Abstract

Islam presents a moral framework in which spirituality and social responsibility are closely interconnected, encouraging individuals to embody religious values in everyday social life. However, in many peripheral communities, the presence of religious activities does not always lead to sustained ethical transformation or stronger social cohesion. This study aims to examine how da’i (Islamic preachers) in Gunung Tua, North Padang Lawas Regency, construct and implement dakwah strategies to enhance religious awareness and social engagement within a complex peripheral urban context. This research employs a qualitative case study approach to explore dakwah as a socially embedded practice shaped by relational, cultural, and structural dynamics. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, participant observation, and documentation involving twelve informants, including da’i, mosque administrators, congregants, and community leaders. The data were analyzed using open, axial, and selective coding. The findings reveal that the role of da’i extends beyond ritual preaching to function as relational moral mediators within the community. Religious awareness develops through sustained interaction, informal counseling, and active community involvement. While dakwah bil-lisan remains the dominant method, its effectiveness is enhanced through dialogical communication, the use of local language, and relatable narratives. Additionally, dakwah bil-haal, reflected in exemplary behavior and social participation, strengthens the credibility of religious messages. The effectiveness of dakwah is influenced by supporting factors such as community trust and institutional support, as well as challenges including economic constraints and digital influences.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the effectiveness of group guidance services utilizing anti-bullying puzzle media in improving junior high school students’ awareness of bullying behavior. Bullying remains a prevalent issue in educational settings, particularly at the junior high school level, where students often demonstrate limited awareness of its forms and impacts, leading to the persistence and normalization of such behavior. To address this problem, a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental pretest–posttest control group design was employed. The participants consisted of 40 eighth-grade students from SMP Negeri 6 Metro, selected through purposive sampling and divided into an experimental group and a control group, each comprising 20 students. The experimental group received group guidance services integrated with anti-bullying puzzle media, while the control group received conventional group guidance without the media. Data were collected using a 25-item bullying awareness questionnaire with confirmed validity and reliability (Cronbach’s Alpha > 0.70). Data analysis included paired sample t-tests, independent sample t-tests, and N-Gain analysis. The results indicated that both groups experienced significant improvements in bullying awareness; however, the experimental group showed a significantly higher increase compared to the control group. The posttest results revealed a significant difference between groups (p < 0.05), and the N-Gain score in the experimental group was categorized as moderate, while the control group was in the low category. These findings suggest that the integration of anti-bullying puzzle media enhances the effectiveness of group guidance services by promoting active participation, engagement, and deeper understanding. In conclusion, anti-bullying puzzle media can serve as an innovative and effective approach in preventive guidance and counseling services to improve students’ awareness of bullying behavior in schools.

Abstract

This study examines the Mengambat Boru tradition within the Walimatul ‘Urs procession in Tanjung Baringin Village from a cultural da’wah perspective. The research aims to explore how the tradition is practiced and interpreted, to identify the da’wah values embedded within it, and to analyze its relevance in the context of contemporary socio-cultural dynamics. This study employs a qualitative approach with a phenomenological orientation, focusing on understanding the lived experiences of community members. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and document analysis, and were analyzed using an interpretative phenomenological approach. The findings reveal that the Mengambat Boru tradition embodies three interconnected dimensions: emotional-familial, social-collective, and religious-spiritual values. These dimensions demonstrate that the tradition functions not only as a cultural ritual but also as a medium of cultural da’wah, where Islamic teachings are conveyed through symbolic actions, advice, and communal participation. Furthermore, the study identifies a growing tension between cultural preservation and socio-economic pressures, which may influence the transformation of the tradition’s meaning and practice. This study contributes to the discourse on cultural da’wah by highlighting the role of local traditions as dynamic spaces for the internalization and expression of Islamic values. It also offers practical insights for maintaining a balance between preserving cultural identity and ensuring alignment with Islamic principles, particularly moderation and simplicity.

