Abstract

This study aimed to explore linguistic competence in academic text translation by professionals, focusing on their awareness, dominant linguistic competence and strategies, and the impact of Machine Translation (MT) and AI-driven software on their workflow. The research utilized the PACTE TC’s model (2003), which includes pragmatic, sociolinguistic, textual, grammatical, and lexical sub-competences. A qualitative research design by Creswell Creswell (2018) with a descriptive method was employed to delve deeply into the subjective experiences of professional translators.  The surveys were conducted via Google Form from March to April 2024. The results indicate that the respondents demonstrated high awareness of linguistic competence, particularly in pragmatic, sociolinguistic, textual, grammatical, and lexical aspects. Respondents identified linguistic challenges such as lexical, textual, and sociolinguistic issues. Strategies to overcome these challenges included using online resources, human checks, and continuous learning. The results also show varied attitudes towards MT and AI, with some translators embracing these tools for efficiency and others preferred manual methods. MT and AI were perceived to enhance translation quality, especially in grammar accuracy and efficiency. However, the study’s limitations highlight the need for future research on the effectiveness of different MT and AI tools, balancing technological assistance with human expertise, and the impact of training programs.

Abstract

This paper, titled "Unveiling Hanna Schmitz: A Sociocultural Analysis of Morality, Guilt, and Memory in Bernhard Schlink's The Reader," explores the enigmatic character of Hanna Schmitz by examining her moral decisions, guilt, and the influence of societal norms. Through an in-depth analysis, it delves into the complexities of identity formation, memory, and the aftermath of historical trauma, offering insights into the human condition. The study reveals the external factors and internal motives behind Hanna Schmitz's involvement in the Holocaust, following a sociocultural analysis of various aspects that entangle the main character in the consequences of her choices, ultimately leading to her suicide. The analysis highlights how literacy and education can become destructive tools when wielded by ignorant and arrogant elites to segregate and manipulate. Hanna suffers from a societal disease that shapes her actions and fate. The paper argues that society and the tyrannical regime play pivotal roles in shaping Hanna's unfortunate destiny. Her struggle with illiteracy and her efforts to conceal it further underscore the societal pressures and personal conflicts she faces.

Abstract

Global communication currently plays a crucial and highly significant role in both first language (L1) and foreign language (L2) learning situations. This occurs for various reasons, including international commerce, politics, higher education, immigration, and tourism. This article critically examines discourse phenomena in global communication, highlighting discourse metonymy, shifters, and textual metaphor as the discourse techniques used in metadiscourse to enhance communication and meaning creation in global contexts.Based on secondary and tertiary data, this study employs qualitative data analysis. Lev Vygotsky's 1962 interactional theory is used to comprehend communication theory. The purpose of this study is to answer the research question: How beneficial and acceptable are discourse phenomena in terms of meaning-making and global communication? The researcher finds that each of these discourse phenomena plays an important role in the meaning-making process, making communication clearer and more effective for L2 learners, whether at the vocabulary, clause, or sentence level in written texts or oral expression. As a result, the researcher recommends these discourse phenomena to students, teachers, linguists, and researchers for effective and appropriate global communication.

Abstract

A person should achieve maximum satisfaction in life and achieve balance between physical, emotional, social and spiritual aspects as the manifestation of self-actualization. This research aims to reveal that an individual who experiences a self-actualization process is able to recognize and develop their talents, abilities and values. The entire research is carried out using a qualitative descriptive method to reveal that self-actualization can be used as a guide to achieving harmony between all elements of the environment. In the data collection  procedures, all the data with a focus on self-actualzation are gathered from the novel, covering a comprehensive data selection to meet the objectives of the study. The selected data are then sorted  out to be conformed with the types of self-actualization as the points of analysis. For the data analysis, deductive frequency method of analysis is applied, going from general to specific analysis. All the types of data needed are classified, coded and  interpreted comprehensively based on the focus of the study. The main data source is obtained from the novel above and subsequently from other related references. By using a humanistic psychology approach with the concept of the process of self-understanding which is then generated with the theory of human needs by Abraham Maslow, with a formulation of the levels of human needs starting from the most basic to gaining self-understanding, it is found that the novel contains the concept of self-actualization in the form of free will, responsibility and self-awareness.

