Abstract

The increasing number of hotels has a significant impact on spatial development in the Yogyakarta Urban Area (YUA). The concentrated distribution of hotels in urban areas triggers spatial changes and encourages land conversion. On the other hand, the development of many hotels can put pressure on environmental resources. This study aims to analyze the spatial pattern of hotels in the YUA. Quantitative analysis techniques are used with primary and secondary data sources by collecting secondary data and conducting field observations. The approach used is a spatial-temporal approach by interpreting images and overlay techniques obtained multitemporally with a time span of 5 (five) years from 2018 to 2022. The population in this study includes all hotels in YUA, including starred and non-starred hotels. The analytical methods used are nearest-neighbor analysis (NNA) and Density Kernel. The results of this study indicate that the distribution pattern of hotels in YUA in 2018 & 2022 is clustered, and the direction of hotel development in the YUA is to the northeast or towards Depok District. It can be concluded that hotel distribution not only reflects tourism development but also contributes to spatial transformation by reorienting spatial functions and driving urban expansion.

Abstract

Information regarding the characteristics and variability of climate in Bali Island remains relatively limited, despite its importance for supporting development planning, natural resource management, and disaster risk mitigation. This study aims to analyze the characteristics of rainfall, air temperature, and land surface temperature (LST) in Bali Island during the period 2000–2022 using remote sensing data. The datasets employed include CHIRPS for rainfall, ERA5-Land for air temperature, and MODIS MOD11A2 V6.1 for land surface temperature. Spatial and temporal analyses were conducted to identify climate patterns, variability, and the relationships among climate variables. The results show that the highest average rainfall occurred in January, reaching 318.38 mm/month, with an average of 19 rainy days per month, while rainfall intensity tended to be higher in May and October, corresponding to the transitional seasons. The average air temperature exhibited two annual peaks, occurring in April (24.77°C) and November (24.99°C), while the lowest temperature was recorded in August (23.38°C). Meanwhile, the highest average land surface temperature was observed in 2015 (28.7°C), whereas the lowest was recorded in 2022 (25.8°C). Spatially, the mountainous regions of central and northern Bali generally experienced higher rainfall and lower temperatures than other areas. The findings demonstrate that remote sensing data are effective for identifying regional climate characteristics and variability. The results are expected to provide valuable information for climate-based development planning, natural resource management, and climate change adaptation efforts in Bali Island.

Abstract

Motorcycle theft cases in Palu City often occur in densely populated areas, such as shopping centers, parking areas, residential areas, and boarding houses. This problem is exacerbated by weak supervision in vulnerable areas and the minimal use of GIS with cluster analysis. This study aims to map areas prone to motor vehicle theft (curanmor) in Palu City through the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The methods used include Kernel Density analysis to identify the density of motorcycle theft incidents, cluster analysis to group areas based on vulnerability levels, and overlay techniques are used to obtain a more accurate and informative map of areas prone to motorcycle theft in Palu City. The results of the analysis divide areas into three levels of vulnerability, namely low (score 1–3), medium (score 4–6), and high (score 7–9). Areas with a very high level of vulnerability (red zone) are concentrated in the city center, namely the districts of West Palu, East Palu, South Palu, and parts of Tatanga District. The moderate-risk zone (yellow zone) is located in the transitional area, including parts of North Palu and Mantikulore Districts. The safe zone (green zone) covers outlying areas such as Tawaeli and Ulujadi Districts, and most of Mantikulore. The research findings can serve as a reference for the police and local government in developing strategies for preventing and controlling crime in Palu City.

Abstract

Urbanization and population growth have accelerated urban spatial transformation, notably through the expansion of modern retail developments into residential neighborhoods. Beyond its economic significance, the proliferation of modern retail represents a process of urban spatial reorganization, involving changes in spatial functions and structures that do not necessarily conform to established planning frameworks. This study aims to analyze the spatial distribution patterns of modern retail in Mataram City and evaluate its impact on the structure of residential areas. The research employs a quantitative approach with an emphasis on Geographic Information System (GIS)-based spatial analysis. Primary data, consisting of the coordinates of modern retail locations, were collected through field surveys, while secondary data included base maps and demographic information. Data analysis utilized techniques such as Kernel Density Estimation, Hot Spot Analysis (Getis-Ord Gi)*, Network Analysis, and Overlay to assess compliance with the Regional Spatial Plan (RTRW) document. The analysis reveals that the distribution of modern retail in Mataram City shows a concentrated pattern along main roads. This pattern creates concentrated areas within the central city sub-districts, with a tendency for development to expand southward. Most residential areas are within the optimal service range (radius <500 meters), indicating functional efficiency. Although this expansion drives spatial reorganization, the majority of modern retail locations align with commercial zoning in the Regional Spatial Panning Document (RTRW), suggesting a harmony between the growth of the retail sector and formal urban planning.

