Abstract

In response to one of the demands for EFL learners to have cross cultural competence mainly on cultures of English speaking countries, this article describes assessment model implemented in Learning Gallery technique to teach Cross Cultural Understanding. Learning Gallery as one of the innovative ways of teaching content courses with an abundant coverage of materials proves to be able to help learners to be competent in some topics of cultures. This fact has been proved by implementing assessment model, namely Student-Self Test and Teacher-Made Test. The result of this study reveals that such an assessment model brings about improving the students’ cross cultural competence and leads them to be more independent learners. Moreover, through a reflective interview given at the end of the course, they claim that by developing their own test and doing their peer’s made test, they are experienced in test development in addition to be better prepared for the test. Accordingly, this study gives a meaningful insight for EFL lecturers teaching content courses to implement Learning Gallery technique with such an assessment model in order to help the EFL learners to be autonomously independent learners and competent in their own subjects learnt.

The source of the research data is the literature in the field of Islamic education and neuroscience that is explored and collected documentary and analyzed with content analysis. The results of the study showed that the concepts of nasiyah (crown) and ‘aql (mind) in the Quran have a correlation with the brain and mind in neuroscience. Both can be hybridized so as to find new varieties of science called the Islamic Education Neuroscience. This new branch of science has the potential to be equivalent to the scientific branches that have been developing so far, such as the philosophy of Islamic education, the psychology of Islamic education, the anthropology of Islamic education and so is the neuroscience of Islamic education. Abstract

The Islamic higher educations have an important role in producing the qualified graduates. Therefore, the organization of the Islamic higher educations must be coupled with the quality of learning services. Some institutes and universities are optimizing their learning services, while the others tend to choose different service patterns since there is no standard instrument of the quality of the learning service. This research was conducted to develop an assessment instrument model to measure the learning services in Islamic higher education. This research applied a research and development approach through three stages, namely: pre-development, development, and application of the model. The development of the instrument was done through individual, small group, and large group testing through field tests involving students of Islamic higher education. The instrument model includes the aspects of tangibles, reliability, responsiveness, empathy, and assurance along with the indicators, which is, analyzed using Confirmatory Factor Analysis. The findings of the research shows that learning assessment instrument model of Islamic higher education developed by integrating some aspects categorized as goodness of fit, which is, proved by Lambda score (λ)> 0,30, ρ-score (p)> 0, 05, Root Mean Square Error of Approximation (RMSEA) <0.08, and Goodness of Fit Index (GFI> 0.90). The developed instrument has high validity, while the aspects of learning services meet the requirements and are reliably to assess learning services at Islamic Higher Education

Abstract

This study is designed as a case study and concerned on qualitative data, which reflected what actually happened in the area of case study. The Principal, the English Teachers and Students placed as the key informants. The data gained from the informants by applying in depth interview, questionnaire, documentation and observation. The data are analyzed by employing two methods, those are: descriptive qualitative and descriptive quantitative. There are two problems in this study that can be seen from two perspectives; syllabus designing and students’ needs analysis. From the perspectives of syllabus designing, the problem arise on defining a syllabus typically as the content standart which is commonly and formally provided by the higher authority (i.e. Ministry of National Education). In evidence, the existence of UN (Ujian Nasional/National Examination) makes teachers come into problems. Moreover, from learners’ needs analysis perspective, teachers define Target Situation Analysis (TSA) mainly as the content of students’ subject matters of their majors rather than students’ linguistic performance after finishing the course. Furthermore, the teachers define the Present Situation Analysis (PSA) mainly as students’ strengths/weaknesses in following the English course.

Abstract

This paper describes and evaluates a funded longitudinal teaching development project that aims to bridge the gap from classroom-based theory learning to experiential professional learning, and thereby prepare ideal and competent world class graduates. To align with the University's shared mission to foster links with the business community, the design of the internship program has a threefold purpose and was implemented in stages. It intends to enhance students' professional awareness-knowledge-skills through a multi-leveled approach integrating classroom learning with professional practice. A debriefing mechanism was also built in enabling students to share their learning and professional challenges, and theory application to problem-solving scenarios. A 360 degree multiple evaluation procedure were used to measure the project effectiveness, including the use of industry consultants, student interns, hosts, and academic supervisors.   The project has proved to promote closer ties with the business community and enhance students' professional competencies to increase future success in the competitive job market. The impact of the internship program is significant in two aspects.  From the perspective of student learning, the internship allows students to understand how they can improve business efficiency by applying communications theories.  From the teaching perspective, the successful and unsuccessful intern experiences can be drawn upon in developing class-room teaching. These lessons can focus on preparing students to solve real-world business communication problems.
