Abstract

Museums have an important role in preserving the journey of a nation. Museum records prove or evidence of the journey, like culture, language, politics amongst many other things. The success of museums to deliver information and communicate the content to museum visitors and other users rely on a strategic display method. There are many categories of museum objects, each has its story to tell. However, the method to display this fast information has limitations, usually regarding the availability of physical space. Hence, study is needed to help museum designers or administrators determine which method is an optimum solution to deliver the information to the visitor. Therefore, it is the intention of this research to conduct study through survey to museum visitors or users of their preferred basic approach of display methods which are aesthetic, intellectual or thematic. The method used for this research is visual research method. The visitor’s perception about the preferential method of display is extracted using a visual questionnaire followed by a structured interview. The research found that the 3-basic approach of display is vast depending on the categories of the object exhibits. History category is preferred to be displayed in an intellectual display approach, while as fashion, festival, language, music, artefact and influential people/figures categories, they are preferred to be displayed using the aesthetic approach. Thematic display approach is considered effective to present the object of food, dance and architecture category. The result of the research is then developed into proposed display design as a reference for museum designer or administrator to display objects effectively.

Abstract

Hausa Vernacular architecture is informed and shaped by cultural and religious values, wherein, Dakali and Zaure are unique features that plays a pivotal role. Cities are metaphorically described as historically solidified environment in time and in space. Thus, depicting physical, archival and artefacts of the past and present, from which it develops the future of human civilization and cultures set in a time series continuum. Hausa vernacular architecture is gradually getting evolved through modern trends by renewing, re-ordering and replacement of these features. Therefore, there is the need for studies to be carried out extensively on or before adaptation, adoption and implementation of evolving trends, in order to conserve and preserve the Hausa man’s cultural and religious values in their architecture. The paper seeks to draw attention towards the preservation and conservation of indigenous heritages through vernacular architecture, especially with the examples from the characters of Hausa architecture, without arguing for a complete reversal to the past life styles, value and techniques that would neither be out-of-place with emerging trends and acceptability of modern technology nor be balkanized. Information was essentially extracted from relevant literature on the subject matter; adopts purposive sampling and content analysis method in the selection of study area and sample size; as well as, in the extraction of features of Hausa vernacular architecture respectively. This was complimented with field survey in the form of interviews, observation and case study. Results therefrom were discussed and descriptively presented. Findings revealed that, the identified features have remained prominent and continued to perform their expected functions. The paper conclude by underscoring the need to stimulate awareness, rejuvenate and regenerate the Hausa/Fulani vernacular architecture and cultural-heritage perceptibility through creative and integrative use of architectural designs and planning concepts and skills that will be sensitive to the rebirth of cultural symbols, relics, configurations, ornamentations as symbolic expressions depicting history, branding and conveying one message or the other, about the inhabitants for better understanding and conservation of fun-memories of the cultural/traditional values and heritages.

Abstract

Technology plays an essential role in people's lives. These include smartphones, tablets, iPhones, television and others. In today's cultures, gadgets have become a trend for life and information, not just communication. All information and dailies, including shopping, payment and entertainment, are provided on this device. Users of gadgets are very heterogeneous, from older adults to the young child. Unfortunately, gadgets are also popular among children, bringing both positive and negative impacts for children. Excessive use of technology such as gadgets among children will cause a side effect for them. They spend large amounts of time doing these things while ignoring their body posture, screen brightness, and having a very near screen distance from their eyes, affecting their vision and health. Some parents use the gadget as an easy way to calm down their kids when they are in a tantrum. As a result, significant attention is required from socials and communities where children grow and develop, such as parents, caregivers, educators in early childhood education schools, and society as a whole, to reduce the adverse effects of gadgets on children.

Abstract

Sick building syndrome (SBS) is a condition that afflicts occupants of a building, typically a workplace, and is linked to time spent in the building(Thach et al., 2019). The precise cause for SBS is still unknown. However, there are a few possibilities that is believed to be the cause of SBS such as poor ventilation, bad lighting design, presence of mold, fungus and formaldehydes which is usually found in wood furniture. This research paper focuses on the furniture factor of SBS. Certain material and finishes used in furniture production are harmful to the users as it has the potential to emit chemical substances from the wood composite products(Jeon et al., 2011) which could affect the indoor air quality. Furniture production may not sound harmful, but if the processes were observed in detail, we can see animal exploitations along the progress. Adhesives used to join the furniture may have substances that are derived from animals. The objective of this research is to study the chemical component in an animal-based adhesive and plant-based adhesive in wood furniture that is commonly used in lobby or lounge area (sofa, coffee table, etc.). With the chemical components identified, it is used to see how it contributes to the Sick Building Syndrome and which adhesives will be a better option for furniture production. This research also aims to compare animal-based and plant-based adhesives in terms of quality and cost. This research uses the qualitative method in which we look at past research first-hand observations, interviews, data, etc. The outcome by the end of this research will achieve all research objectives and suggest a better adhesive in wood furniture production whether it is animal-based or plant-based adhesives that has the least effect to SBS. This research can be beneficial to all furniture companies that are finding an alternative for a safer and greener choice of adhesive in wood furniture production. This research can also be a guideline to help improve the quality in furniture production and reduce the risk of SBS.

