Abstract

This quantitative study was conducted to find out the relationship between Foreign Language Anxiety (FLA) and the achievements of non-English major university students in Indonesia. Through descriptive analysis, the study found that learners experienced various degrees of FLA with the mean score 93.07 (SD = 17.69, N = 119). This study also found a statistically significant, negative correlation between the learners’ FLA and their achievements as measured with their grades, r (117) = -.37, p < .01. Consistent with that, significant, negative relationships were also found between the learners achievements and all the three related situation-specific anxieties, namely, communication apprehension, test anxiety, and fear of negative evaluation. Considering the results, it is suggested that both teachers and students should minimise the debilitating effects of students’ FLA. Based on the limitations of this study, some recommendations for future researches are also stated. Suggested directions of future researches on FLA in Indonesia are investigations on the relationship between FLA and achievements across different levels of education as well as thorough qualitative investigations of FLA. Keywords: Foreign Language Anxiety, learners’ achievements, correlations.

Abstract

There are two types of language acquisition, Natural and formal. In natural type children usually got their second language through their interaction with their friends when they are playing. For adults, they got their second language through their interaction with their community. The community “force” them to learn or understand the laguage used by the most speaker at the place. So, the person can speak the language without learning from formal school. Indonesia formal type, a learner has to follow the lesson inside of classroom under guidance of teacher. It is not true the statemant said that formal type will have a better result Indonesia language learning. Behavioritic theory told us that language or second language can reach through practicing the language Indonesia speaking. Because of that, someone who wants to master a language has to receive stimulus and answer the stimulus given. But mentalistic theory told us that language is innate owned by human being as a gift inside of their mind. The theory tols us that language is not a habit. Because of that human doesn’t need learn their language. They will master language or second language through interacting with other people. There are 4 factors that influence the language acquisition. First is motivation from inside of the learner. Second is age of the learner. Third is taching and learning process and the last is first language which was masterd by the learner.

Abstract

Nowadays, education tends to ignore the value of human being which consists of the liberation. The liberation value in human individual is taken by another person who yells out democracy. We can find the real fact in reality where one person takes another person’s right through an institution with democracy and quality reasons. An education scientist, Paulo Freire, gives an illustration that education today through formal institution makes robot in human who work as mechanic machine, where their independent to act and express the ideas is limited. In simple way, Freire points out that, “The absolute consistency will make life becomes worthless, discolor, and cannot be felt experience.” Based on the statement above, Freire has deschooling concept, the concept of study without schooling. It’s because the study can be done out of the formal school even in outdoor condition.
