Abstract

Background: Stress during the match can influence the change of mood and performance of athletes. Physical exercise can improve the ability of physiologically and psychologically, but lead to fatigue, dehydration and hypoglycemia. Maltodextrin has a lower osmolarity to improve emotional and performance. Vitamin C as a cofactor of neurotransmitters can support the performance of athletes.Objective: This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of a combination drinks of maltodextrin and vitamin C on mood and the correlation with VO2 max of football athletes.Method: This research is a quasi experimental with same subject design. The subjects were 14 University state of Yogyakarta football athlete. Subjects received a drink of 15% maltodextrin and 250 mg of vitamin C in 300 ml given 30 minutes before and 5 minutes after the performance test using yo-yo intermittent test continued by physical exercise. Measurement of mood would be done in 3 times; before cardiorespiratory test, 5 minutes after physical exercise, and 15 minutes after drink.Results: There are significant changes after consuming a combination of maltodextrin and vitamin C on the confusion (p<0.05), while components of anger, fatigue, depression, tension and vigor (p>0.05). There are significant changes after consuming plain water on fatigue and tension (p<0.05), while anger, confusion, depression, and vigor (p>0.05). There are no significant differences in every components of mood between two treatments. There is a correlation between anger and confusion with cardiorespiratory after consuming a combination of maltodextrin and vitamin C.Conclusion: Maltodextrin and vitamin C has the potential effect to improve the mood condition and have a correlation with VO2 Max improvement in football athletes.

Abstract

Background: The prevalence of obesity in adolescence, both in industrial and in developing countries, is increasing. This might be due to the fact that globalization has affected the lifestyle and the eating pattern of the adolescents. Apart from related to higher risk of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, obesity in adolescents might be also related to dissatisfaction of body image.Objective: To asses the association between obesity and body image, and between body image and energy intake and physical activities of junior high school adolescents in the District of Yogyakarta and Bantul.Method: This is a cross-sectional study. Subjects were 96 pairs of 12-15 years old obese and non-obese adolescents, identified in the obesity screening programs in junior high schools in Yogyakarta and Bantul. Subjects were asked to complete 34 questions on body shape image. Energy intake and physical activity data were obtained by food- and physical-activity-frequency questionnaires.Results: Obese adolescents had higher odds to be dissatisfied to their body images compared to their non-obese peers, i.e. Mantel-Haenszel Odds Ratio (95% CI) of 14.6(6.2-34.4). Obese female adolescents had higher odds to be dissatisfied than their male counterparts, OR (95% CI) of 19.5(2.4-15.9) in female and OR (95%CI) of 13.4(5.3 – 33.8) in male adolescents. There were no significant associations between dissatisfaction status with energy intake and time spent on light physical activities. Dissatisfied adolescents tended to spend less time on hard physical activities compared to their satisfied peers.Conclusion: Obese adolescents were more likely to be dissatisfied with their body images compared to their non-obese peers, but the dissatisfaction did not lead to less energy intake and more time spent on harder physical activities.

Abstract

Background: Some studies state that fish consumption of at least 200-400 g/week can reduce the risk of coronary heart disease. Omega 3 polyunsaturated fatty acids in fish have cardioprotective effects. However, the cardiac effect of fish consumption are not primarily related to the amount of fish consumed but also its cooking method. The cooking method (eg, frying) may alter the fatty acid content of a fish meal by absorbing fatty acids from cooking oils and adding trans fatty acids. Non-fried fish consumption (eg, boiled/steamed) was associated with lower risk of coronary heart disease but fried fish was not.Objective: To identify the quantity of fish consumed and the cooking method with the incidence of dyslipidemia.Method: The study was observational with case control design in patients that checked themselves at Prodia laboratory of Samarinda. Respondents consisted of 152 patients, comprising 76 cases and 76 control. Cases were patients with dyslipidemia and control were those without dyslipidemia matched according to gender and age. Analysis used Chi-Square statistical test at confidence interval 95%.Results: There was significant difference in average of fish consumed between case and control group (164.86±63.61 g vs 218.55±62.21 g; p<0.05). There was also significant difference (p<0.05) between case and control group in variables of body mass index (24.53±2.4 kg/m2 vs 23.26±1.6 kg/m2); intake of saturated fatty acids (SFA) (34.58±5.82 g vs 28.27±5.4 g); simple carbohydrate (63.86±13.67 g vs 49.35±11.81 g); fruit and vegetable (42.61±20.17 g vs 53.48±23.47 g); and waist circumference (88.88±9.08 cm vs 86.21±7.8 cm). In the final multivariate analysis, quantity of fish consumed has no influences with dyslipidemia (p>0,05), but the influence is in the cooking method process (OR=10,84; p<0,05).Conclusion: There was no influence between quantity of fish consumption. Risk for the prevalence of dyslipidemia was 10,84 times greater in the subject who the cooking method does not suitable the recommendation.