Abstract

ENSO (El Nino-Southern Oscillation) and IOD (Indian Ocean Dipole) significantly impact weather variability in tropical regions, including Indonesia, which can influence rainfall patterns and potentially lead to hydrometeorological disasters. This study analyzes the influence of ENSO and IOD phenomena on rainfall patterns in West Sumatra through a quantitative approach. The research utilizes rainfall data from three meteorological stations in West Sumatra spanning 30 years (1994-2023). The study employs correlation analysis to examine the relationship between ENSO (using NINO 3.4 index) and IOD with rainfall patterns across different seasons. Results indicate that ENSO and IOD impacts vary significantly by season, with the strongest correlations observed during the SON (September-October-November) period. During this period, ENSO showed strong negative correlations (r = -0.59 to -0.62) at Minangkabau and Teluk Bayur stations, while IOD demonstrated strong positive correlations (r = 0.61 to 0.63). The research findings contribute to understanding climate variability in West Sumatra and can support local climate adaptation strategies and disaster mitigation planning

Abstract

This study focuses on analyzing and mapping physical fire vulnerability in densely populated areas to reduce risk exposures caused by close-knit building patterns and the lack of portable fire extinguishers. The study employed a descriptive quantitative (scoring) method utilizing eight parameters: building density, building material, building age, availability of Light Fire Extinguishers (APAR), absolute distance to the fire station, road conditions, road width, and response time. Data were collected through documentation, questionnaires, and secondary data. The analytical techniques used include scoring, class classification, Normalized Difference Built-Up Index (NDBI), overlay, buffer distance analysis, and descriptive analysis. The sample involved 64 Neighborhood Units (RTs) across 6 Community Units (RWs): 12 RTs in RW 03, 15 RTs in RW 06, 4 RTs in RW 013, 9 RTs in RW 014, 10 RTs in RW 015, and 14 RTs in RW 016. The research findings indicate that the physical vulnerability level to settlement fire disasters across the 64 RTs in 6 RWs is distributed into low vulnerability (RW 03, RW 013, RW 016) at 50% and medium vulnerability (RW 06, RW 014, RW 015) at 50%. The physical vulnerability area of each RW is: RW 03 (4.51 ha), RW 06 (6.17 ha), RW 013 (0.85 ha), RW 014 (2.15 ha), RW 015 (2.79 ha), and RW 016 (2.67 ha). The study area is dominated by dense settlements. All sampled buildings are permanent structures with an age of more than 20 years. There are 18 APAR units available across categories of 'sufficiently complete' and 'incomplete'. Furthermore, the location is close to the fire station (< 2.5 km); road widths vary between > 6 m and < 4 m; road conditions consist of asphalt and concrete; and the fire department's response time from Jatinegara Sub-district, Bukit Duri Urban Village, and Rawajati Urban Village is < 15 minutes, which is considered successful.

Abstract

Groundwater potential studies are crucial for sustainable water management because groundwater quality tends to be superior and more widely utilized by the community compared to surface water. This high dependency potentially triggers an imbalance between domestic water availability and demand. This study aims to map flow patterns, calculate availability potential, evaluate domestic demand, and test the groundwater quality index in Batujajar Timur, West Bandung Regency. The methods used in this research include field measurements of water table levels, geoelectrical surveys using the VES method, pumping tests using the Shallow Dug Well Recovery Test (Slug Test) method, and water quality index testing using a modified GWQI method. Batujajar Timur has a groundwater flow pattern that directs from the hilly topography toward the lowlands, specifically from east to west. This aligns with the lithology forming the area, where tuffaceous breccia rocks form irregular ridges in the northern and eastern parts. The static groundwater availability potential at the study site was determined to be 5,226,543,302.41 liters/year, with a hydraulic conductivity value of 2.24 m/day, classified as fine sand. The dynamic groundwater availability potential was found to be 293,192,067.24 liters/year. The domestic demand of the population at the research location is 694,317,568.8 liters/year. The physical quality of groundwater in residents' wells shows values exceeding the quality standards, which is further evidenced by GWQI calculation results at two well points indicating a very poor water quality class.