Abstract

This study examines the Islamic Thought and Information for Da’wah (ISTAID) Center Medan's da'wah strategy in responding to and countering the growth of extreme and liberal religious narratives in the post-truth era. The study focuses on the da'wah strategy implemented, the challenges faced, and the impacts felt by the congregation and the institution. This study aims to understand how ISTAID designs and implements da'wah oriented towards fostering a holistic and responsible understanding of religion amidst the rapid flow of digital information. The research method used is a qualitative descriptive case study approach. Data were obtained through in-depth interviews with ISTAID administrators, religious teachers (ustadz) who provide lectures, and participants in youth development programs, supplemented by secondary data sourced from relevant journals and books. The results show that ISTAID develops a da'wah strategy through da'wah bulletins, weekly face-to-face lectures, and tiered cadre development. This strategy helps the congregation develop a critical attitude towards religious information and avoid narrow or too loose understanding. Furthermore, strengthening the community and cadres of Islamic preachers is a crucial factor in maintaining the sustainability of ISTAID's Islamic preaching in the post-truth era, which is rife with disinformation and fragmented religious discourse.

Abstract

This study examines the management practices of the Mosque Prosperity Board (BKM) at Raya Al Husein Mosque in attracting congregational participation in Fajr prayer. Despite the central role of congregational worship in Islam, participation rates remain relatively low, particularly in urban and semi-urban contexts. This research employs a qualitative case study approach, using observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation to explore how mosque management is experienced by congregants. Data were analyzed through coding procedures, including open, axial, and selective coding, to identify key themes. The findings reveal that participation is not solely influenced by religious obligation or facility availability, but emerges from a multidimensional experiential process. Four interrelated dimensions were identified: physical comfort, psychological and affective comfort, behavioral transformation, and experiential meaning. Comfort functions as a central construct that mediates the relationship between environmental conditions and congregational behavior. Physical improvements shape initial perceptions, which are then internalized into psychological comfort, fostering intrinsic motivation and leading to sustained participation. This study contributes by proposing an integrative model in which mosque management operates as a process of designing meaningful religious experiences. The findings highlight the importance of shifting from conventional management approaches toward more holistic and experience-oriented strategies to enhance congregational engagement.

Abstract

This study examines the implementation of Sufism-based da’wah management in the processes of member recruitment and development within an Islamic spiritual community. The study focuses on the conceptual framework of da’wah management, recruitment strategies, and the supporting as well as inhibiting factors influencing its implementation. The significance of this research lies in the limited number of studies that analyze Sufi communities from a managerial perspective, as previous research has predominantly concentrated on formal da’wah institutions. Furthermore, the challenges of modernity require systematic da’wah management without neglecting its spiritual dimensions. This research employs a qualitative approach using a field research method. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and documentation, and were analyzed descriptively through the processes of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that the managerial functions of planning, organizing, implementing, and evaluating are applied contextually, although not formally structured within an administrative framework. Recruitment strategies are carried out through persuasive approaches, moral exemplification, spiritual education, and dhikr practices. This study recommends an integrative da’wah management model that combines modern management principles with Sufi values to enhance adaptability and sustainability.

Abstract

This study examines how the self-image of Muslim women is represented in the Miss Hijab North Sumatra 2025 pageant, a regional Islamic beauty and talent competition held at the Raja Inal Hall of the North Sumatra Governor’s Office. The research is grounded in a constructivist paradigm and employs interpretive qualitative inquiry to understand how meaning about Muslim women’s identity is socially produced. Five informants were selected through purposive sampling based on their direct involvement in the event: three finalists, one Regional Director, and one organizing committee member. Data were generated through semi-structured in-depth interviews, non-participant observation across the series of pageant activities, and documentary analysis of official guidelines, photographs, and social-media material. Data were analysed using Braun and Clarke’s six-phase reflexive thematic analysis, while trustworthiness was established through credibility, dependability, confirmability, and transferability strategies, including triangulation and member checking. Researcher reflexivity is addressed explicitly. Guided by Stuart Hall’s constructionist theory of representation, the analysis produced four interrelated themes through which Muslim women’s self-image is constructed: (1) communicative ethics as moral performance, (2) visual modesty and the hijab as a sign of religious identity, (3) intellect and articulate reasoning, and (4) an open yet faith-anchored mindset. The findings show that the pageant operates as a representational arena in which religious, modern, and agentic femininities are negotiated rather than simply displayed. The study contributes a contextually grounded account of how Islamic feminine identity is constructed in Indonesian public space and cautions that such representation may also normalise an idealised standard of the “proper” Muslim woman.