Abstract

This study investigates the phenomenon of translanguaging among the multilingual members of the K-pop group WayV, focusing on their YouTube content, "The Summer Talk." Translanguaging, characterized by the seamless incorporation of multiple languages into a single interaction, is an emerging global cultural phenomenon in the K-pop industry. The main objective of this research is to systematically record and examine the forms and reasons for translanguaging observed among WayV members in their YouTube content. This study employs descriptive qualitative research and content analysis, using a documentary technique to collect and analyze WayV's YouTube videos. This approach allows for an authentic analysis of the group's language use, including linguistic preferences and communicative methods. The findings reveal that translanguaging accounts for 35% of the WayV video content, with 50% of its use dedicated to explaining certain topics. Referential speech is the most common, making up 49% of the videos. Future research should explore how fans perceive translanguaging and its influence on cultural identity development.

Abstract

The movie portrays aspects of human life, including ecological awareness, which extends beyond preserving natural elements like mountains and rivers to encompass human impact, waste, pollution, vehicles, and global warming. This research aims to examine how Toy Story 4 (2019) conveys ecological awareness through verbal and visual semiotics in selected scenes. The study focuses on a 3-minute and 20-second segment featuring Bonnie, the first character to display ecological awareness. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, 237 data points were analyzed based on theories by Kress Van Leeuwen, Baldry Thibault, and Halliday. These data were categorized into phases and sub-phases. While the film's utterances predominantly feature declarative moods (88%), along with imperative and interrogative moods (6% each), none directly address ecological themes. Instead, ecological awareness is visually represented in Toy Story 4 (2019) through visual grammar, particularly interactive meaning, to effectively illustrate and encourage environmental action for young audiences.

Abstract

In this study, oral language use was examined in the context of interpersonal communication in order to identify the potential for EFL acquisition. The researchers have chosen a qualitative research approach to help them accomplish the aforementioned goal. In Shambu Town, Oromia, Ethiopia, secondary schools were systematically observed and 45-minute chunks from four EFL teaching courses were videotaped for the study. It is discovered that the teacher fosters language acquisition by overseeing student efforts and emergent knowledge gap fillers by using meticulous transcriptions of such activities and the micro analytic lens of conversation analysis. The efficient use of resources, including corrections, prompt repairs, and thorough explanation, serves as a proof of this. The study offered suggestions for how to enhance L2 acquisition by mixing up language usages in the classroom. The findings have significance for research on interactions in EFL classes, directed language learning, and studies on oral language use in language learning.

Abstract

This research aimed to identify the translation procedures employed in the startup guide for the Sony Xperia C5 Ultra Dual Smartphone from English to Indonesian. The ata were collected from the guide and analyzed using a descriptive qualitative method, focusing on established translation procedures. Translation theory categorizes these procedures into seven types: borrowing, calque, literal, transposition, modulation, equivalence, and adaptation. The studies revealed that five of these procedures—literal, adaptation, borrowing, transposition, and modulation—were used in the translation process. The results showed that literal translation was the most frequently applied method, with 19 out of 48 items translated in this way. Adaptation translation accounted for 12 items, while borrowing and transposition were each applied to 8 items. Modulation was the least utilized procedure, appearing in only 1 item. This analysis highlights the predominance of literal and adaptation methods in translating technical documents, emphasizing the importance of accurate and contextually appropriate translations in user guides for electronic devices.

Abstract

Raya and the Last Dragon is a popular animated film from Walt Disney Animation Studios, featuring an antagonist named Namaari. This study aims to examine the interactive meaning of a particular scene and determine the representation of power by Namaari as the female antagonist character during the orientation stage, specifically from minute 0:11:54 to 0:16:37. To identify the representation of Namaari in the movie, a combination of verbal and non-verbal modes is analyzed. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method, utilizing Kress and van Leeuwen’s visual grammar theory to investigate movement, Baldry and Thibault’s approach to analyze the macrophase, and Halliday’s textual metafunction to examine the verbal mode. Additionally, Sutherland's power model, incorporating Allen’s conception of power, is used for a deeper analysis of female power. The study reveals that Namaari embodies different types of power as a female antagonist, such as power-over, power-to, and power-with, based on the frameworks of Sutherland and Feltey. Besides adapting masculine traits, Namaari demonstrates her power through verbal clauses, detachment, and equality angles. These features portray Namaari as an equal to Raya, both verbally and visually. Namaari tends to convey information through declarative clauses, adopting a friendly demeanor (using positive face strategies) to deceive Raya and gain access to the Dragon Gem.
