Abstract

The Bontang Kuala urban village was originally a settlement of the Bajau tribe, which has a unique culture and tradition based on the local wisdom values in it. This study aimed to determine the concept that serves as the bottom-line for the unique spatial patterns of settlements formed by using a qualitative inductive method with a phenomenological approach. Study results showed that the formation of residential spaces for the people of Bontang Kuala urban village is based on the “makdanakan” philosophy. This philosophy gives both physical and non-physical influences in the formation of residential spaces.

Abstract

This study aims to reduce heat gain and minimise cooling energy through building envelope material as a passive design intervention strategy to achieve thermal comfort. Integrated Learning Building in the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia, is used as a case study due to its air conditioning setting. First, the material characteristic of the building envelope is calculated using the Overall Thermal Transmission Value (OTTV) calculation to determine heat gain and the EDGE (Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies), a software to estimate cooling energy consumption. Then, a passive design intervention strategy is performed by adding insulation (polyester, bagasse, and recycled textile and paper) and substituting window glazing (reflective, PVB laminated, and Clear IGU Low-E). The results show that the combination of recycled textile and paper insulation and clear IGU Low-E window glazing has an OTTV value of 24.89 W/m2 which is lower than the standard in Indonesia (35 W/m2). Meanwhile, the cooling energy usage shows an energy consumption of 1.14% lower, but it did not achieve the 5% reduction target. Therefore, further intervention on other parts of the building envelope, such as the roof and floor, should be observed to achieve higher energy-saving potential.

Abstract

There is a need to preserve areas with distinct identities by utilizing several local architectural potentials to develop their appearances. One example of this is in the Denpasar and Badung regions of Bali, where the use of peciren bebadungan ornaments is currently being applied to shape their respective identities. The peciren bebadungan is an expression of brick tectonics with strong, hard, and simple characteristics. However, it has been observed that the designs of some public building facades in Bali were produced without due consideration for the meaning and philosophy of these ornaments. Therefore, this research was conducted to examine and analyze the importance of the cultural value symbol expression associated with the peciren bebadungan in Bali using a qualitative exploration method. The findings showed the implementation of the style on several public buildings in Bali, specifically in Denpasar City and Badung Regency, in combination with contemporary designs. Some others also apply the style but with incomplete implementation and modification through a simpler and more minimalistic concept. This was observed to have eliminated the inherent meaning and cultural symbol value. Therefore, it is recommended that the government, architects, as well as the entire community, need to play a very important role in preserving the peciren bebadungan cultural value symbol expression.

Abstract

The development of cities in Indonesia must be connected to the role of the Dutch colonial government. Cities were built from an indigenous village by creating a grid pattern to divide the village into residential blocks with the traditional market as the center. The Chinese, as immigrants, had no choice of work other than being traders. Currently, in Pasar Baru, the first commercial area in Bandung, Chinese-style shophouses are still recognizable, and some have been designated cultural heritage buildings. Unfortunately, some more are no longer intact, split into several units, or transformed into other shophouses. This study aims to show how Chinese society has continued to trade as tradition and how the shophouse as a legacy has adapted. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative using several case studies. From survey observations, it can be seen that the transformation of shophouses begins with the division of shophouses in a transverse direction so that each unit still has road access to continue the trading tradition. The success of the descendant's continued tradition has made Pasar Baru the most prominent trading center in Bandung and serves other cities around Bandung.

Abstract

This paper aims to trace and map the variety of Double Skin Façade (DSF) in residential designs in Indonesia. This response to issues regarding technology development, design strategy, and the role of DSF in buildings related to aesthetic, environmental, and materiality issues in design practice. A qualitative approach with a descriptive observation case study method was conducted on various modern residential architectural designs buildings in Indonesia to illustrate how designers positioned this double skin facade in their design. The connection between the DSF with tectonic, aesthetic, sustainability, and environmental issues is shown in this study. This paper set the study boundaries for exploring residential designs' typology because the limited scale project allowed the designer to have considerable flexibility and exploration of creativity. The residential architectural design also allows the role of the DSF to be integrated with a passive design strategy, compared to commercial or public building design. The findings suggest various strategies and design exploration mapping related to DSF design. The results show that it can form a new character for contemporary Indonesian architecture and become a catalogue of exploratory, strategic, and responsive design elements in its practices.