Abstract

Background: A high-salt diet is known to cause gastritis, has been associated with a high risk of atrophic gastritis, and is considered a gastric tumor promoter. Excessive NaCl intake enhances Helicobacter pylori colonization in mice and in humans and that chronic salt intake may exacerbate gastritis by increasing Helicobacter pylori colonization. Furthermore, elevated salt intake may potentiate Helicobacter pylori-associated carcinogenesis by inducing proliferation, pit cell hyperplasia, and glandular atrophy.Objective: The aim of this research was to describe the correlation between sodium and potassium intake and relapse frequent functional dyspepsia syndrome in Sardjito Hospital Yogyakarta.Method: This was an observational research with cross sectional design. The subjects of this research were 32 course care patients in Sardjito Hospital Yogyakarta on November 2006–Januari 2007 who met the inclusion criteria. Those were who diagnosed as functional dyspepsia, with or without Helicobacter pylori infection, and above eighteen years old. Data were collected by interviewing and gathered from medical record, then analyzed using Rank-Spearman test.Results: The average of the relapse frequent of dyspepsia syndrome in Sardjito Hospital was 14.38 ±2.93, with the minimum score was 4 and the maximum score was 32. The result showed that sodium intake gave a positive relation and significant for relapse frequent of dyspepsia syndrome (p<0.05). The potassium intake gave a negative relation and significant for relapse frequent of dyspepsia syndrome (p<0.05).Conclusion : There was a positive and significant correlation between sodium intake and relapse frequent of dyspepsia syndrome, but there was a negative and significant correlation between potassium intake and relapse frequent of dyspepsia syndrome.

Abstract

Background: The elderly population in Indonesia increased signifi cantly in the last two decades as the life expectancy increase from 66.7 years to 70.5 years with impact to the emergence of diseases in the elderly. One of them is degradation of cognitive function that may disrupt productivity, daily activities, and quality of life of the elderly. Adequate micronutrients intake may help in maintaining cognitive function.Objectives: To identify association between intake of micronutrients (vitamin B6, folate, vitamin C, and vitamin E) and cognitive function of the elderly at Among Yuswa Club of Banteng Baru, District of Sleman.Methods: This was an observational study with cross sectional design. Subjects were elderly people at Among Yuswa Club of Banteng Baru, District of Sleman. Data on cognitive function was obtained using the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) and intake of micronutrients were collected using Semi Qualitative Food Frequency Questionnaire (SQFFQ). The data was analysed by chi square and logistic regression tests.Results: The result showed statistically signifi cant association between cognitive function and intake of vitamin B6 (p=0.010; RP=2.514; 95%CI=1.133-5.575), vitamin C intake (p=0.011; RP=3.039; 95%CI=1.454-6.353) and vitamin E intake (p=0.021; RP=1.266; 95%CI=1.057-1.516); meanwhile folate intake has no signifi cant association with cognitive function (p>0.05).Conclusion: There were signifi cant associations between intake of vitamin B6, vitamin C and vitamin E with cognitive function. There was no signifi cant association found between intake of folate and cognitive function in the elderly.