Abstract

The place identity needs to be resurfaced visual-architecturally through place-making and community engagement. From participatory identification of tangible and intangible cultural assets, cultural mapping can increase awareness of cultural assets and a sense of belonging, facilitate network development and collaboration, and prepare village development programs according to local potential. This study aims to compile the potential and resources of Kampung Baran in a participatory manner, and then present it as significant cultural character data in shaping the identity of the place. The research was conducted qualitatively through asset mapping and community identity mapping. Asset mapping is related to the physical resources, while community identity mapping identifies intangible resources. Physical data recording is done through field observation. The on-site data mapping is triangulated through focus group discussions and in-community conversation to identify the intangible resources. Furthermore, the data were categorised, and the relations were analysed to compile the cultural mapping. The results showed that the unity between architectural elements (recontextualization of Omah Gejug), communal space according to the taneyan pattern of Kampung Baran, typical plants, local culinary, traditional arts and language, as well as socio-cultural systems and structures can be visualized to support the revitalization of place identity.

Abstract

Like other developing countries where traffic is a significant sound nuisance, traffic in Indonesian urban areas is boisterous. How this condition is regulated by the Indonesian government so that the community can live healthily and comfortably is a very crucial issue. Unfortunately, Indonesia has not had any sound environmental improvement since the regulation was enacted. Additionally, regulators and government officers who run the rule carelessly worsen the condition. This study aims to study how sound is regulated in Indonesia’s central and local governments, what types of sound or noise and levels are covered, and whether recent local regulations have been enacted to regulate sound in Indonesian cities. The study mainly uses quantitative, i.e., snowball or chain referral sampling techniques, to collect sound regulations applied in ten large and busy cities in Indonesia. Then, the qualitative stage was conducted based on the content of the rules. The data shows that the Indonesian government at both the central and regional levels does not have legal standing to regulate noise caused by the absence of noise regulation at the statutory level that can force those who violate the law to be punished. The only regulation is by the Minister of Environment, dated 1996, which is referenced nationally and adopted by most cities without or with minor modifications. This study found that (1) six of the ten cities regulate only one type of noise among various types of noise, (2) twelve of the 35 local regulations incorporate noise regulations into air pollution regulations instead of stand-alone regulations, (3) because provinces and cities adopt central regulations, the lowest noise level follows the central standard at 55 dB for settlement area without specific frequency ranges, (4) there is no straightforward procedure on how measurements to be carried out except in regulations stipulated by Yogyakarta province. There is also a fact that a standardized procedure for measuring noise is vital to be included in the regulation because unskilled government officials collected invalid data in dealing with a noise complaint leading to an unresolved situation.

Abstract

Catholic church architecture is part of the development of architecture, especially in Europe. The rationalism and density of iconic Catholic church buildings in Europe raise the allegation that the architecture of the Catholic church during the modern movement was not found in Europe but appeared in missionary areas, including Indonesia. Queen Wilhelmina adopted the ethical policy in 1901 was a driving factor for the emergence of modern-style buildings in Indonesia, including the Catholic church building. Symbols and ornaments are part of the architecture of the Catholic Church; this is contrary to the anti-ornament school of modern architecture. This research looks at the architecture of the Catholic Church in Indonesia during the 1890 - 1945 period of the modern movement. The research method used descriptive qualitative with secondary data collection. The results showed that the architecture of the Catholic Church in Indonesia during the modern movement had an identity: geometric shapes on the facade, simple symbols and ornaments and a three-dimensional roof.

Abstract

For Javanese people, a house serves as both a shelter and a symbol. a representation of one's value, dignity, and perfection as a human being, especially for men. According to Javanese philosophy, a man is considered ideal if he already possesses a wisma, wanodya, turangga, curiga, and kukila. The house can serve as both a symbol and a window into the personality of those who live there. The pendopo serves as a gathering place and performs various tasks while displaying the emblem and persona of the owner. The pendopo performs several roles that reflect social standing and the owner's image in addition to acting as a collaborative or public place. The research aims to examine the Dalem Wuryaningratan in Surakarta. The focus of the study is on the application of the symbol and image of the owner in the pendopo. The research method uses a qualitative approach that produces descriptive data through observing objects, conducting interviews, and reviewing documents. Dalem Wuryaningratan is a well-preserved heritage building in Surakarta. The building is a legacy of KPH Wuryaningrat, the original owner. Meanwhile, the new owner, Haji Santosa Doellah, is a batik entrepreneur in Surakarta. The building is now called the House of Danar Hadi, and it is located in the area of the Danar Hadi batik museum. The building is a mix of Javanese and European (Indische style). Although it is no longer a residential building, the image of Javanese nobility is still maintained to preserve the structure. In particular, the appearance of the pendopo reflects the status symbol and embodiment of Javanese nobility.

Abstract

Currently, the design of unfenced houses is an option that is equal to the number of people who prefer fenced houses. The preference of housing design has various qualities and environmental disturbances that have impacts on the comfort and security felt by occupants. This study aims to identify the meaning of comfort and security from occupant’s perspective against the choosing of housing concept. The research was carried out in two steps, the first step was performed qualitatively with an open-ended questionnaire. The second step of research was continued quantitatively by collecting data using an online questionnaire with close-ended questions. The results of the data collected were analyzed using factor analysis and multivariate regression analysis. The final result of the research found that the presence of a fenced or unfenced did not affect the meaning of comfort and security in the dwellings. Factors from environmental disturbances also did not affect the comfort and safety of occupants in choosing the type of housing where occupants already understand the situation that is being completely limited. This is very closely related to the pandemic situation when the research was carried out. The meaning of comfort and security is more influenced by the ability of the occupants themselves to adapt doing activities in their homes or in their territorial environment.
