Abstract

Abstract Background: Both types of cigarettes (traditional and electronic) have negative health effects, and public interest remains high. Based on several studies, antioxidants are known to counteract the effects of ROS caused by cigarettes. One of them is frangipani (Plumeria alba), which has phenols and flavonoids.Objective: To find out the antioxidant effects of frangipani flower extract on test animals exposed to cigarette and vape smoke.Methods: An experimental method with a randomized post-test control group design was used in this study. The sample consists of healthy male Wistar rats divided into five sample groups, which received intervention for a 3-week duration. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA followed by post hoc tests.Results: This study found that both cigarettes and vaping lowered SOD levels (P1 and P2 groups; 3.381 and 4.462 ng/mL). Meanwhile, the groups with frangipani flower extract, who were exposed to cigarettes and vaping, had a higher level of SOD (P3 and P4; 6.999 and 8.681 ng/mL).Conclusions: The administration of frangipani flower extract containing antioxidants has a positive effect on SOD levels.

Abstract

Background: Obesity is a complex metabolic disorder associated with various health risks, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and hepatic steatosis. Given the limitations of current pharmacological treatments, there is increasing interest in natural products with anti-obesity potential, such as jongi (Dillenia indica). Objective: This study evaluated the effects of Dillenia indica leaf extract in rats fed a high-fat diet. Methods: Thirty male Wistar rats were divided into five groups: standard diet, high-fat diet, and three others receiving high-fat diets (HFD) supplemented with either 500 mg/kg or 750 mg/kg of Dillenia indica extract, or 10 mg/kg of orlistat. HFD was administered to the corresponding groups for 28 days, followed by oral treatment for 14 days. Parameters measured included body weight, liver weight, lipid profiles, and adipocyte area. Results: The group treated with 750 mg/kg of Dillenia indica showed numerically lower liver weight, total cholesterol, LDL, and triglyceride levels compared with the HFD group. However, these differences were not statistically significant. Both Dillenia indica treatment groups showed significantly lower mean adipocyte areas than the HFD group (p < 0.05), with the lowest mean area observed at 750 mg/kg BW. Conclusions: Dillenia indica leaf extract at a dose of 750 mg/kg BW significantly reduced adipocyte area in HFD-fed rats. However, its effects on body weight, liver weight, and lipid profiles were not statistically significant. Further long-term studies with a broader range of doses are required.

Abstract

Background: Hypercholesterolemia promotes aortic wall thickening and increases cardiovascular risk. Although Syzygium polyanthum (bay leaves) has antioxidant and hypocholesterolemic properties, evidence comparing crushed and non-crushed decoctions remains limited. Objective: This study aimed to compare the effects of crushed and non-crushed bay leaf decoctions on aortic wall thickness in hypercholesterolemic Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus). Methods: A randomized post-test only control group study was conducted using 40 male Wistar rats assigned to eight groups. Bay leaf decoctions (crushed or non-crushed; 0.52%, 0.72%, and 0.92%) were administered orally for 14 days. Aortic wall thickness was assessed histologically and analyzed using the Kruskal–Wallis and Dunn's tests. Results: A significant difference in aortic wall thickness was observed among the groups (p = 0.040). The lowest mean aortic wall thickness was observed in the 0.92% crushed bay leaf decoction group (92.00 ± 29.20 μm), which was lower than that of the hypercholesterolemic control group (188.00 ± 29.24 μm). Conclusions: Crushed bay leaf decoction, especially at 0.92%, more effectively reduced aortic wall thickness than the non-crushed preparation. Further studies are needed to confirm the underlying mechanisms.

Abstract

Background: Orthosiphon stamineus and Annona muricata are medicinal plants traditionally used for diabetes management because they contain bioactive compounds capable of inhibiting carbohydrate-hydrolyzing enzymes. Objective: This study investigated the phytochemical composition and in vitro α-amylase inhibitory activity of the ethanolic leaf fractions of O. stamineus and A. muricata, individually and in combination. Methods: Leaf powders were extracted by methanol maceration, followed by liquid–liquid partitioning using n-hexane and 96% ethanol to obtain the ethanolic fractions. Phytochemical screening and an in vitro experimental study of fractions to α-amylase inhibition assays were performed individually and in combinations, with acarbose as the positive control. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA followed by Tukey's HSD test (p < 0.05). Results: Both ethanolic fractions contained alkaloids, flavonoids, and tannins. O. stamineus showed the highest α-amylase inhibitory activity (64.67%), followed by A. muricata (26.98%) and the 2:1 combination (59.74%), whereas the 1:1 combination exhibited the lowest inhibition (12.68%). Significant differences were observed among all treatments (p < 0.05). Conclusions: O. stamineus demonstrated greater α-amylase inhibitory activity than A. muricata. Combining the two extracts did not improve α-amylase inhibition compared with O. stamineus alone under the experimental conditions evaluated.