Abstract

Background: Hospital malnutrition is reported to be prevalent in Indonesia. Wether nutritional status at admission is associated with nutritional status at discharge and length of stay remains unclear.Objective: To assess the association between nutritional status at the admission and nutritional status at discharge and length of stay in adult hospitalized patients.Methods: A total subjects of 293 adult patients who were admitted to internal and neurology departments of Dr. Sardjito, Dr.M.Jamil, and Sanglah hospitals were included in this study. Nutritional status of each patient was assessed using Body Mass Index (BMI) measured at admission and on discharge. Information on length of stay and hospital charge was collected based on medical records.Results: Low energy intake was associated with worse outcome (OR 1,2 95%CI 1,74-11,94). Non infection diseases were also found to be associated with worse outcome (OR 6,91 95%CI 4,03-11,85) and length of stay (OR 1,83 95%CI 1,10-3,05). Prehospitalized and class of hospitalized were associated with length of stay (OR 2,34 95%CI 1,36-8,57).Conclusion: Low nutritional status on admission and low energy intake were associated with higher risk of worse outcome (OR 2,34 95%CI 1,05-5,24) and (OR 3,41 95%CI 1,36-8,57).

Abstract

Background: Increasing number of poor families leads to higher prevalence of malnourishment and malnutrition. The prevalence of malnutrition in children under five based on weight/age at the Province of Nusa Tenggara Barat and Bengkulu 2005 was above the national target. An effort made by the government to minimize the prevalence of malnourishment/ malnutrition is through the distribution of individual complementary breastfeeding for infants and children of 6-24 months old from poor families. The program had been implemented since 2003-2005 and there were problems of its implementation. In 2007 the program was re-implemented through the program of instant powder and biscuit complementary breastfeeding distribution but its achievement has never been evaluated.Objective: To evaluate the achievement of instant powder and biscuit complementary breastfeeding program at Mataram Municipality, District of Lombok Barat, Lombok Timur, and Bengkulu Utara 2007.Method: The study was observational with pre and posttest design using descriptive, analytical, quantitative, qualitative, and explorative approaches. Subjects were managers of complementary breastfeeding program at provincial, district/ municipal level, health centers, villages/integrated service post and program target. Variables of input, process, output and outcome were obtained through observation, filling in questionnaires, indepth interview, and secondary data recording. Data were analyzed descriptively, analytically, and qualitatively.Result: In the aspect of input, only human resources that was quantitavely adequate, and so were technical guideline at Lombok Timur, Complementary breastfeeding packages relevant with the quantity proposed at Bengkulu Utara. Budget for socialization and program guidebook at Bengkulu Utara were not available. Distribution method was relevant with the guidebook. In the aspect of process, planning was irrelevant with the guidebook; storage was 43.8% relevant with the requirement; distribution was 31.3% relevant with the schedule, quantity and types; monitoring was relevant with the schedule of integrated service post. In the aspect of output, the program was 78.8% relevant with target; 32.5% relevant with quantity; 95.6% could improve weight gain (p < 0.05). In the aspect of outcome: the program could overcome and prevent the prevalence of malnutrition, malnourishment and sustain good nutrition status as much as 55.6% and the result of Z-score statistical test was p < 0.05.Conclusion: Achievement of instant powder and biscuit complementary breastfeeding program in aspect of input was average at three districts/municipality and good at District of Lombok Timur and poor at District of Bengkulu Utara; in aspect of output was poor at three districts/municipality and average at District of Bengkulu Utara; in aspect of outcome was poor at all districts/municipality. There was difference in average weight target before and after the supply of complementary breastfeeding. There was difference in average Z score target before and after the supply of complementary breastfeeding.

