Abstract

The feeding practices of infants and children (PMBA) at the age of 6-24 months should be done correctly and appropriately. Errors in feeding in this period may cause malnutrition and stunted. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of counseling by Posyandu cadres on changes in infant and child feeding practices (PMBA) done by mothers among infants and children aged 6-24 months. Quasi-experimental research design with one group pre-post test design was applied and envolving 78 mothers of infants and children aged 6-24 months. Data on feeding practices of infants and children were obtained by interviewing mothers using a structured questionnaire covered data of mothers, babies and children, health status and growth, and the practice of breastfeeding and complementary feeding as well as hygiene were also collected. PMBA practices were then being scored covered all indicators, then categorized into 3 groups : being good if the score> = 80, enough 60-79.9 and less if the score is <60. T-test and Wilcoxon rank test were used at the significance level of 0.05. The average value of infant and child feeding practices by caregivers before counseling was 70.0 and increased to 75.2 after counseling. PMBA practices of mothers categorized as good increased from 25.3% to 46.7%. This study showed that there was an effect of counseling on the improvement of feeding practices for baby by mother/ caregivers (p <0.01). In conclusion counseling carried out by Posyandu cadres may improve the practice of PMBA by mother for their infants and children at the aged 6-24 months.

Abstract

The preschool period is identified as a critical period for the development of childhood overweight. Physical activity and food intake are factors that affect nutritional status. Physical activity of preschool children is affected by parents through physical activity parenting. The objective of this study was to analyze the impact of physical activity parenting practice among overweight preschool children. This research was a case-control study with preschool children as the subjects. The total subject was 40 and divided into case and control groups. Case group were selected based on z-score and matched with sex in control group. Nutritional status was measured based on weight-for-height z-score (WHZ). Physical activity level was measured using the Preschool-Age Physical Activity Questionnaire (Pre-PAQ). Physical activity parenting practice was identified using the Preschooler Physical Activity Parenting Practice Questionnaire (PPAPP-Q). Food intake history was obtained using Semi Quantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire (SQFFQ). Data were analyzed using Chi-square, Fisher's Exact, and Logistic Regression. Result showed that physical activity parenting practice (p=0,011) and physical activity (p=0,004) were risk factor of overweight among preschool children. Children with inactive physical activity were 7.66 times more likely to become overweight. Children with parents applied parenting practices discourage toward physical activity were 6.16 times more likely to become overweight. Children need to always be active at least 120 minutes a day. Parents recommend to apply physical activity parenting to encourage them to be more active physically.

Abstract

Doing breakfast among children is a public health concern as seen at one of the messages in ?Indonesian balanced nutrition which state ?breakfast every day?. The aim of this analysis is to determine the quantity and quality of Indonesian children?s breakfast based on children and parent characteristics, as well as nutritional status. Subjects were 2629 children, aged 2.0?12.9 years, included in the Southeast Asian Nutrition Study. The amount of the breakfast is categorized as very inadequate if <15 percent; inadequate if 15 to < 25 percent; or adequate if ? 25 percent of the Indonesian RDA. The quality of breakfast was categorized as ?not good?, if the breakfast skips one or more components of energy, protein and/or vitamins/minerals, or ?good? if the breakfast provides energy, protein and vitamins/minerals. The results indicated that on average only 31.6 percent of the children were categorized as having adequate breakfast consumption and 21.6 percent having good quality breakfast. Only 9.2 percent of children have adequate and good quality breakfast. Adequacy of breakfast differed between children, parent characteristics, and nutritional status, but only age has an association with the quality of breakfast (p<0.05). The nutrition education about good breakfast should be included as the part of curriculum, and school canteens provided a good food, as well as a campaign about Indonesian balanced nutrition slogan number 1 ?have breakfast every day? should be socialized.

Abstract

HbA1c is a parameter that may be used in predicting and diagnosing diabetes. Since diabetes is predicted to increase in Indonesia, it is necessary to understand the distribution and associated factors of HbA1c in the general Indonesian population. However, those data are still limited. This study aims to determine the distribution of HbA1c and its associated factors in Indonesian adults. We conducted a cross-sectional study analyzing data from Indonesia Family Life Survey (IFLS) 2014-2015. HbA1c was analyzed using dried blood spot (DBS) specimen with Bio-Rad D10 HPLC. We performed Student?s t test and ANOVA to show the results of the bivariate analyses and multiple linear regression to determine the association between variables. The study included 4.101 subjects (20-59 years) without diabetes and provided an overview of the distribution of HbA1c levels based on socio-demographic factors and smoking behavior described in percentiles. The mean of HbA1c was 5.35% with a standard error of 0.01. The threshold value of HbA1c for prediabetes (5.7%) corresponded approximately to the 75th percentile. Although there were differences in HbA1c distribution, socio-demographic factors such as education levels, employment, and settlement region as well as smoking were not independently associated with HbA1c levels in Indonesian adults. Furthermore, age and sex were associated with HbA1c.
