Abstract

Many articles have been published on ink analysis to assist Forensic Document Examiner (FDE) in examining questioned documents. Ink analysis encountered about 45% of ballpoint and 24% of gel pen in forensic cases. Typically, ink samples found on the documents are limited to small quantities, requiring non-destructive techniques to preserve the evidence. Previous studies on ink analysis cover about 80% of spectroscopy techniques, including the Attenuated Total Reflectance Fourier Transform Infrared (ATR-FTIR). FDE prefers ATR-FTIR to retain the legibility of evidence since ATR-FTIR is known as non-destructive, fast, reliable, and precise instrumentation. Various modifications and developments to this technique have been published. Therefore, this work reviews the trend of analysis performed on samples of the document and evaluates the current approaches to the capacity of using ATR-FTIR on such samples. Remarks on the comparison studies are also included.

Abstract

The sorption mechanism of hexavalent chromium sorption on eucalyptus barks was evaluated as a function of solution pH for different adsorbent dosages, surface coverage, and the amount of adsorbent. The chromium retention was evaluated based on the distribution coefficient (D), and this retention is attributed to  species, which is predominant between pH 1 and 6.5. The biosorption of Cr(VI) ions onto barks achieved at pH 2.0 in the highest sorbet conditions corresponding to [Cr(VI)] = 10–5 mol (V = 100 mL) is examined for various surface coverage. The surface complexes formed between chromate and eucalyptus barks were found to be > S (HCrO4) and > S (CrO4). Logarithmic stability for log K1–1 and the log K10 values of the complexes were measured and found to be -5.93 in acidic medium and -0.76 in alkaline medium, respectively. Pointed out that the adsorption of Cr(VI) on eucalyptus bark was greater than 90% in all cases, Cr(VI) recovery is strongly acidic dependent and shows maximum retention, for various sorbent amounts, at pH around 2, and this retention is attributed to  species, which is predominant between pH 1 and 6.5, the morphological surface of eucalyptus barks were examined by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) connected to a micro analyzer EDS.

Abstract

Metals accumulation in threatened sharks’ meat represents a global health issue. The objective of the current study was to measure the concentration of six metals (Li, Ti, Ni, Cd, As, and Pb) using ICP-MS in threatened sharks’ meat of Rhizoprionodon acutus, Squalus hemipinnis, and Sphyrna lewini from Binuangeun Fish Auction in Lebak, Banten, Indonesia. The results showed that the concentration of Ni, Li, Cd, and Pb was below the acceptable levels for food sources for human consumption, except for As concentration (more than 30 fold higher). This study showed high levels of Ti concentration in all threatened sharks' meat. Overall, this study shows that an accumulation of Ti in sharks' meat should be considered a risk to the health of seafood consumers.

Abstract

Bacicyclin is a cyclic hexapeptide with antibacterial activity against Enterococcus faecalis and Staphylococcus aureus with minimum inhibition concentration (MIC) values of 8 and 12 µM, respectively. Studies on a reversed sequence of bacicyclin were conducted to investigate how the reversed peptide sequence affects its biological properties. A reversed-bacicylin, cyclo-(Gly-Leu-Val-Ile-Ala-Phe), was successfully synthesized by constructing the linear precursor on 2-chlorotrityl chloride resin using a Fmoc-based strategy. The HATU/HOAt reagent was applied in all peptidic bond formations, and the desired linear hexapeptide (82% yield) was cleaved off the resin using a mixture of trifluoroacetic acid:dichloromethane (2:8). The linear peptide was cyclized using 1-[bis(dimethylamino)methylene]-1H-1,2,3-triazolo[4,5-b]pyridinium-3-oxidehexa-fluorophosphate (HATU) as a coupling agent and diisopropylethylamine (DIPEA) as the base in a very dilute solution (0.001 M) in dichloromethane, then purified by octadecyl silica gel (ODS) column chromatography to obtain the reversed-bacicyclin (43.7% yield). The purity of the cyclic product was analyzed using analytical RP-HPLC (tR = 20.01 min), and characterized by HR-TOF-MS, 1H-NMR, and 13C-NMR. The biological activity of the reversed-bacicyclin is much lower compared to bacicyclin, indicating that the amino acid sequence of the cyclopeptide dictates the antibacterial activity. This finding gives additional information on the relationship between peptide sequence and biological properties.

Abstract

Nanotechnology explores nanoscale materials that can be used in a wide range of industries such as biotechnology, cosmetics, drug delivery, nanomedicine, and biosensors. Nanoparticles in diverse shapes and sizes can be prepared through physical, chemical, and biological methods. The employment of reducing agents, which will change their form, size range, level of stability, and interaction, is a crucial part thus employing a biological approach is necessary. Chemically generated metal oxide nanoparticles raise considerable issues owing to the usage of hazardous and poisonous chemicals, as well as the potential for conservational impairment. In contrast, the production of silver nanoparticles using the principal method of green synthesis has found a special place in research that is considered more environmentally approachable requiring the use to produce non-toxic nanomaterials. Plants and polymer materials have received a lot of interest in the preparation of nanoparticles since they are renewable and affordable. In this review, we present a comprehensive overview of more ecologically friendly synthesis techniques that use plant extracts to make silver nanoparticles and their application as antibacterial agents, as well as toxicity features based on the shape, size range, and phytochemical mechanism of plants.
