Abstract

ABSTRACT: Talking about Sundanese pop music principally means talking about the concept of Sundanese music itself, which is, indeed, packaged differently. Historically, commercial music (pop music) in developing countries, such as Indonesia, did not destruct the originality of “sounds” in its local pop music; rather, it enriched the local music. The imported pop culture is a resource, a source of information on new sounds, instruments, and ideas, which can be exploited by local artists to create “a different taste of music” based on their capabilities. Popular music today is made for commercial purposes, even a commodity; however, sometimes it does not lack quality. Consequently, it is very difficult to make something original in popular music, for if originality is emphasized, people will sense that there is something uncommon in the song. On the other hand, if it lacks originality, its quality will be lowered. The aim of this paper is to discuss on Sundanese pop music. The issues covered: the existence of pop music, the existence of recording industries and Sundanese pop music, and local identity and Sundanese pop music industries, more specifically concerning the case of Nano Suratno that known as Nano S. Based on the conducted study, two hypotheses were put forward. Firstly, the Sundanese pop music of Nano Suratno is based on creative considerations; where in quality, uniqueness, and adaptation are maintained. Secondly, the Sundanese pop music of Nano Suratno is a spirit in counter balancing the national pop music industries. KEY WORDS: Popular music, Sundanese pop music, figure of Nano Suratno, tradition, structuration, adaptation, and local identity.   About the Author: Sandie Gunara is a faculty member of Music Education Department, Faculty of Language and Art Education UPI (Indonesia University of Education), Jalan Dr. Setiabudhi No.229 Bandung 40154, West Java, Indonesia. Abstract

ABSTRACT: There are an effort of dessiminating the message of Islam among the Indian Muslim in Malaysia. This attempts have been performed by Malay and Indian Muslim themselves. However, there is no clear involvement of the government activities of preaching to this community, particularly in assisting some Indian Muslim organisations. Apart from PERKIM, who purposely established for uplifting the welfare of newconverts, it is noted that no massive effort attempted by the government in order to solve many problems among this community. Until now, there are no serious effort to discuss the problem of Indian Muslims in the national level initiated by the government. In fact, the cooperation between non-government preaching organisation are loose pertaining to this matter. Nevertheless, such activities which were practiced by these group would at least maintan the slow but continuous process of preaching among Indian community in the country. One may also predict that there might be several preaching organisations would emerge to lead the India community into Islam if they are able to maintain and upgred their activities from time to time.KEY WORDS: preaching, humanity, government and non-government preaching organisation, and Indian Muslim in Malaysia.About the Author: Assoc. Abstract

ABSTRACT: Toraja-Mamasa ethnic is one of ethnics that dwell in Mamasa Regency, West Sulawesi Province, Indonesia. They have inhabited the region from ancient times until now and have a variety of uniquely cultural forms, and it is interest to study. One form of cultures that characterize the culture of Mamasa is a burial system placed in a limestone hills with wooden coffins. There have been no archaeological experts who examined the wooden coffin in the region; so, the distribution of site, form, layout, dating, and cultural significance is not known scientifically. Therefore, it is necessary to study archeologically to understand the various aspects before it destroyed, and becomes extinct of natural processes such as weathering and damaged by treasure seekers. The research of wooden coffin in Mamasa region, West Sulawesi, Indonesia was conducted by a systematic survey and sampling methods for radiocarbon dating. The study found 21 sites with a dozen pieces of coffins, which consists of boat-shaped or “bangka-bangka”, buffalo-shaped or “tedong-tedong”, horse-shaped or “narang”, round-shaped or “talukun”, and house-shaped tomb or “batutu. Wooden coffin burial sites are always located not far from villages, rice fields or gardens, and located in the south or southwest of the old village. The lay outs of the coffins are always on the sand stone hills with south or west orientation. Differences in shape, layout, and orientation are strongly influenced by factors of trust, cosmology, and social stratification concept. The dating results shows that wooden coffins have been used since 730 ± 50 BP or about 1200 AD (Anno Domini) and keep continue until the 1970’s. Abstract

