Abstract

ABSTRACT: In the current globalization era, we witness quick changes in all sectors of life, and for the society which is conscious of these changes the mastery of science and technology has become a must. The areas of science and technology chosen are certainly the ones commonly perceived to provide real contribution to the struggle with the changes. With reference to the science of history, the big question which arises is: is the science of history still needed in this globalization era considering most of its objects belong to the past? One of the answers to the question is in order to contextualize the values of history education an alternative in the teaching of history should be generated in the hope that future generation will be aware of the social values for the basis of predicting the future. Hence, learning history means understanding the past for better understanding of the current so that the future can be grabbed much better.KEY WORDS: current globalization, science and technology, science of history, future generation and understanding the past for better understanding of the current.About the Author: Dr. Tanto Sukardi, M.Hum. is a Lecturer at the Department of History Education, Faculty of Education and Teacher Training (FKIP) Muhammadiyah University of Purwokerto (UMP) in Central Java, Indonesia. Abstract

ABSTRACT: Teaching is an important process in order to produce a meaningful learning. As an intermediate program, every teacher in Matriculation College should be able to produce an effective teaching process, particularly in teaching Science which is full with abstract concepts. To achieve that, Science teachers need the teaching profile as a guidance to develop a flexible, creative, and innovative teaching process. As a result, the learning process will meet the students’ need and the objectives of twenty-first century education. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to identify the teaching profile and sub-profile patterns of matriculation Science teachers in Malaysia. For this purpose, 344 Science teachers from eight Matriculation Colleges were selected. Data was collected by using questionnaire as a main instrument. The finding showed that the professional knowledge and the professional attitudes dominate the profile patterns. While the sub-profile patterns dominated by pedagogical content knowledge and relationship among colleagues. It is also safe to say that the professionalism profile will be the ultimate key towards upgrading teachers’ quality, the quality of the teaching process as well as the quality of the product that is the students. This study suggests that the dominated profile and sub-profile show the matriculation teachers’ strength in teaching Science.    KEY WORDS: Teaching profile, Science teacher, teacher’s knowledge, professional knowledge, professional practices, professional attitudes.  About the Authors: Nooraida Yakob and Rabiatul Adawiah Ahmad Rashed are Lecturers at the School of Educational Studies USM (Universiti Sains Malaysia or Science University of Malaysia), Pulau Pinang, Malaysia. Abstract

ABSTRACT: A principal’s role is critical in sustaining or diminishing teacher commitment. Teacher commitment recorded only average in Malaysia. Accordingly, the researcher is interested in studying the relationship between transformational leadership and teacher commitment in the educational institution, exclusively in the government secondary schools in Miri, Sarawak, Malaysia. The survey instrument was developed based on conceptual framework on transformational leadership, teacher commitment, and literature review. Quantitative survey method was applied and four broadly hypothesized relationships were tested with a sample of 1,014 trained teachers serving in twenty-seven secondary schools in Miri, Sarawak. The findings showed either direct or indirect relationship between transformational leadership, teacher commitment, and moderators. They offer insights on how leadership practices affect teachers’ commitment and sense of teaching efficacy. It also necessitates for leadership development of school leaders to acquire transformational leadership qualities that are crucial in changing teachers’ attitude and improving their commitment level. Future endeavors should compare these findings with similar predictors, criterion, and moderators in other areas.KEY WORDS: School leadership, principal’s role, teacher commitment, transformational leadership, and educational institution in Sarawak, Malaysia.  About the Author: Sii Ling @ Mee Ling is a Ph.D. Student at the Faculty of Education UM (University of Malaya), Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Abstract

