Abstract

The karst area in Pati and Grobogan is the western segment of the Rembang Zone on the northern karst of Java which has not been studied intensively by the archaeologists. This article describes the potential cave occupation sites in the karst area of Pati and Grobogan. Data for this article was collected through field surveys and analysed using a qualitative and quantitative methods. The qualitative method served as data filters before the quantitative analysis. The quantitative method was applied to rank the observed objects based on the variables of accessibility, morphological, and archaeological data. The results demonstrate that the karst segment in Pati, especially in the Sukolilo subdistrict, has a higher potential than the karst area in Rembang and Grobogan. Out of the 29 caves surveyed, five are archaeologically potential as prehistoric settlements. Of the five caves, only one cave is ranked as having high potential and the rest is ranked as medium potential. Regarding their location, the five caves with archaeological potential are scattered along the north side of the karst hills of the Pati Regency area.

Abstract

As a heritage site today, Borobudur is arguably constructed from stories of ancient grandeur, regrettable loss, and colonial rescue, infused with lingering aesthetics of colonial construction. This paper discusses the historical deconstruction of the process of historical knowledge production of Borobudur by analysing the Babad Tanah Jawi manuscript produced from the late 18th century to the early 19th century by Javanese courts. The result shows that during the Early Modern Java, Borobudur held significant spiritual quality for the local communities, unlike the previous interpretation by the colonial authorities.

Abstract

The Muarajambi Temple Complex is a Buddhist Cultural Conservation area in Sumatra, located in 3,981 hectares fluvial landform. This area is frequently flooded, both during the rainy season and the high tides, but local people are still living in this area. This paper discusses the research on the waterscape transformation in the Muarajambi Temple Complex based on collective memory and the related physical evidence. The research method used is the comparison of satellite images using GIS software and the confirmation of the results by the local people through interviews. The research results indicate that, unlike the previous interpretation, the water network had not been an all-time active transportation infrastructure. In addition, the research identified numerous ancient hydrological landforms in the area.