Abstract

Customary and traditional villages, also called vernacular cultural landscapes, are local settlement units whose inhabitants adhere to ancestral beliefs. It is important to conduct research on vernacular cultural landscapes in Indonesia, given the usual and concerning degradation of cultural landscapes. Different places have different cultures and different customary rules and habits. Each has its uniqueness and distinctiveness, so there is no one standardized approach or method that can be adapted to study the vernacular cultural landscape. Different places may require different research approaches or methods; even the same place if studied under a different topic or time frame, may also require a different approach or method. There are research approaches commonly used by the researcher of the vernacular cultural landscape, including phenomenology, narrative study, case study, grounded theory, and ethnography. This article will review one approach that can be an alternative for the researcher of the vernacular cultural landscape, namely Symbolic Interactionism. Symbolic Interactionism is an approach that can be effectively applied to study human groups, community life, and social interactions. Symbolic interactionism is able to reveal the relationships that occur naturally among members of the society, particularly the relationship between intangible symbols, rules, norms, and daily activities, with tangible things such as the formation of space, buildings, circulation, and other physical configurations.

Abstract

Earthquake-prone environmental conditions require the vernacular community in Bima Regency to adapt by carrying out 'innovations' in their stilt houses' structural and construction systems. The bottom structure tends to remain, while the top tends to change. This study aimed to identify the differences in the types of wood joints between the elements and the roof construction on wooden stilts of Mbawa, Maria, Sambori, and Kole Village, Bima Regency, in the context of their adaptability to earthquakes. Case studies through observation and documentation are carried out for data collection and identification processes. The documentation results are then analyzed to ensure the connection type between the elements on each part of the roof truss. Five types of roof truss construction are found, each with some wood connection type: pin, rigid, and friction joint. The integration between joints of the roof truss with the unique construction developed to date has proven to adapt to earthquake-prone environments. The changes made by the community to improve the seismic adaptability of uma panggu show that the local seismic culture is still developing in Bima Regency.

Abstract

This paper investigates the impact of modern and contemporary trends on an eighty-seven years’ old mosque in Jos built in the typical Hausa Vernacular Architectural style, as well as the extent to which its vernacular features have been lost and/or retained. The study focused on selected architectural features which do not essentially affects the performance of the primary mosque's functions. A qualitative survey was adopted using case study approach and complemented with content analysis of related literature reviewed to extract information on the challenges of restoration and preservation or conservation of the key features of traditional Hausa Architecture on the Mosque buildings in the study area of Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria from the randomly selected traditional/indigenous builders and practicing architects. The Yandoka Street Mosque was purposively selected as a case study, because of its historical antecedence, religious and communal attachment, as well as its socio-political and cultural relevance in the study area. Information was collected using the unobtrusive observation method and were descriptively presented in the form of layout plan, material deduction, construction techniques and technology adopted for the mosque’s construction. Findings shows that, the influence of the identified key factors have become a threatening phenomenon to the survival of the preservation and conservation historical values and heritages of Hausa mosque architectural style. The paper advocates preservation and conservation of the original mosque architectural style from the point of view of sustainability and made recommendations towards the preservation, development and execution of strategies for branding, national identity and protection of value systems for the public good

Abstract

Open-plan offices have become widely adopted in various industries as a workplace environment. However, this office layout type suffers from speech privacy, which can be represented by the acoustic parameter known as the Speech Transmission Index (STI). ISO 3382-3:2012 provides guidelines for calculating the acoustic parameters of a room tailored explicitly for open-plan offices. However, the existing method in ISO 3382-3:2012 requires a parallel layout of workstations to determine the STI value, which is hardly found in modern office settings. This study presents a technique to predict the ideal values of rP and rD, based on the relationship between %Alcons and the Speech Transmission Index (STI) for a specific workstation, using linear regression and in-situ measurements. The analysis of acoustic conditions in an open-plan office reveals that modified techniques can predict the acoustic quality in a modern office layout. The D2, S values indicate good acoustic quality, but the Lp, A, S,4m values do not meet the required standard. Using %Alcons equations, the study shows how to predict distraction distances and categorize workstations as 'Distracted' or 'Not distracted'. The results indicate only a small percentage of workstations allow for private communication.

Abstract

The Tegalluar and Gedebage areas in Rancanumpang Village have been identified as potential transit-oriented development (TOD) sites. However, these areas face challenges due to their low elevation, which leads to ground level reductions and seasonal flooding. To address these issues, it is crucial to incorporate a water-sensitive urban design (WSUD) approach into the development of an interconnected and integrated transit-oriented area. Therefore, this study aims to propose an alternative design for the Tegalluar transit-oriented area, focusing on factors such as density, diversity, design, destination accessibility, distance to transit, and environmental considerations. A fragmental method was applied at different stages of the design and this led to the development of an alternative conceptual design simulation for the transit-oriented area based on the desired factors.
