Abstract

Anemia is one of the nutritional problems in Indonesia and is the higher number in female adolescents. Anemia was caused by low nutrition intake, high intake of inhibitors, and low adherence to an iron tablet. Therefore, there should be new education methods to increase knowledge and attitudes toward anemia prevention during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study aims to determine the effect of education with audio podcast media about anemia on knowledge and attitudes. We conducted a quasi-experimental with a control group design on 68 female adolescents in 4 State Senior High School, Central Jakarta. We divided subjects into two groups, the podcast group as an intervention group and the flyer group as a control group. The intervention was conducted in four phases over two weeks period. Pretests and posttests were collected using an online questionnaire shared through a messaging platform. Posttests were conducted twice, after the intervention and two weeks after the intervention. We analyzed data using Wilcoxon and Mann-Whitney test with α= 0,05. The results showed there was an increase in knowledge (p= 0,000) and attitude (p= 0,036) scores in the audio podcast group, but for the flyer group, the significant increase was only in knowledge scores (p= 0,000). However, there was no difference increase in both methods (p>0,05). The podcast was significantly more effective in increasing knowledge (p= 0,007) than flyers, but not for attitudes (p= 0,389). Podcasts could be an alternative education method for adolescents. It shows effectiveness in increasing knowledge but not in attitudes, which needs more study.

Abstract

Malnutrition is one of the public health problems that existed during the pandemic; both problems, under and overnutrition, existed. Furthermore, malnutrition can worsen the infection in all groups, including children. The risk of being infected was higher in the malnutrition group than in the well-nourished one. This article aimed to review the risk of malnutrition and possibly related factors in children during the pandemic. This article used the literature review method and was conducted by the initial 2022 from several countries. The object included in the analysis was children's health and nutrition related. The source of articles highlighted the occurrence of malnutrition in children. The source of articles was from PubMed and Cochrane Library, which resulted in 21 eligible papers. The result of the study found that the identified possible factors are self-isolation, physical activity, dietary patterns, nutrient shortage, and socioeconomic factors. There was a shift in dietary patterns among children during the COVID-19 pandemic due to several factors. Those are the scarcity of food sources and compensation for the lockdown, and those findings confirmed the possibility of under- and overnutrition among children. In low-middle income countries (LMICs), the risk of malnutrition problems in this pandemic has heightened the magnitude of the public health problem. The mitigation program should overcome the existing problem to minimize the adverse effect of malnutrition among children.

Abstract

Dyslipidemia increases the risk of coronary heart disease in people with diabetes. Increased consumption of foods substantial in fiber and antioxidants, such as sorghum, can help people with diabetes manage their lipid profiles and improve insulin sensitivity. The study aimed to evaluate how sorghum flour affected diabetic rats' plasma atherosclerosis index (IAP) score and blood lipid profile. A randomized control design was used for the research's experimental methodology. In 2019, the study was carried out at P3G Laboratory UGM. 18 male Wistar rats served as the subjects and were separated into three groups: treatment (P) (5 g/mouse/day for 28 days), positive control (K+), and negative control of sorghum flour (K-). By administering nicotinamide and streptozotocin (STZ), the DM rat model was created (NA). The GPO-PAP method was used to measure TG levels. Total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein, and high-density lipoprotein were all measured using CHOD-PAP. The log (TG/HDL) ratio (IAP) calculated the plasma atherosclerosis index. Paired T-tests, Wilcoxon, Anova, and Kruskal-Wallis, were used to evaluate the data. According to the findings, there were significant changes in the groups' baseline and post-intervention levels of total cholesterol (p=0,003), triglycerides (p=0,002), low-density lipoprotein (p=0,003), high-density lipoprotein (p=0,002), and IAP (p=0,001). In conclusion, feeding DM rats sorghum flour altered their blood lipid levels and plasma atherosclerosis index (IAP). Their LDL, triglycerides, and total cholesterol can all be reduced with a daily intake of 5 g per person.

Abstract

Thirty-seven percent of children in Aceh suffer from stunting. This number is concerning. Several programs offering supplementary nutrition for children in hot areas have been conducted. However, the percentage is decreasing too slowly. It is unclear why those programs were ineffective. The study aims to explore the cause of stunting in children aged 25-59 months in the Kota Sigli Sub-district, Pidie Regency, Aceh, Indonesia. Qualitative research was conducted on January 2022 using ethnographic tools. Data were collected through participant observation, semi-structured interviews with eight (8) mothers of stunted children, and informal interviews with midwives. Result, the findings show that there are various factors that may influence the incidence of stunting in children: failure to provide exclusive breastfeeding, inappropriate complementary feeding, and problems with hygiene and sanitation that affect children’s health. In conclusion, this calls for an integrated approach to engaging the Indonesian government, parents, and communities in overcoming the root of the stunting problem: poverty. Keywords:

