<![CDATA[The purpose of this study is to describe students’ interaction in asynchronous blended learning as a part of community of inquiry activities. This research is self-observational study in ICT-based course for pre-service English teachers. There were 91 students who participated in blended learning activities. Data were obtained from offline teaching journals and online activities in Google Classroom Platform. The data were analyzed by using community of inquiry framework to describe social, cognitive presence and teaching presence. The findings showed that offline activities provided more social presence, cognitive presence and teaching presence. Meanwhile, online activities only provided teaching presence and cognitive presence without strong social presence. The implication of this research is students attend the online learning as a part of required instruction in the course only, not because of self-awareness of building knowledge. <![CDATA[The aim of this study is to explore the students’ perceptions of using video recording to improve speaking accuracy and fluency of thirty-five pre-service teacher at University of Muhammadiyah Prof. Dr. Hamka Jakarta. This study employed mixed method to analyze the data. A pre-test and post-test were obtained as the instruments and analyzed quantitatively by using paired t-test. It is used to determine the students’ speaking ability before and after implementing video recording in speaking class. In qualitative method acquired a structured interview to gain their perceptions on using video recording. The results revealed a significant increase in students' speaking abilities, particularly in their accuracy and fluency. The students also show a good perception in the use of video recording in speaking classes. They stated that video recording is an interesting thing that can be used to train their speaking skills. Therefore, it is suggested that video recording might be an alternative medium for teachers or lecturers in teaching speaking. <![CDATA[The aim of this research is to analyze on the sentence construction in English textbook and students’ essay narrative text writing. This research used qualitative methods. The population of this research which consisted of 398 students and then, 36 students from class XI MIA 4 were selected as the sample. The data were collected using students’ essay and seventh texts in English textbook to be analyzed. The researcher analyzed about the sentence construction in all of the texts in English textbook and in students’ essay. Sentence constructions that will be analyzed by the researcher are the five of grammatical tenses. The tenses are simple past tense, past continuous tense, past perfect continuous tense, past perfect tense, and past future tense. After the researcher had analyzed and calculated, the result showed that the total percentage of English textbook and in students’ essay have the same percentage that is 90%. It means that, the students’ can apply sentence construction in their writing and sentence construction in seventh texts in English textbook is better. <![CDATA[This study aimed to describe the implementation of video dubbing project and to find out the enhancement of the students’ speaking skill after the implementation of video dubbing project in teaching speaking of fourth semester students UNRIKA in academic year 2018-2019. Action research procedures (including planning, action, observation, reflection) were used to study the progress and subject outcomes. The study was conducted in two cycles which was held from February to July 2019. The researcher was assisted by another lecturer to observe and assist the implementation of video dubbing project. Data were collected through observer sheet and test. Data obtained from cycle 1 were analysed and used for revision and improvement in cycle 2. Then, data obtained from cycle 2 were presented as the outcomes of the project. The test result revealed that students speaking skill was improved. The improvement was particularly seen in pronunciation. The mean score of the students in pre-test was 67.02. After the implementation of the project on cycle 1, the students mean score was 83.63 and on cycle 2 was 90.61. During the implementation, students were motivated, enthusiastic, active, and eager to work together and show positive attitude towards the language learning. <![CDATA[One of the required tasks of being an English lecturer in Indonesia is to perform assessment and evaluation after teaching in a one-semester course. The learning of English essay writing seems to be important for all majors. After collecting actual data from Indonesian EFL students taking an English essay writing course in the even semester of 2015/2016 and 2016/2017, it was found that the students had a certain pattern of interest to which genre they might prefer to write in their final examination. A convenient sampling technique was applied in this research. In terms of data, 71 students enrolled in the course in 2015/2016 (Group 1) and 75 students enrolled in the 2016/2017 (Group 2) academic year. The highest preferred genre for Group 1 was comparison-contrast with 28% and Descriptive for Group 2 with 33%. Meanwhile, the lowest preferred genre for Group 1 was Argumentative with 11% and Narrative for Group 2 with 9%. By looking at these percentages, a few pedagogical reflective evaluations can be made. Hopefully, one question that may be raised for all English teachers and lecturers in Indonesia: “Have we considered EFL students’ interests before evaluating their overall performance on our essay writing course?" <![CDATA[This research is aimed to investigate the using and the meaning of figurative language in the poems. The sample of this research were ten poems from the two authors separated in 2 century, they are