Abstract

This article compares refusals in English by Indonesian learners and native speakers of English. The study was done within the framework of pragmatics and particularly under the scope of speech acts. The goal was to get to know the refusals made by the two groups of respondent in terms of the number of speech act, the forms of speech acts, and the politeness strategy used in the refusals.The research involved 30 respondents consisting of 15 Indonesian Learners and 15 native speakers of English, who were Australians. The Indonesian learners were the second year students of the English Department of Universitas Gadjah Mada, while the native speakers were the students of the Indonesian Language and Culture Learning Service (INCULS) of the Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Gadjah Mada, Yogyakarta.The result showed that both groups of respondent shared some similarities in terms of the form of speech act used in their refusals. However, compared to the Indonesian learners, some of the native speakers expressed refusals in single speech acts and a combination of two speech acts. Fewer refusals by the native speakers were expressed in a combination of three and four speech acts. Another finding was that the two groups applied different politeness strategy to their refusals. Some of the Indonesian learners showed deference on their refusals, while some of the native speakers gave offers on their refusals. This study hopefully gives more insights about pragmatics, especially about refusal, and is also useful and helpful for other similar studies in the future

Abstract

Collocation is the combination of two or more verbs precisely, for example the word interested has to be combined with the word into form interested in. Interested in is the precise or appropriate combination. But, some students sometimes combine the word interested with the word with.  Whereas, interested with is not appropriate. This research discusses the inappropriateness of the diction of making lexcical collocation (type Verb + noun and type adjective + noun) in International Business students of Faculty of Economics and Business Universitas Jenderal Soedirman. This research uses qualitative descriptive method. The data were collected by using a collocation test in sentences and short paragraph. Analysis was conducted by counting the inapropriateness of collocation tested to the respondents. The result showed that frequency of inappropriateness of using lexical collocation type adjective + noun were higher than tye verb + noun. Interlingual was the factor influeced of using two types of  lexical collocation. The mother tongue’s influnce determined  their diction of making apprpriate lexical collocation.

Abstract

This study is a class action aims to improve students skills in nembang Durma in class VI using props saron. This research was conducted with 2 cycles. Each cycle consists of four phases: planning, action, observation, and reflection. Data collection techniques in this study is documentation, observations, and tests. Technical analysis of the data used to determine the advantages and disadvantages in the performance of teachers and students during the learning process. The subjects of this study are six graders State Kedungmutih Wedung District of Demak district. Implementation for two months from August to September 2015. The results of this classroom action research shows that there is significant increase in the ability of students. The results mean nembang test students on the initial conditions 37.5 and 37.5% level of completeness. In the first cycle the average value of 71.5 completeness rate of 50%. In the second cycle mean value 77.0 and 83.3% level of completeness. Based on the above, it can be concluded that by using props saron in sound art learning Java, can improve students skills in nembang Durma Laras Slendro.

Abstract

The process of addition is part of a study of the morphology, namely the study of the shape of the rules of the language. The addition process is the process of formation of words from another entity which is a basic form. Java language dialect Banyumas has affixes, whether it be a prefix, suffix, and inserts a word-forming element. In this study, which became the object of study is the Java language dialect Banyumas by scrutinizing how the process of addition in Javanese dialect Banyumas and certainly aimed to describe the process of addition in Javanese dialect Banyumas. The method used in the data analysis method used in this study distributional-reflective and introspective method. From the analysis, the addition in Javanese dialect Banyumas includes the process of affixation, reduplication process, and the process of compounding. Affixation process is divided into four kinds, namely prefiksasi process, infiksasi, sufiksasi, and konfiksasi. The process of compounding the Java language dialect Banyumas in terms of basic shapes are combined distinguished syllabic merging and merging intact. Judging from the relationship schematically basic elements distinguished on a single identical compounding, compounding synthetic, semi-synthetic compounding. Judging from the level of relations between the forms is basically divided on equal compounding, compounding explained explained, and compounding that the merger serves to form adjectives, in this case can be distinguished according to the true meaning and figurative sense

Abstract

This research was conducted to describe the applying Total Physical Response through snake and ladder game for teaching English for children to kindergarten teachers in South Semarang District in academic year of 2014/2015 and to find out the result of applying Total Physical Response through game for teaching English for children. The data source of my study was the teachers of kindergarten in south Semarang District in academic year of 2014/2015 which consists of 30 kindergarten teachers. The instruments consist of vocabulary and free simple writing test. It means that the kindergarten teachers were taught first about vocabulary for kindergarten children and then they were asked to make simple writing sentence related to vocabularies have been learned. The learning process was based on Total Physical Response through snake and ladder game. This study is an action research. There were four steps in conducting an action research: Planning. Acting, Observing, and Reflecting. This action research was done in two cycles. The teaching of vocabulary and simple sentence through snake and ladder game contributes significantly to the achievement of kindergarten teachers’ improvement. Based on the result of the pre cycle, there were 30% participant who passed the indicator standard. After applying Total Physical Response through snake and ladder game on first cycle, there were 50% participants who passed indicator standard and on the second cycle, there were 86 % of improvements of mastering vocabulary and simple writing sentences. Based on this result, I could draw conclusion that applying Total Physical Response through snake and ladder game can improve the kindergarten teachers’ vocabulary and simple writing skill.