Abstract

Treatment of Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is generally through optimizing a balanced diet. Soybeans and sweet potatoes have good antioxidants and can be developed as healthy foods for people with diabetes. Soybeans and sweet potatoes are processed into Soy-yoghurt. This study aims to determine the potential of soy yogurt as an antidiabetic in experimental animals, Rattus norvegicus induced by hyperglycemia, using Streptozotocin. This study used a experiment design with a total of 40 experimental animals. The research was conducted at the Medica Farma Husada Polytechnic Laboratory, Mataram, in 2022. The experimental animals that Streptozotocin (STZ) induced were then given Soy-yogurt orally at 3 ml and 3.5 ml doses. Experimental animals' Fasting Blood Glucose (FBG) levels were measured weekly using a Glucometer, while body weight (BW) was measured every three days. The results obtained were then analyzed statistically using the ANOVA test. The test results showed that there was a significant difference in blood sugar levels (p<0,05) in fasting given soy but no difference in BW (p>0,05). This study concludes that the provision of soybeans can affect the level of FBG  of the experimental animals but does not affect the BW of the experimental animals.

Abstract

One of the health issues affecting pregnant women in Indonesia is iron deficiency anemia. Iron tablet supplementation is used to manage anemia, but this program has not been successful because of low compliance from forgetfulness. The use of a reminder can increase the amount of iron pill consumption. This study aimed to determine how much iron pill ingestion was impacted by the reminder box. This kind of research uses a post-test-only control group, which has a quasi-experimental design. Sixty respondents were divided into 30 intervention groups and 30 control groups. The intervention group received iron tablets in a box marked with the day, date, and time as a reminder to take their prescription, while the control group received theirs in plastic. Both groups were observed for 30 days, recording their observations on a monitoring form. An impartial t-test was utilized in the data analysis. The average amount of iron tablets ingested did not differ between the intervention and control groups (p= 0,417), although the intervention group consumed more than the average amount. Reminder boxes enhance consumption, but additional proof is required. It is unclear whether placing reminders where they are simple to notice and access will impact compliance.

Abstract

Weekly Iron Folic Acid supplementation/WIFAS program for adolescent girls is an effective strategy for preventing anemia. However, in Indonesia, only 1,4% adhere to taking WIFAS. This study aimed to discover the factors related to adolescent girls’ adherence to consuming WIFAS in East Kalimantan. The design of this study was cross-sectional, using a purposive sampling technique to find a sample of 825 adolescent girls. The research location was the East Kalimantan Provincial Health Office from November 15 to December 15, 2021. The analytical method uses the Chi-Square test and binary logistic regression test. The results showed that the level of adherence to the consumption of iron folic acid for adolescents girl was 17,6%. The factors related to the adherence of adolescent girls in consuming WIFAS in East Kalimantan were the area of residence (p=0,023), hemoglobin check (р=0,0001), access to information on iron-folic acid (p=0,014), received/purchased iron-folic acid (p=0,000), knowledge (p=0,010) and the use of the Cegah Anemia Remaja Indonesia (CERIA) application (р=0,0001). Based on reg log analysis, factors such as having received/purchased iron WIFAS, Hb checks, knowledge, and use of the CERIA application were associated with adolescent girls’ adherence to WIFAS. In conclusion, adolescent girls with regular WIFAS consumption were easier to get WIFA, check Hb, have good knowledge and use the CERIA application. These findings suggest the need to carry out hemoglobin checks on adolescent girls, increase the availability of WIFAS and socialize the use of the CERIA app.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic raises the likelihood of food insecurity and affects the nutritional status of children. This study aims to examine the relationship between household food poverty and children's dietary diversity. The cross-sectional study has done at Lhokseumawe City and North Aceh District. A sample of 289 children aged 12–59 months participated in this study. The Food Insecurity Experience Scale (FIES) was used to measure household food insecurity. Meanwhile, the Individual Dietary Diversity Score (IDDS) was done to assess children's dietary diversity. The Chi-square was employed to analyze the association between household food insecurity and children's dietary diversity. The prevalence of household food insecurity was 8,3%, consisting of 5,5% moderate food insecurity and 2,8% severe food insecurity. Most children had diverse food consumption (88,6%). However, 11,4% of children had low dietary diversity. Household food insecurity was significantly correlated with children's dietary diversity (p= 0,002). Conclusion, the COVID-19 pandemic indirectly impacts household food insecurity, which can worsen the condition of food consumption for toddlers, especially regarding diversity in food consumption. A strategy is required to assist food-insecure households to maintain and increase children's dietary diversity.