Shakespeare and Wordsworth. This research applied descriptive qualitative method and the objective approach to analyzed the data. The figurative language was analyzed based on Wren and Martin’s theory and also the implied meaning of each figurative language. The figurative language found were presented in the form of table. From the data analysis, it was found all the figurative language in the five poems by Shakespeare except Euphemism and Irony. In Wordsworth’ poems, all the figurative languages were found except Synecdoche and Irony. From the figurative language found and the background of the authors, it was concluded that Shakespeare is a Poetic person, he usually used some beautiful words to describe something. While, Wordsworth is a Romantic person, he usually told about love, emotion and even feeling sadness always related to the lost love. <![CDATA[To propose the idea of designing national English curriculum for elementary school in Indonesia, a literature review as a research methodology in this study was conducted to reveal the urgency of teaching English to young learners, based on a number of previous studies on this issue, as the preparation for the future generation facing the era of globalization. The fact that English is the language of world trade and technology has benefit the countries in which English is taught since Elementary level with their national standardized curriculum, such as Singapore, Malaysia, and Brunei to grow rapidly. Contrast to their conditions, In Indonesia, although there are many positive responses from the society about introducing English since elementary school, based on National Curriculum 2013, the government has just allowed schools to teach English since junior high school. As a result, there are great numbers of elementary schools start teaching English to their students without necessarily developing proper curriculum or even having qualified teachers. Therefore, providing national English curriculum for elementary school is strongly required to give teachers and schools clear guideline and proper standard to teach English at early stage. It is expected that proper and nationally standardized English curriculum will help teachers and schools to teach English according to the student needs and capacity and build strong foundation for learning English on the next stage. <![CDATA[This research is entitled “Inclusion Strategies Used by The United States Newspapers Published in COCA in Representing Islam”. The data of this research are sentences containing inclusion strategies in the news related to Islam, and those news are taken from the United States newspapers published in Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA). The objectives of this research are to describe and analyze the inclusion strategies used by the United States newspapers published in COCA in representing Islam. The analysis of this research was done by using qualitative and descriptive research methods proposed by Nassaji (2015). This study uses the theory of inclusion strategies proposed by Van Leeuwen (2008). This study shows that the use of inclusion strategies such as differentiation-indifferentiation, nomination-identification, abstraction-objectivation, determination-indetermination, and association-dissociation are commonly used by US newspapers in representing Islam as a social actor in the news. The use of inclusion strategies mostly appear in negative news relating to Islam, and this causes Islam as a social actor often poorly represented in the media. <![CDATA[Common problems faced by English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers in Indonesia especially in Junior high school level are developing students’ cognitive, affective, and psychomotor ability. Although there are supporting factors such as qualified teachers, appropriate basic teaching media, and supporting school environment, yet the issues have not been resolved. Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CIRC) were applied in this study at one class of Al Qudwah Islamic Junior High School Depok to overcome some issues faced by the English teacher at the 8th grade. An action research was conducted to improve students comprehension in reading and writing. Integrative teaching media has been implemented as part of the efforts. Promising results was shown as the students were enthusiastic to gain information and critically discuss trending issues including the environment changes and social media. Religious values explored from the texts provided by the institution and selected by the students were reported in this study. <![CDATA[The present paper develops an English reading book that embeds local values of West Kalimantan Province of Indonesia, represented by plants used by local people for medication. The book will help language learners in two ways. First, it helps the learners with familiar information which they have found in their daily lives. Second, this book tries to preserve the local culture among millennial students who are immensely exposed to western lifestyles. ADDIE model of material development was adopted in the paper. The present paper only discusses the first three stages of the model. 40 participants of a university in West Kalimantan Province were invited to take part in the need analysis stage. They were requested to voluntarily fill questionnaires which included their personal information, reading habit, and familiarity towards West Kalimantan medicinal plants. The results of the questionnaires assisted the researchers to visualise the needs of the learners before the book was actually designed. It helped us set the book content, format, and level of difficulty. On top of that, the results informed the researchers on parts of the questionnaires that should be improved and items that should be excluded.
