Abstract

Manual material handling (MMH) is a major component of work activities in Indonesia, however it is often performed incorrectly. This can increase the risk of occupational accidents, such as musculoskeletal disorders. According to WHO data, musculoskeletal disorders are the second leading cause of disability worldwide. Based on this issue, this study aims to evaluate working posture and physiological workload risks among workshop operators at CV. XYZ, Sleman, Yogyakarta. It also provides ergonomic-based improvement recommendations. The methods used include Energy Consumption (BMR), Cardiovascular Load (CVL), Nordic Body Map (NBM), and Rapid Entire Body Assessment (REBA). Data were collected through direct observation, interviews, pulse rate measurement, and documentation of working postures from four operators. The results show that the energy consumption was adequate for all workers. Three out of four workers had REBA scores in the high-risk category, and one worker showed fatigue with a %CVL value above 30%. Musculoskeletal complaints, mainly in the back and calves, were consistent with Nordic Body Map results. Adding chairs and worktables reduced REBA scores to the medium risk category at all workstations. The proposed ergonomic design could minimize Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs), increasing comfort and productivity. Regular posture and workload evaluations are recommended. Implementing ergonomic work design has proven effective in reducing risks and improving performance.

Abstract

Construction work involves high physical demands and frequently results in non-ergonomic working postures, particularly during bending, lifting, and repetitive manual activities. Such conditions substantially increase the risk of developing Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs), especially when performed for prolonged periods without adequate recovery. This study aims to analyze the working postures of construction workers during wall-building activities using the Rapid Entire Body Assessment (REBA) and Rapid Upper Limb Assessment (RULA) methods integrated within the ErgoFellow software, and to formulate appropriate ergonomic improvement strategies. Data were collected through direct observation, photographic documentation, short interviews, and worker questionnaires. The analysis indicates that the observed postures were dominated by trunk flexion exceeding 60°, neck flexion above 20°, shoulder elevation, wrist deviation, and unstable lower-limb support. The RULA score of 7 places the activity in the “very high risk” category, requiring immediate corrective action. Furthermore, the REBA score of 11 indicates a very high whole-body risk level, signifying the urgent need for ergonomic intervention. The primary contributing factors include non-neutral postures, repetitive motions, external loads of 3–7 kg, and workstation design that does not match workers’ anthropometric characteristics. Based on these findings, recommended improvements include adjusting the height of the mortar container, using long-handled tools, redesigning the workstation layout, and providing training on proper working postures. Implementing these interventions is expected to reduce MSD risks and enhance overall safety in construction activities.

Abstract

The loading and unloading process is one of the most vital activities in port operations and plays a significant role in ensuring the smooth flow of national logistics. However, in practice, various forms of inefficiency are still frequently encountered, such as high ship waiting times, low utilization of loading and unloading equipment, and imbalances in labor scheduling and cargo flow in the yard area. These conditions increase turnaround times and hinder port productivity. To address these issues, an analytical approach is needed that can comprehensively model system behavior so that the causes of inefficiency can be precisely identified and tested through improvement scenarios without disrupting actual operations. This study aims to analyze the efficiency level of the ship loading and unloading process at the Port of Tanjung Emas Semarang by applying the Discrete Event Simulation (DES) method using Arena software. The model was developed to describe the flow of activities from ship arrival, through the service process using cranes, to the distribution of cargo to the storage area. Model validation was carried out by comparing simulation results with actual data. The results showed that the combination scenario of adding cranes and adjusting shift schedules provided the most significant efficiency improvement, with a reduction in ship dwell time of up to 20%, waiting time of up to 30%, and an increase in crane utilization of up to 83%. These findings confirm that DES is effective as an analytical tool and basis for operational decision-making at ports.

Abstract

PT. XYZ is a manufacturing company engaged in the production of electronic devices such as smartphones, household appliances, and medical equipment. All finished products are stored in the main warehouse of the Logistics Department, which has a total area of 704.76 m². However, the current warehouse layout has not been systematically designed, leading to several operational problems. These issues include product accumulation, limited accessibility to certain items, disruption of internal transportation flow, and a high risk of product damage due to poorly organized storage paths. Random placement of goods without considering product characteristics, transfer volumes, and inter-activity relationships further exacerbates warehouse inefficiency. This study aims to propose a warehouse layout redesign using the Activity Relationship Chart (ARC) approach and the BLOCPLAN method. ARC is employed to map the proximity relationships between areas based on activity importance, while BLOCPLAN is applied to generate several efficient and realistic spatial layout alternatives. The analysis resulted in five alternative layouts with varying efficiency scores, with the best alternative achieving a score of 0.75. The proposed layout is considered more optimal in supporting material flow, accelerating internal distribution processes, and improving overall warehouse space utilization. Furthermore, the new layout supports the implementation of the First In First Out (FIFO) method, which is crucial for maintaining product quality and traceability.