Abstract

The suitability of spatial patterns in the coastal area of Demak Regency needs to be examined, as this area faces significant environmental pressures, particularly from coastal erosion, shoreline change, tidal flooding, and land subsidence. These conditions may lead to inconsistencies between the spatial pattern directives in the Regional Spatial Plan (RTRW) and the actual land use conditions on the ground. This study aims to analyze the suitability of spatial patterns in the coastal area of Demak Regency in relation to the RTRW directives stipulated in regional regulations, and to identify spatial patterns of land-use incompatibility. This research integrates OpenStreetMap (OSM) data, the Demak Regency RTRW map, administrative boundaries, and shoreline data using a Geographic Information System (GIS) approach. The analysis was conducted using overlay intersection to compare planned spatial functions and actual land use, supported by the Chi-Square test, the Kappa coefficient, Moran’s I, and Local Indicators of Spatial Association (LISA). The results show that the direct suitability between RTRW and actual land use is only 5.8%. The Kappa value of 0.0361 indicates a very low level of spatial agreement between the spatial plan and actual conditions. The Chi-Square test yielded χ² = 42,073.37 (p < 0.001), indicating a significant relationship between RTRW categories and actual land use, although the level of suitability remains low. Spatial autocorrelation analysis produced a Moran’s I value of 0.024 with p < 0.01, indicating a very weak but statistically significant positive spatial autocorrelation. The LISA results identified local clusters of incompatibility in protected areas, settlements, and coastal aquaculture zones. These findings indicate that the implementation of the Demak Regency RTRW faces spatial gaps caused by coastal environmental pressures and socio-economic dynamics. Therefore, spatial planning needs to be updated through a more adaptive approach that responds to coastal environmental changes.

Rapid urban development in Sukarame Village has the potential to reduce the environment’s capacity to provide water, while water demand continues to increase due to population growth. This study aims to analyze water carrying capacity, water demand capacity, the relationship between water availability and water demand, and their implications for spatial planning in Sukarame Village, Bandar Lampung City. A descriptive quantitative approach combined with spatial analysis using a 150 × 150 m grid system was employed in this study. Water carrying capacity was assessed using the Environmental Services Index (ESI) for Water Provision, while water demand capacity was estimated by calculating domestic water demand based on population distribution. The results indicate that the total water availability in Sukarame Village is 921,212.28 m³/year, whereas domestic water demand reaches 1,934,602.31 m³/year, resulting in a water deficit of 1,013,390.03 m³/year. These findings indicate that the existing water carrying capacity is insufficient to meet the community's water demand, demonstrating that the balance between water carrying capacity and water demand capacity has been exceeded. The water deficit is primarily influenced by the dominance of built-up areas, which reduces groundwater recharge areas and increases pressure on water resources. The findings suggest that assessments of water carrying capacity and water demand capacity can serve as an important basis for spatial planning policies, particularly in controlling land-use conversion, protecting groundwater recharge areas, and increasing green open spaces to support the sustainable management of water resources.

Abstract

Flooding is one of the most frequent hydrometeorological disasters in Indonesia, causing significant damage, with its frequency continuing to increase due to climate change and land-use alterations. This condition necessitates a rapid and accurate flood monitoring system. At present, two commonly used methods for flood mapping are thresholding and machine learning. This study aims to compare the performance of flood mapping methods based on SAR imagery using classical thresholding approaches and modern machine learning techniques. The thresholding method used is the Otsu thresholding method, whilst the machine learning approach utilises the XGBoost and LightGBM algorithms. The analysis results show that thresholding methods achieve higher accuracy in identifying flooded areas compared to machine learning methods in this case study. The overall accuracy of the Otsu method is 0.995. Meanwhile, the overall accuracy values of the XGBoost and LightGBM machine learning methods are 0.975 and 0.970, respectively. These findings indicate that thresholding approaches remain relevant and effective for flood mapping in Indonesia. However, the development of machine learning methods can also be a good alternative approach to flood mapping.