ABSTRACT: Kashmir is an intractable conflict between the two South Asian countries: India and Pakistan. It had affected people of tiny nation badly. Every individual suffered here in this vale of paradise which was known as the beautiful region across the globe. But its irony that due to unrest, turmoil, and cycle of violence, people lost their kiths and kens; and because of all that, State of Jammu and Kashmir suffered a lot. This valley has seen plenty of untold stories of massive violations of human rights committed by Indian army, police, and by some of the militant groups. Since 1989, the people of Kashmir were killed, tortured, humiliated, and injured. Thousands of the people were killed due to cycle of violence prevalent in Jammu and Kashmir. Thousands of the people got injuries and they became disabled to work. Many are those who lost their beloved children’s, daughters, sisters, mothers, and some women have lost their beloved husbands, who were only the source to care for them. Due to turmoil situations, thousands of the houses and shops were burnt. This study will describe how fundamental rights of the people were encroached and curtailed. It will also highlight how the people of this region were suppressed due to misuse of the armed forces. It is pertinent to mention here that no democracy can be successful where draconian and inhuman laws are prevailing. Democracy can only survive when the dignity of every individual will be respected and safeguarded. Here are tears in every mother’s eyes that lost their beloved children. Everybody here hates violence and is ready to see peaceful Kashmir without any conflict and human rights violations, may this dream of so many become reality.  KEY WORDS: Untold stories, violations, fake encounters, draconian laws, psychological disorder and suicides, disappearances in Kashmir, and human rights.    About the Authors: Dr. Hilal Ahmad Wani is a Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Centre for Peace and Strategic Studies UoI (University of Ilorin) in Ilorin, Nigeria; Andi Suwirta, M.Hum. is a Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Social Studies Education UPI (Indonesia University of Education) in Bandung; and Dr. Joseph Fayeye is an Associate Professor at the Centre for Peace and Strategic Studies UoI in Ilorin, Nigeria. Abstract

ABSTRACT: Teaching and Learning in Higher Education is an issue for educators in various fields to look into. The rapid growth of online teaching is the mode of instruction increasingly being used by educators today. The present study investigated the implementation of classnetwork.net by undergraduates enrolled in various teacher education programmes. The sample consisted of 102 teacher education students and they were given opportunities to make use of classnetwork.net (an online tool for uploading and downloading lecture notes and teaching materials). The implementation of classnetwork.net as an alternative mode of knowledge delivery to student teachers was made available to students recently. Instead of using traditional lecture method this online mode of delivery is an innovation in University of Brunei Darussalam. A survey method was used to elicited answers to researched questions. This study analyzes online skills (certain aspects) such as numbers of hours using computer and frequency of access the content in classnetwork.net. An effective communication is judged through correlation between online skills and numbers of hours and online skills and frequency of access. The study reports on the effective implementation of this tool as an innovative mode to teaching that will effect learning among students.KEY WORDS: online learning, online learning skills, instructional design, and e-learning.    About the authors: Assoc. Abstract

ABSTRACT: This study is aimed to evaluate the teaching and learning quality at the UNRI (University of Riau), which currently ranked at the top 21 best Indonesian universities and ranked at the 2,185 of the world universities ranking. The UNRI was chosen because it is the top university at the Riau Province and it offers various fields of study. The research population is all registered students for the year 2010 academic session. The instrument to test the teaching quality is adapted from a study conducted by M.D. Toland & R.J. de Ayala (2005). In overall, it was found that the lecturers’ teaching and learning quality is at the low level for the domain of course subject. Students reported that the teaching and learning dynamic is also very low, particularly due to the lecturers’ failures in integrating various methods. In addition, the absence of active interaction process is because it is very exam oriented and the lessons are normally conducted one way with only a little option for question and answer session. This result shows that students prefer to find other sources of information regarding the content of the course, instead of meeting and consulting the lecturers. In overall, the lecturers’ quality is only average which needs improvement in the aspects of teaching motivation, teaching approaches, maintaining relationship with students, efficiency, assessment, and assignments. Other than that, the result also shows the quality is at the low level for the list of courses and students relationship in the context of academic development. Obviously, the teaching and learning quality of lecturers in the UNRI needs to be upgraded in order to improve the image of the university and to attract more new students domestically, regionally, and internationally.KEY WORDS: Educational service quality, student satisfaction, quality teaching, motivation, teaching approach, academic development, and image of the university.About the Author: Dr. Suarman is a Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Education UNRI (University of Riau), Kampus Bina Widya Km. 12,5 Simpang Baru, Pekanbaru 28293, Riau, Indonesia. Abstract