Abstract

Sebagai variasi bahasa, alih kode menjadi kondisi yang umum di masyarakat tutur tertentu. Fenomena ini biasanya memunculkan keadaan kedwibahasaan. Dwibahasawan setidaknya menguasai dua bahasa selain bahasa ibunya. Sebagai contoh, pelajar Indonesia berbicara bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa asing yang mereka pelajari di sekolah atau kampus. Akibatnya, ketika mereka berinteraksi dengan yang lainnya, mereka sering beralih kode satu dengan yang lain secara sengaja atau tidak. Sebagai proses menyampaikan pesan, alih kode muncul dalam karya tulis seperti artikel, tesis, buku teks, cerita pendek, puisi dan novel. Alih kode yang secara sistematis muncul di karya tulis diasumsikan dilakukan untuk memenuhi beberapa fungsi. Rangkaian fungsi tersebut diusulkan olehGumperz (1982) dan dilengkapi oleh Marasigan (1983). Fungsi-fungsi tersebut meliputiquotation, addressee specification, interjection, reiteration, message qualification, personilization v.s objectivizationdanfacility of expression.

Abstract

Batik adalah salah satu warisan nusantara yang unik, keunikan batik ditunjukkan dengan berbagai motif yang memiliki makna tersendiri. Bahasa sebagai subsistem dari kebudayaan berfungsi sebagai alat penyusun, penyimpan, penyampai, dan penunjuk kebudayaan. Dari bahasa yang digunakan seseorang tercermin kebudayaan pemikirnya, yang meliputi cara hidup dan cara berfikir yang dapat ditelusuri atau dilihat dari kosakata atau leksikon yang digunakan oleh masyarakat bahasa pendukung suatu kebudayaan. Penamaan merupakan simbolisasi dari adanya usaha manusia untuk mengenali dan memahami segala sesuatu yang kompleks dan beragam. Fakta lingual ini sekaligus menunjukkan bahwa dalam bahasa Jawa terdapat simpanan kekayaan leksikon yang dapat menjadi potret harmoni orang Jawa dengan lingkungannya. Sejalan dengan hal tersebut, perkembangan budaya juga mempengaruhi perkembangan leksikon atau istilah yang berhubungan dengan budaya tertentu. Leksikon muncul seiring dengan kebutuhan manusia untuk mengidentifikasi hasil budaya yang ada. Pemakaian leksikon terkait erat dengan berbagai macam hal yang ada dalam budaya masyarakat pengguna leksikon tersebut. Berkembangnya kebudayaan pada masyarakat tertentu dapat dilihat salah satunya dari perkembangan leksikon tentang budaya tersebut. Konsep penamaan dalam sistem teknologi perbatikan adalah suatu sistem tanda bahasa yang dapat dijabarkan dalam pola, konteks, dan interpretasi. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian deskriptif kualitatif yang menguak sistem pengetahuan teknologi perbatikan masyarakat Banyumas yang tercermin dalam satuan lingual bahasa Jawa.

Abstract

Students’ text books mostly contain the materials which do not show the local wisdom and also they do not include sufficient language elements as one of the keys in English learning. So that is why teachers have to innovate the teaching materials in order to combining the language skills, language elements, as well as the local wisdom. Adaptation is one of the most effective innovation which can be done by the teachers to integrate between teaching materials and students’ sociocultural condition. Hence, it is very important for them in adjusting the teaching material to the students’ internal and external factors. The teachers can choose certain local wisdom to be inserted in their teaching materials in this qualitative study such as tourism, culinary, and batik. Those materials can be downloaded from the internet and the usage should be considered to the language skills and students’ grade.

Abstract

This critical discourse analysis tried to reveal that a discourse is never neutral, even though it tends to become normative with repetitive use. In this case revealing the social problems and power relations exist in a part of advice issued by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Australia, and also the ideology represented, the intertextuality, and the connections between social and cultural structures that may exists become the aims of the analysis . The analysis using CDA proved that the advice issued by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Australia may means 1) there was an exercise of power from the authority to its citizens, 2) The ideology of terrorist threat which existed in parts of the text served as a black campaign for Indonesia, and 3) the discourse also challenged the Australian Identity especially for the Aborigine.
