Abstract

AbstractCigarette smoke contains Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS). ROS when it is over-produced causes  oxidative stress. Oxidative stress is related to the synthesis of pro-in-flamatory cytokines  which encourage inflammation which is characterized by the increase in proinflammatory cytokines. The purpose of this study was to determine the description of serum interleukin-6 levels in active smokers. The research sample was 11 active smokers in the Bali Regional Police who were selected using a non- probability sampling technique using purposive sampling. Measurement of serum interleukin-6 levels was performed using the ELISA method. The results showed that serum interleukin-6 levels increased in all age groups and most were found at the age of 35-44 years (36.3%), with normal and obese BMI each 45.5%, in white cigarette smokers with filters (72.7%), moderate smoking intensity (63.6%), with smoking duration of 11-15 years (36.4%). The conclusion in this study is that most active smokers have increased serum interleukin-6 levels. Keywords: active smokers, serum, interleukin-6

Abstract

Background. Peat soil is a type of soil that is formed from the accumulation of half-decayed plant debris. High organic matter content and some minerals with a thickness of approximately 50 cm. The high content of organic matter in peat soils is thought to be one of the factors that play an important role in supporting the process of adaptation of functional microbes. This is because the availability of organic materials needed by functional microbes for growth and metabolism is met.Method. The sampling method used is purposive sampling. Peat water samples were taken in a composite manner from 2 locations with 10 points on the right and 10 points on the creek flow with a distance of about 10 meters at each point with a trench flow length of 100 meters. Samples were taken in the morning, afternoon, and evening from each point then the inspection was carried out at the Polytechnic Laboratory of the Ministry of Health Pontianak.Results. The distribution of Enterobacter in peat soil water samples taken in the morning, afternoon, the evening is still high with based on identification obtained an average percentage of bacteria Klebsiella Pneumonia 100%, Shigella Dysentery 100%, Proteus Vulgaris 80%, Escherichia Coli 70% and Salmonella 70% and Salmonella Typhi 20%. The coagulation test to determine the type or species of a bacterium from the Enterobacter group is carried out with an antisera test.Concl. There is a relationship between morning water samples with afternoon and evening. Based on the Kendall Tau test, the value of the p-value smaller than α (0.05) is 0.009.

Abstract

Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a disease caused by metabolic disorders in the pancreas, which is characterized by an increased glucose levels or hyperglycemia due to decreased insulin levels from the pancreas. In animal research, DM is often caused by administration of diabetogenic agents. Streptozotocin works by forming free radicals that can damage the pancreatic beta cells; therefore, insulin production can be disrupted. This study aims to determine the glucose level on Wistar Rats (Rattus norvegicus) before and after a single dose streptozotocin-induced. This study was conducted experimentally with a posttest-interpretation design with a control group design. The result demonstrated that the average blood glucose level before the induction of streptozotocin was 92,63 (SD 10,487) mg/dL, after being induced by streptozotocin was 235,56 (SD 164,929) mg/dL with a difference of 142,938 (SD 160,543) mg/dL. In this study, it can be concluded that the induction of a single dose of streptozotocin has an effect on increasing blood glucose levels on Wistar Rats (Rattus norvegicus).
