Abstract

This study was motivated by the low level of learning discipline among students of Class VII B at SMP Negeri 48 Samarinda, as indicated by frequent tardiness, failure to bring learning materials, and leaving the classroom during lessons. The purpose of this research was to determine the effect of group counseling using the behavior contract technique on improving students’ learning discipline. This research employed a pre- eksperimental design with a one-group pretest-posttest format and a quantitative approach. The subjects were selected using purposive sampling, involving a total of five students. The results showed an increase in students' learning discipline scores after the intervention. The average pretest score was 56.20, which increased to 70.00 on the posttest. A paired sample t-test revealed a significance value of 0.000 < 0.05, indicating a significant difference between the pretest and posttest scores. Therefore, the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted, meaning that group counseling with the behavior contract technique had a significant effect on improving students’ learning discipline.

Abstract

The disparity between students’ initial expectations and the realities of college life may cause emotional stress, academic perplexity, and psychological adaptation problems. The complex reality of campus life often does not meet the idealistic image many students have of their academic accomplishments, the learning environment, and social interactions when they arrive at university. This state makes understanding academic resilience vital as the process of students adapting to the challenges of higher education. The purpose of this research is to analyze student resilience in the context of the gap between expectations of study and the reality of the university experience. This study combines a qualitative technique using a narrative inquiry research design. The participants were recruited purposively, consisting of three students from Sungai Penuh, Jambi, who continued their studies beyond their home region and had faced a mismatch between academic expectations and reality on campus. Data were acquired via in-depth semi-structured interviews and analyzed using thematic-reflective analysis. The research results demonstrate that the mismatch of expectations causes a phase of emotional disorientation characterized by disappointment, academic pressure, and a drop in self-confidence. However, individuals gradually built resilience through cognitive reframing, coping techniques, social support, emotional regulation, and reinterpretation of their academic experiences. This paper views academic resilience as a dynamic and ongoing adaptive process, rather than merely the ability to withstand pressure. This research underlines the necessity of psychological counseling services, counseling, and social assistance in higher education for students to acquire better skills in academic adaptation.

Abstract

Marital communication conflict requires prospective counselors to combine core counseling skills with sensitivity to clients’ spiritual values. This study aimed to develop a psychospiritual-based micro-counseling module for students of Islamic Guidance and Counseling in managing marital communication conflict. Using a research and development design with the ADDIE model, participants included three expert validators, three practitioner/lecturer user validators, and 20 students in a limited readability and practice try-out. Data were collected through needs analysis, document review, expert validation, usability assessment, student responses, practice observation, and focus group discussion. Quantitative data were analyzed descriptively, while qualitative data were reduced, categorized, and used for module revision. The final module comprised six units: micro-counseling concepts, dynamics of marital communication conflict, psychospiritual techniques, micro-counseling skills, case-based practicum, and counselor self-evaluation. Expert validation scored 4.30 and usability testing 4.18, indicating high feasibility. The module is suitable for family counseling courses and micro-counseling practicum, though broader effectiveness testing is recommended.

Abstract

Self-harm is a maladaptive emotion-regulation strategy experienced by university students facing intense psychological distress. This study aimed to explore the subjective experiences of Muslim university students who engaged in self-harm and to examine the roles of irrational belief systems and spirituality in their recovery process. Using a qualitative approach with an interpretative phenomenological design, data were collected from six Muslim undergraduate students in Tulungagung, Indonesia, consisting of five females and one male aged 20–22 years, who were in their fourth and eighth semesters. Data we re obtained through semi-structured interviews, observations, and documentation/life history, and were analyzed thematically using REBT-based coding. The findings generated three main themes: (1) self-harm as an emotion-regulation mechanism in the absence of a safe relational space, reinforced by frustration intolerance; (2) interpersonal trauma as the root of awfulizing and self-downing beliefs; and (3) recovery through belief-system reconstruction supported by relational support, meaningful activities, and Islamic spirituality. These findings indicate that self-harm should not be understood merely as deviant behavior, but as an expression of unresolved emotional distress maintained by irrational beliefs. The study highlights the need for culturally sensitive, trauma-informed, and spiritually integrated RREBT-based counseling interventions for Muslim university students experiencing self-harm tendencies.

Abstract

This study explores the subjective experiences of former rehabilitation clients after participating in a Community-Based Intervention (IBM) program. Using a qualitative phenomenological approach with Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), this study involved two former rehabilitation clients who had completed the IBM program for at least six months. Data were collected through in-depth semi-structured interviews. IPA analysis was used to interpret participants’ lived experiences, while NVivo 12 Plus assisted in organizing and coding the data. The findings revealed that participants experienced emotional recovery, increased self-confidence, improved health awareness, and significant changes in life perspectives after rehabilitation. Recovery was interpreted not merely as abstinence from drug use, but as a process of rebuilding self-identity, restoring meaning in life, and developing confidence to maintain positive behavioral changes. However, participants continued to face challenges such as social stigma and pressure from former peer environments. The study concludes that IBM plays an important role in psychosocial recovery through social support, community mentoring, and the strengthening of self-efficacy among former clients.

Abstract

Learning motivation is an important factor in students' academic success, especially for students from broken homes who often experience decreased motivation due to family conflict, lack of attention, and emotional instability. This study aims to examine the group counseling process using the Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) approach in improving the learning motivation of students from broken homes at SMK Negeri 1 Martapura. This study used a descriptive qualitative method involving 10 students as research subjects. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation, and analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model, which includes data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that group counseling with the REBT approach resulted in positive changes in students' cognitive, behavioral, and emotional aspects. Cognitively, students were able to change irrational thought patterns to more rational ones and accept family conditions more healthily. Behaviorally, there was an increase in attendance, participation in learning, and responsibility for assignments. Emotionally, students became more confident, more open, and showed a decrease in withdrawal behavior. These findings indicate that REBT group counseling provides meaningful support in improving students' learning motivation in the school context.

Abstract

The transition period from secondary education to higher education often triggers academic stress among first-year students due to significant changes in learning paradigms. This study aims to explore in depth the dynamics of academic stress, the implementation of self-management strategies, and the role of religious coping as an adaptive mechanism among first-year students at Universitas Sapta Mandiri. The study employed a descriptive qualitative method, with data collected through open-ended questionnaires administered to first-year students. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis techniques through the stages of data reduction, categorization, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The study involved six first-year students. The findings reveal that the primary stressors stem from the burden of scientific paper assignments and the demands of self-directed learning. Students mitigated these pressures through self-management strategies in the form of time regulation and behavioral regulation. The main finding of this study is the integration between technical self-management and religious coping (ritual practices and the concept of tawakkal), which together form psychospiritual resilience. This synergy enables students to transform academic burdens into a meaningful and stable process of personal growth.

Abstract

IAIN Curup has an important role in supporting students' holistic development, including psychological well-being. Academic, social, and environmental adaptation pressures often increase student stress and anxiety. The suicide case at IAIN Curup highlights the need for in-depth understanding and support for student mental health. Peer counseling, where students help others with similar backgrounds, is recognized as effective in improving psychological well-being. This research uses a mix method to explore the use of peer counseling at IAIN Curup, including the challenges and obstacles in its implementation. The results showed that peer counseling improved psychological well-being through moral support and collaboration with academic staff and mental health professionals. However, major challenges such as stigma against mental health and low student awareness hinder the effectiveness of the program. Barriers to trust in peer counselors' advice also arise due to doubts about their competence. This research suggests the development of peer counseling strategies that are relevant to the IAIN Curup context and integration with the wider mental health system. It is hoped that these results can become a reference for other universities in facing similar challenges and improving students' psychological well-being holistically.
