use of social media is not only important but also strategic means of political communication in the Regional Leader Election (Pilkada) of DKI Jakarta and is interesting to be examined, particularly from the view of Erving Goffman’s Self Presentation—Impression Management Theory. This research aims at illustrating the impression management strategy of the Governor-Vice Governor candidates for DKI Jakarta, namely Ahok-Djarot and Anies-Sandi, through social media. We apply qualitative analyses to the Instagram feeds and Twitter timelines of the two duos from October 2016 to April 2017. The result shows that the candidates attempt to present themselves by projecting the images they want. Ahok-Djarot applies three strategies: 1) credibility strategy, presenting competency, achievements, performance during their time in the office of DKI Jakarta as well as their characters—enthusiastic, firm, and focus to positive matters; (2) politeness strategy, by illustrating themselves as two concerned, friendly, and humorist persons; (3) influencing strategy, to spread influence; (4) self-deprecating strategy to draw sympathy from the citizens about the problems faced by Ahok. On the other hand, Anies-Sandi utilize these three strategies: 1) affinity seeking and politeness strategy to make them acknowledged and liked by the netizens; 2) image confirming strategy to make the netizens have the image of who Anies-Sandi are; and (3) credibility strategy by showcasing their achievements prior to being the Governor-Vice Governor of DKI Jakarta candidates.

Abstract

This research studies the digital media consumption pattern of journalists. This consumption pattern is done by journalists to support their job. The work pattern of journalists in finding news fundamentally depends on the credibility of the sources. The process of choosing sources and finding ideas and information is usually done conventionally, thus presently done through social media. This study was conducted by surveying 60 journalists in Jakarta. The method used for data analysis was descriptive statistics. Results showed that the majority of respondents had a high social media usage pattern; thus, it can be said that social media carries a great influence toward the work pattern of journalists. This can be seen from the majority of respondents who admitted that they had written about growing issues in social media as news in conventional media; they even admitted to interviewing some sources because they monitored their opinions and comments on social media. The type of journalists who became respondents in Jabodetabek were creators, conversationalists and Joiners; the rest participated by consuming social medias and collecting informations. Journalists in this position acted only as consumers.

Abstract

False information or “hoax” related to political, economic, religious, cultural, even health issues has become a cause for concern for many people. It is feared that the massive proliferation of hoax-related issues in our public sphere, both in the media and daily interaction, will lead to conflicts if it’s not handled properly. This fear has prompted some movements to fight hoax in Indonesia. The fight against hoax is conducted by many sides, both from government and non-government, in many forms. The Ministry of Communication and Informatics, the Police of the Republic of Indonesia, and the Indonesian Anti-Hoax Citizens have launched a number of anti-hoax movements by publishing information considered hoax. Besides, there are also some other movements to fight hoaxes, such as HoaxAnalyzer by students of the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) and Apps application by the Islamic organization Muhammadiyah.  On the global scale, the movement against hoax has been led by Google through Google News Lab and First Draft. The movement to fight hoax is conducted by combining technology and human’s cognition to verify the information. Discussion in this research will explore some anti-hoax movements in society. This study aims to map anti-hoax movements in Indonesia. The mapping is intended not only to explore the form of the movements and the methods they use to fight hoax but also to see how effective the movements are to fight hoax in Indonesia.

Abstract

Indonesians often consume online news presenting figures of survey results, not only political news but other news as well, for instance, a news headline stated that 63 percent of people on average agreed to a cabinet reshuffle. Strangely enough, it was not stated 37 percent of people on average did not agree to a cabinet reshuffle, which has the same meaning. An attractive frame of online news will potentially get clicks from its audience. In theories of framing effect, news framing in general has a cognitive effect on the audience, including the framing of survey results. However, an opposing view suggests that the advent of new media, especially the internet and Web 2.0 technology, has changed the fundamental order of mass communication, which leads to a minimum effect of new media framing and difficulty in measuring them due to the emergence of preference-based effects as a natural attribute of the online media environment. This interesting research tries to examine the effects of framing in the realm of psychology, which is still quite rarely done in studies on framing effects, by using experimental quantitative methods that test individual evaluation heuristics. The framing of survey results turned out to have an effect on the heuristic assessment of the individual reader. The study prove that the framing effects remain even in new media platforms. The findings presented in this article are expected to contribute to the development of framing theories and media effects.

Abstract

In 2018 and 2019, Malaysian and Indonesian eligible voters cast their ballots  for prime minister and president and vice president respectively.  Especially in Indonesia, the eligible voters also  elected members of the Regional Representative Council,   the  House of Representatives,  Provincial Legislative Council and District/Municipal Legislative Council. Prior to the polls, the issue of who would run for presidency and vice presidency had become a hot and interesting topic of conversation among Indonesian citizens, with many of them using social media to express it. However, when the society talked too much about politics on the cyber media, the problem is whether they could come up with constructive rather than destructive content of discussion without destroying democracy.  The methodology of this research is library research in which the author collected a number of library materials containing in-depth study of a subject, and found relevant keywords in the catalogs, indexes, search engines, and various scientific journals. The newer the sources, the more up-to-date references and quotations will be.  To search a database effectively, the author started the search by finding keywords, seeking relevant records, and then narrowing  the keywords to focus on the search. The author later evaluated carefully each source found.

Abstract

Minangkabau customary law is always quite open to integrating with new elements. Despite the influences of Hinduism, Buddhism, and  colonial ruler, it is Islam that has encouraged the lifestyle of the matrilineal community until now. The meeting of the elements has created the term ‘adat bersendi syarak, syarak bersendi kitabullah’, which clearly shows a marriage between old elements and  new ones.  It seems that this process did not stop there since social change continues to occur in line with the influence of globalization. Despite the ongoing  social change, the Minangkabau society still have the strong will to preserve the  core elements of their culture. This research was conducted at Nagari Maninjau and Nagari Sungai Batang. Each population referred to in this research means a family group consisting of a father, a mother, and at least one child aged 10-19 years. This study uses a simple quantitative method, involving  a total of 106 families as respondents. The results of  interview were further analyzed qualitatively. The pioneer of cultural preservation is  urban area. In terms of loyalty to introduce culture to the next generation, the family configuration of Minang father+Minang mother and non-Minang father+Minang mother fulfill the criteria. Data shows that no uncle plays a significant role in inheriting culture since the central role is played by a mamak pusako.

Abstract

Ecological issues pose a serious threat to the continued existence of contemporary society. The recent development of humanity as an information society has been unable to overcome ecological issues; indeed, they have become more complex. Rapid advances in information and communication technology have fundamentally transformed various dimensions of human life. At the same time, ecological problems have been complicated by increasingly intense disasters, limited awareness of environmental degradation, as well as the increasingly apparent threat of global warming and climate change. Niklas Luhmann, a German sociologist, offered ecological communication as a conceptual framework for understanding the ecological problems faced by modern society. Through his system theory and concept of resonance, Luhmann sought to explain how modern society, as a complex social system, responds to ecological issues. This article seeks to explore in detail the ecological communication framework developed by Luhmann and use it to understand the ecological issues facing today#39;s information society, especially in Indonesia. The main method used by this research is exploration and explication of the principles of Luhmann#39;s theory, which are implemented to analyze various ecological issues and natural disasters in Indonesia. This research involved the collection of materials on ecological communication from Luhmann#39;s books, as well as the linking of these materials to the ecological problems faced by information society.