Abstract

Background: It is a fact that natrium consumption relates to hypertension and the risk of heart disease and stroke. Even though it is common happened in later life, hypertension can be started in early age.Objective: The aim of the study is to identify salty food preference, high natrium food consumption, natrium intake, weight and its correlation with blood pressure among schoolchildren.Method: The study used cross-sectional design. There were 151 samples from junior high school chosen by purposive sampling. Food salty level data was assessed by eating the snack with three different salt concentration. High and low natrium source food and natrium intake data were taken using semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire. Blood pressure was measured by sphygmomanometer digital. Bivariate analysis was used Chi-square and Rank Spearman test.Results: The study revealed that 74,2% children prefer snack with the salt level above recommendation (> 0,5 gr salt per portion ). There were 22,5% children have natrium intake from food only ≥2000 mg (above recommendation). As much as 35,8% children fall into hypertension category based on their blood pressure (BP) level. There was a significant relationship between high natrium food consumption score with natrium intake (p=0,002). There were significant correlation between weight with systolic and diastolic BP ((p=0,000 r=-0,549 and p=0,000 r=-0,412). There were no correlation between atrium intake with systolic and diastolic BP (p=0,764;  r= 0,0025 and p=0,819 r=0,19).Conclusion: Healthy food and maintaining normal weight information and education must be done for children as early as possible.

Abstract

Background: According to WHO data, prevalence of anemia pregnancy in Indonesia is 44.3%, it’s higher than world prevalence (41.8%). Ferroportin (FPN1) is one of important iron exsporter for iron absorption, release, and recycle inside the body. The varian of FPN1-1355 G/C in promoter region, leads to increased of ferroportin expression and iron export, increased cellular iron needs, overexpression of soluble transferrin receptor (sTfR), decrease hemoglobin (Hb) and erythrocyte indices that manifest to iron deficiency anemia (IDA).Objective: This research will study the frequency of FPN1-1355 G/C polymorphism as a risk factor of IDA in pregnant women in Indonesia.Method: The research design was a case and control study. Blood samples were taken from 26 pregnant women with anemia and 48 pregnant women without anemia. FPN1-1355G/C polymorphism were determined using PCR-RFLP method. sTfR and ferritin level were measured with ELISA. Hemoglobin, erythrocyte indices, and sTfR level were compared among genotype group, then statistically analyzed using independent sample t-test and one way ANOVA. Bivariat analysis of Pearson test was conducted to analyze correlation between level of blood Hb and ferritin in pregnant women (p<0.05).Results: FPN1-1355 G/C polymorphism with frequency in pregnant women with IDA and in pregnant women with anemia non IDA were 100% and 95.2%, respectively (p=0.710; OR=1.600; 95%CI: 0.296-8.653). The mean of Hb level and erythrocyte indices in subjects carrying C allele were lower than subjects carrying only G allele although Hb level is not significantly different (p>0.05). The sTfR and hepcidin level in subjects carrying C allele were higher than subjects carrying only G allele (p<0.05). Conclusion: In this study the FPN1 gene promoter -1355 G/C polymorphism was not a risk factor for anemia, but it was a risk factor for iron deficiency anemia in pregnant women.

Abstract

Background: Optimum growth and development reflect the interaction among genetics, environments, attitude factors, and positive stimulations. The positive effect of massage on infant growth has long been recognized, but research on this phenomenon has not much been performed. The growth faltering in children begins at 1-6 months of age in Indonesia.Objective: To identify the effect of massage toward weight gain in infants of 4 months old.Method: The study was quasi-experimental with 2 groups of posttest design. The subjects were infants of 4 months old that were born in two hospitals. Those who were born in one hospital were selected as the control group and the rest were selected as the treatment group. The massage was performed twice a week for four weeks. The data of weight, food intake, illness were collected once a week, whereas the data of mothers’ knowledge and attitude toward breast milk were gathered once during the research period.Results: There was a significant effect of massage on weight gain. The median weight gain of the control group and treatment group were 0.40 kg (Q1=0.35; Q3=0.40) and 0.60 kg (Q1=0.50; Q3=0.70) respectively. The massage also affected the waz (weight for age Z-scores) where the median difference of waz at the beginning and the end of the study of the control group was –0.27 (Q1=-0.34; Q3=-0.23), whereas in the treatment group was -0.03 (Q1=-0.13; Q3=0.09). It meant that control group faced the growth faltering of –0.27 SD waz in a month and treatment group did it for –0.03 SD waz in a month.Conclusion: Infants who got massage treatment had higher weight gain than those who did not.
