Abstract

Sugar was one of the important trade commodities during the Dutch occupation. The abundant production of sugar disproportionated to the availability of freight transportation. Its consequences, the sugar company was hampered by both the low volumes and and the slow journey time of transported goods. As a result, the development of modes of transport was the solution needed. It would provide the solution based on the maximum payload and highest average speeds. The purpose of this study is to describe the role of railways in transporting sugar industry to the port in the Cirebon Residency. The research method used in the study is descriptive analysis. Research data were derived from library study, and field observations. The results of the study have shown that the railway line in Cirebon Residency was actually a part of the Semarang - Cirebon railway line built by NV. SCS. The disused railroad indicate clearly that there was an intersection to the sugar company from the nearest train station. It concluded that the railway construction in Cirebon was initially intended as the sugar transportation.

Abstract

Despite a taboo subject amongst society, the matters related to sexuality are always interesting to study. In the early twentieth century, texts on sexuality were quite popular and had even been printed in the form of books that were sold in the book stalls. One of those was Serat Kawruh Sanggama. The purpose of this study was to analyze the form, the function, and the meaning of the politics of the body in the Serat Kawruh Sanggama. The method used in the research was the qualitative-interpretative data analysis combined with the approach of the Politics of the Body. The results of the study have shown that Serat Kawruh Sanggama was written in Kediri and then disseminated by the publisher of the Boekhandel Tan Khoen Swie Kediri. The elements of the Politics of the Body revealed in the text are in the form of narratives related to the procedures or rules of sexual intercourse. It is evident that the elements of the Politics of the Body found on the text served as an instrument of subjugating, controlling, and dominating the female body. This text can be interpreted as an attempt by men to understand the mystery of the female body. However, on the other hand, the text can also be interpreted as an attempt by men to understand the mystery of the female body. In addition, it also represented as a woman's power that encourages men to understand the ins and outs of the female body.

Abstract

The research aims to reveal how the power discourse works through Siraman and Ngalungsur Geni ceremonies. The power discourse can be traced through the relationship between traditional leaders (kuncen and ancestors) and the people of Dangiang Village. The study uses descriptive explanatory methods and interpretative qualitative data analysis techniques. The researcher first raises the phenomenon to be interpreted with Foucault's theory of positive and non-repressive constructed power. The data used are the results of in-depth interviews with informants, observations during the ceremonies, photos, and literature study. The research reveals that power during Siraman and Ngalungsur Geni ceremonies has been constructed dynamically, positively, and unrepressively. The power centered on traditional leader ‘kuncen’ is even distributed to all citizens participating in the ceremonies. The distribution of power is reflected when all ceremony participants can feel both the blessings of the prayers offered by the ‘kuncen’ and the water used for washing the heirlooms belonging to the ancestors of Dangiang Village.

Abstract

The research is not only aimed at uncovering the spatial layout of Galuh Pakwan as the last capital of Galuh Kingdom, but also at exploring how well the relationship between the urban spatial patterns and the local values as depicted in the traditional historiography. Beside having the historical methods as the main feature to produce a comprehensive study result, the study also uses the urban planning theory, as well as the descriptive qualitative methods. The historical sources related to the history of the Galuh Pakuan are very limited. As a result, the in-depth interviews with the resource persons are expected to be appropriate as the observation material for historical analysis. Based on the facts found in the field, the Galuh Pakwan as the capital of the kingdom originated from a Kabuyutan. During the reign of Niskalawastu Kancana, Kabuyutan served as a political center while maintaining its original function as Kabuyutan. As the time passed, the Galuh Pakwan was transformed into a city whose spatial layout represented and implemented the Sundanese cosmological concept. The Galuh Pakwan was formed by a continuous radial-concentric pattern, as a description of Sundanese cosmology in the ancient Sundanese manuscript.

Abstract

The scout movement rose to fame in the afdeling of Batipuh X and Priaman in the early 20th century. Abstract

The study aims to reveal the history of the formation of the North Luwu District based on the perspective of the actors who were directly involved in the formation process. This research, which uses the historical method, shows the results of the research that the efforts to form the North Luwu District have been pursued for a long time. The effort, which had been started since 1959, was re-submitted in 1966, and finally in 1999 the North Luwu District was successfully formed. The formation of North Luwu District was the result of support from the North Luwu communities which consisted of various elements, such as elements of students who were members of the North Luwu Student Communication Forum, elements of societies, and even elements of the government. The process of formation the North Luwu District in 1999 proceeded rapidly because of political lobbying approached by Ryass Rasyid towards Director General for PUOD Lutfi A. Mutty. The main reasons behind the formation of the North Luwu District was not only due to the considerations of decentralization, the democratization and the good governance, as well as the economic calculations but also because of the interests of the actors behind it.

Abstract

The fishermen communities in South Lampung Regency were once mostly the Javanese who migrated to settle in Lampung in various ways. One of those was through the transmigration program since the colonial era. It was one rewarding way in which many of those have migrated since the era. In addition to doing their activities as the fishermen, they have also carried on their cultural activities as a part of their fishermen life community, that is, Ruwat Laut. After being carried out for years, Ruwat Laut was renamed Syukuran Laut. The name change is interesting for a research. The study was conducted by using a descriptive method with qualitative approach. The studies reveal that the change name was due to lack of funding and perceptual difference between customs of Java and customs of Lampung. Syukuran Laut is carried out without those traditions that once prevented Ruwat Laut, namely buffalo head offering, puppet show, and various types of activities with substantial funds.

Abstract

This work was intended to draw the strategy of the floating net cage farmers (Keramba Jaring Apung, KJA) in the Lake Maninjau in West Sumatera to deal with the ‘tubo’, a mass death of fish as a result of poison-laced bait. To analyze and answer the research question, therefore the research employed the cultural ecology approach. The research also used the qualitative method with the data collection by literature study, interviews, and observations. The study revealed that the farmers accepted the ‘tubo’ inevitably as a natural fact. As the consequence of it, they couldn’t help but adapted in order to survive economically. The adaptation process is based on their understanding of the environment, the ‘tubo’, the existing technology, and their religious values. They were able to adapt to natural and technological changes because of the ecological and cultural approaches they applied. As a result, they were able to survive
