Abstract

Purpose – This study aims to investigate exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) in Sokoto. Design/methods/approach – A survey type of 300 respondents was used; data were analyzed with frequency counts/percentages and an X2 test. Findings – All respondents were female (100.0%), aged 26-35 (100.0%). The majority of the participants were single (66.7%) and unemployed (66.7%), with a secondary school education (66.7%). However, 33.3% of the participants were married, were civil servants, and had tertiary education. The study revealed that the majority (66.7%) had received breastfeeding counseling during antenatal care. All respondents (100.0%) received proper guidance/counseling at home on exclusive breastfeeding. Fathers (66.7%) and mothers (33.3%) supported exclusive breastfeeding. The respondents reported exclusively breastfeeding their child for the first six months after delivery (100.0%), and weaning occurred between 19-24 months. The reasons for avoiding exclusive breastfeeding were the sickness of the mother (66.7%) and insufficient milk (33.3%). All respondents (100.0%) agreed that exclusive breastfeeding improved the baby’s health, and health awareness encourages breastfeeding (100.0%). Research implications/limitations – This study provides a limit in the form of maximum exclusive breastfeeding for children aged 24 months. Practical implications – The study suggests that counseling, support from parents, and health awareness can improve exclusive breastfeeding, and healthcare providers should provide such services during antenatal care while promoting the practice through health education campaigns. Originality/value – This study highlights the importance of counseling, parental support, and health education in promoting exclusive breastfeeding and improving the health of infants in Sokoto. Abstract

Purpose – This study aimed to develop yoga activities based on prayer movements to train children’s self-control. The subjects in this study were early childhood children in the TK B group. Design/methods/approach – This research uses development research (R&D). Feasibility assessment of the development of prayer movement-based Yoga to train children’s self-control based on the assessment of media experts, yoga experts, and group B students as test subjects. Analysis using qualitative and quantitative data analysis, collecting data using interview guidelines, observation documentation, and questionnaires. Findings – The results showed that the development of prayer movement-based Yoga through a series of trials and expert validation, was workable for training children’s self-control which included (1) the ability to regulate behavior, (2) the ability to regulate stimuli, (3) the ability to consider things and events, ( 4) the ability to evaluate events and things positively, and (5) the ability to determine actions. Research implications/limitations – This research can be the basis and guideline for further research related to Yoga based on prayer movements in training self-control in early childhood. Researchers suggest that there are other studies regarding using Yoga based on prayer movements to train children’s self-control and other abilities from an early age. The drawback of this study is that it did not conduct a practical test due to time constraints. Practical implications – This research produces Yoga products based on prayer movements. Teachers and parents can use it to train children’s self-control from childhood. So that the results of developing this product can be helpful, and other schools can practice it in training children’s self-control or other abilities after the pandemic that hit the world. Originality/value – The development of Yoga based on prayer movements can train the self-control abilities of early childhood. Researchers recommend using prayer movement-based yoga in kindergartens to train children’s self-control. Paper type Research paper

Abstract

Purpose – This article reports on a project to facilitate teachers’ digital skill improvement. The context of the project itself was the past COVID-19 pandemic, which paralized the education sector, including the closure of early childhood education (ECE) centers. While remote, online learning was highly recommended to face disastrous situation such as pandemic, in practice, especially at the ECE level, online learning faces complex challenges. On the other hand, teachers were not adequately prepared for online and digital learning. Design/methods/approach – This study combined developmental and conventional descriptive methods. The participants (15 people) were teachers, with various backgrounds of work experience (2 to over 7 years), with good internet access skills. Data and information were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation; followed by descriptive analysis. Findings – These teachers found that Podcasts could be an alternative and a variation of digital learning media. Making and using podcasts can also be an entry point in strengthening the integration of Technological and Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) in the ECE context. Research implications/limitations – While storytelling Podcast as ECE learning tool was used limitedly during the COVID-19 period, its uses may last beyond the pandemic time provided systematic integration of digital technology and skills associated with it into ECE sector is met.  Practical implications – This study implies that storytelling podcasts can be an alternative learning tool in the situation where teacher-student face-to-face interaction is less possible. Originality/value – The emergency period prevented teacher-student direct contacts. This study contributes to providing an alternative to learning in an emergency situation. Paper type Research paper

Abstract

Purpose – The proliferation of modern games has gradually eroded the existence of traditional games rich in essential cooperation values for children from an early age. This research aims to analyze the traditional jump rope game as a means to develop early childhood cooperation skills, amidst the prevalence of modern games that emphasize individualism. Design/methods/approach – This research employs a qualitative approach through a case study. Data collection involves observation, interviews, and documentation. The data analysis technique used follows Miles and Huberman's concept, including data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The research informants consist of five parents of children aged 5-6 years, with three boys and two girls as research subjects. Data validity is ensured through source triangulation. Findings – The jump rope game, commonly known as "lompat karet" due to the use of rubber as the rope in Dukuh Sewelut, demonstrates various positive attributes related to early childhood cooperation skills and positive effects on children's cooperative abilities. Research implications/limitations – This research has limitations, and its results are not intended to provide general conclusions. However, it is expected that this research can be used to understand similar phenomena. Practical implications – The findings of this research are expected to enhance our understanding of the importance of traditional jump rope games in building and nurturing early childhood cooperation skills. Originality/value – Future research will delve into traditional games that can enhance self-regulation skills in children and explore the deeper negative impacts of traditional games.   Paper type Case study

Abstract

Purpose – The purpose of this study is to determine whether the use of audiovisual media in Group B at TK Muslimat NU 19 Malang affects children's knowledge of prayer movements before and after receiving treatment and to assess the effectiveness of this media. Design/methods/approach – This research employs an experimental research method with a comparative whole-group design. The research subjects consist of 30 children in Group B, comprising 14 boys and 16 girls, divided into experimental and control groups. Findings – However, after the treatment, their knowledge and skills in prayer movements improved to a good standard, based on a two-tailed signal of 0.892 in both the control and experimental groups, with a critical t-value of 0.682. It can be concluded that the significance value is greater than the critical t-value, rejecting the null hypothesis (H0) and accepting the alternative hypothesis (Ha). This demonstrates that the use of video tutorial-based audiovisual media influences the prayer movements' quality. The coefficient of determination (R2) shows a value of 0.671, indicating that 67.1% of the ability to apply religious values is influenced by audiovisual media for prayer movements, while 32.9% is influenced by other factors or variables. This suggests that the application of video tutorials is highly effective in enhancing children's knowledge and skills in performing prayer movements. Research implications/limitations – This study implies that introducing prayer in early childhood education can be done effectively with the use of audiovisual media. Practical implications – From a practical standpoint, this research provides examples of prayer movements in accordance with Islamic principles. Originality/value – The value of this research finding lies in the early introduction of prayer, assisted by audiovisual media. Paper type Case study