ABSTRACT: The curriculum is a set of plans and arrangements concerning objectives, content and instructional materials, and ways used as guidelines for the implementation of learning activities to achieve certain educational goals. The purpose of Indonesian national education is to develop the potential of learners to become human beings, who believe and fear to Allah as One God, have a noble character, healthy, knowledgeable, capable, creative, independent, and become a democratic and responsible citizen. Indonesia has incorporated Civic Education programs in the school curriculum about a decade after the proclamation of independence in August 1945. This article, by using the qualitative method and descriptive approach, tries to explore the curriculum and Civic Education teaching in Indonesia. The findings show that more than half a century of educational education, even at all levels of education from elementary, secondary to higher education, still leaves the general and classical issues of low levels of political literate, moreover to achieve the goal of creating intelligent and skilled Indonesian citizens. Political literacy is not only political knowledge, but the ability of citizens who qualified both in aspects of knowledge, skills, and values and attitudes. In learning of Civic Education, teachers are required to develop an interesting learning process, fun, challenging, and forming learners to be able to think critically and constructively. Civics teachers should be able to present contextual learning materials, relate subject matter with real conditions in the field, set theory with practice, between expectations and reality, identify problems, and encourage learners to come up with alternative problem solving.KEY WORDS: Curriculum Development; Teaching-Learning Process; Social Life; Citizenship Education; Teachers of Civics Education.About the Author: Prof. Dr. Haji Endang Komara is a Full Professor in Sociology of Education and as Head of STKIP (College of Education and Teacher Training) Pasundan in Cimahi, West Java, Indonesia. Abstract

ABSTRACT: The urgency to improve the quality of human resources is experiencing continuous escalation. Education holds the key to answer this demand. Social science is an important part of education that is very useful to provide students with various knowledge and skills. In Indonesia, social science tends to be underestimated and many perceived social science as a lesson that only require students to memorize some subject matter without involving further and higher level of thinking. This paper tries to examine the attempt to improve social science’s effective learning process through the role of accountability’s strategic factors. This research is using quantitative approach through statistical test. The end results show that implementation of accountability in its strategic factors will eventually improve the quality of social science’s effective learning process and the graduates. In order to implement and operate an adequate system of accountability, there are various requirements that must be met. Accountability must be thorough and integrated in the institution. Accountability also requires funds and sufficient time for their implementation to demonstrate the expected output. Hopefully, the implementation of accountability in its strategic factors will enhance the dignity, value, and position of social science in order to provide qualified human resources in Indonesia’s development.KEY WORDS: Social science, human resources, improvement, accountability, strategic factors, and Indonesia’s development.About the Author: Ir. Abstract

ABSTRACT: The paper examines the assertion of reservation of seats to economically weaker section (EWS) children in unaided-private schools at state level in consequence of an agreement between a land granting authority and unaided private educational institutions. It involved considerable amount of negotiation and initiative of several stakeholders such as non-governmental organization (NGO), judiciary, and government with the private educational institutions to secure reservation. The author, as a special invitee to the state level committee which was appointed to look into modalities of EWS reservation, has recorded the deliberations which highlight the view points of the representatives of private schools and NGO. Further, interviews with the few parents of EWS children provide information on some of the ground realities. With the inclusion of 25 per cent reservation for EWS children under Right to Education Act 2009 at national level, the issues raised by the stakeholders at state level carry significance in implementation. It is concluded that in addition to effective measures for implementation of reservation for EWS children, it is necessary to improve the functioning of government schools to check excessive exodus of children to unaided-private schools.KEY WORDS: Unaided private schools, economically weaker section, elementary education, equity in education, and social inclusion.About the Author: Dr. Sreekanth Yagnamurthy is an Associate Professor  at the National University of Educational Planning and Administration, 17-B, Sri Aurobindo Marg, New Delhi 110016, India.