ABSTRACT: The Republic of Indonesia was established based on a secular political system, but it did not follow the pure concept of the theory of secularisation. In the context of Indonesia nation-state, there were three competing major paradigms of the relationship between religion, especially Islam, and the state, that were: secular paradigm, Islamic ideological paradigm, and the “fiqh” (Islamic study of laws) paradigm. In historical process, it was a result of compromise amongst the followers of secular and Islamic aspirations. In this “Pancasila” (five basic principles of the Republic of Indonesia) state, Islam provides a moral basis for running the state. However, the proper role of religions should be negotiated amongst different political forces, such as was outlined in the seven words of the Jakarta Charter in 1945 and in the 1950s. In this regard, the traditionalist Muslims, especially the followers of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), adopting the “fiqh” paradigm, were able to develop a flexible standpoint in regard to the role of Islam in Indonesia compared to the modernist Muslims, who advocated an Islamic ideological paradigm. They (the traditionalist Muslims) were able to move from justifying the Republic of Indonesia to supporting an Islamic state and, then, again supporting the secular state. This was due to the “fiqh” paradigm recognising the existing political system, while trying to improve it at the same time.KEY WORDS: Nahdlatul Ulama, Indonesia nation-state, the traditionalist Muslims, secular, Islamic ideological and “fiqh” paradigms, and result of compromise.About the Author: Saefur Rochmat is a Lecturer at the Department of History Education, Faculty of Social Sciences UNY (State University of Yogyakarta), UNY Campus, Karangmalang, Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Abstract

ABSTRACT: It seemed relevant to discuss the role and figure of strong, tough and faithful woman in accompanying his husband’s struggle to realize his social aspiration. Such a woman figure was Inggit Garnasih, Soekarno’s wife since the period of national movement in Indonesia (1923-1943). In this context, it seemed relevant talking about the services of Inggit Garnasih not based on herself but according to other’s acknowledgement closely related with her. The other whom I meant was Soekarno, as her husband, as had been stated in his autobiography and other reviewer of Soeakrno’s biography, especially when it was related to his relationship with Inggit Garnasih. However, Inggit Garnasih did not only encourage her husband to complete his study in THS Bandung but she was also faithful to accompany her husband – in happiness and sorrow – in national movement struggle. Finally, one of statements for reflecting here is that the Republic of Indonesia’s government should give fair honor to Inggit Garnasih for her services in the age of motion in Indonesia with Soekarno’s idependence struggle. KEY WORDS: Inggit Garnasih’s roles, Soekarno’s struggle, the age of motion, and Indonesia’s independent.About the Author: Andi Suwirta, M.Hum. is a Lecturer at the Department of History Education, Faculty of Social Studies Education UPI (Indonesia University of Education) in Bandung; and Editor-in-Chief of EDUCARE: International Journal for Educational Studies in Bandung, West Java, Indonesia. Abstract

ABSTRACT: The decline of the Moslem world is caused by the internal factors, followed by the emergence of new problems that come from outside. At the beginning of seventeenth century, many Islamic territories – which have already felt the impact of economic and military pressure of Western countries to the Islamic world – gradually shifted from offensive to defensive matters. This paper aims to reveal the development of Islamic thought in historical perspective, with a view refuted the opinion of Western scholars that what the West world today is solely the result of its own product of Renaissance. The thought in Renaissance itself is a product of science and art obtained as a result of imitating the scientific progress generated by Islamic civilization in its heyday. Finally, Moslems should not reject Western modernism as well as postmodernism, but trying to walk side by side to achieve the glory that has been lost. Moslems also need to be ashamed to God for not being able to do the good maximally and do not complete an amazing “sunnatullah” (natural law created by God) such as actions that are carried out continuously.KEY WORDS: World civilizations, Islamic thought, Moslem scholars, Renaissance in the West, and historical perspective.About the Author: Dr. Syamsu A. Abstract

ABSTRACT: The polemic of literary legitimation within Indonesian literature in the era of Reformation is triggered by Saut Situmorang (2007)’s essay on “Politik Kanonisasi Sastra” (Politic of Literary Canonisation). The essay has triggered a debate within the field of Indonesian literature, and has received considerable responses from literary critics and the man/woman of letters. This paper questions the legitimacies of Ayu Utami’s novel of “Saman” and of Denny Januar Ali’s a prose-poetry of “Atas Nama Cinta” (In the Name of Love). The ongoing debate within Indonesian literature is discussed in the discourse of the canonisation of literature and its relation to theory of hegemony and counter-hegemony. However, some man/woman of letters were worried about Hans-Georg Gadamer (1990)’s thesis on the creation of presupposition and perception built on the exposition of historical situatedness. This paper also identifies the existence of oligarchic power relations between the literary agents in the legitimation of Indonesian literary works’ quality. There is bias in the mentioned legitimation and the literary community has collusioned to legitimize this literary work. Proper to mention here is the rivalry between KUK (Komunitas Utan Kayu or Utan Kayu Community) and BP (Boemi Poetera or Indigenous). The former is led by Goenawan Mohamad and the later is under the influence of Saut Situmorang.KEY WORDS: Literary Canonisation; Hegemony; Counter-Hegemony; Literary Legitimacy; Historical Situatedness.About the Author: Dr. Suyitno is a Lecturer at the Study Program of Indonesian Language and Literature Education, Department of Language and Arts Education FKIP UNS (Faculty of Education and Teacher Training, State University of Surakarta), Jalan Ir.