Abstract

Background: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is characterized by elevated blood glucose levels resulting from decreased insulin secretion by pancreatic beta cells. Fasting blood glucose (FBG) measurement is commonly used to monitor DM, requiring patients to fast for a minimum of eight hours. Insufficient insulin production impairs glucose uptake into body tissues, leading to hyperglycemia. Chronic hyperglycemia subsequently stimulates the production of inflammatory cytokines, which promotes the hepatic synthesis of C-reactive protein (CRP).Objective: This study aims to determine the relation between FBG and CRP levels in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) at Mangusada Hospital.Method: An observational analytic study was conducted using purposive sampling, with a total sample of 25 T2DM patients.Result: The lowest FBG level was 126 mg/dL, while the highest was 319 mg/dL. The lowest CRP level was 0.2 mg/L, whereas the highest was 23.7 mg/L. High FBG and CRP levels were observed in 44% of respondents, while high FBG with normal CRP levels were found in 56%. The highest FBG (319 mg/dL) also exhibited the highest CRP level (23.7 mg/L) The non-parametric Spearman’s rank correlation revealed a significant association between FBG and CRP levels with p-value of 0.012 (<0.05) and r = 0.493 indicated a positive and moderate correlation.Conclusion: There is a positive, moderate correlation between FBG and CRP levels in T2DM patients at Mangusada Hospital. Abstract

Background: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic non-communicable disease characterized by prolonged hyperglycemia, which can increase salivary glucose levels and reduce salivary flow, thereby promoting bacterial growth and increasing the risk of oral infections. Objective: To describe fasting blood glucose levels, salivary bacterial counts, and the Gram-staining characteristics of salivary bacteria among patients with diabetes mellitus. Methods: This cross-sectional correlational study involved 32 diabetes mellitus patients selected using accidental sampling. Data were collected through questionnaires, fasting blood glucose measurement using POCT, salivary bacterial count using the TPC method, and Gram staining. Results: All participants (100%) had fasting blood glucose levels within the diabetic range (≥126 mg/dL), indicating persistent hyperglycemia. Likewise, all saliva samples showed high bacterial counts (>100,000 CFU/mL). Gram-positive bacteria were more predominant than Gram-negative bacteria, accounting for 55.2% and 44.8% of the bacterial isolates, respectively. Conclusions: Patients with diabetes mellitus exhibited persistent hyperglycemia, high salivary bacterial counts, and a predominance of Gram-positive bacteria. These findings provide baseline information on the salivary bacterial profile of patients with diabetes mellitus and emphasize the importance of maintaining glycemic control and oral hygiene as part of comprehensive diabetes care.

Abstract

Background: Infections caused by Candida albicans are increasingly prevalent, particularly among immunocompromised individuals, and are further complicated by rising resistance to synthetic antifungal agents such as azoles. This has led to growing interest in traditional medicinal plants as alternative antifungal sources. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the in vitro antifungal activity of single and combined extracts of Michelia alba and Impatiens balsamina against Candida albicans. Methods: Both plant extracts were obtained by ethanol maceration and phytochemically screened. Antifungal activity was evaluated using the disk diffusion method with 20 µL (20 mg/disc) of crude extract. Extract combinations (1:3, 1:1, and 3:1) were tested in triplicate, and data were analyzed using the Kruskal–Wallis and Mann–Whitney tests. Results: Impatiens balsamina extract showed the largest inhibition zone (10.72 mm), followed by the 3:1 combination (9.91 mm) and Michelia alba extract (7.83 mm). All extracts exhibited moderate antifungal activity, with significant differences among groups (p = 0.009). Conclusions: Both plant extracts, individually and in combination, demonstrated antifungal activity against Candida albicans, suggesting their potential as candidates for natural antifungal agents.

Abstract

Abstract Background: Lymphoma (Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin) is a malignancy of the lymphatic system, with global prevalence reaching 2.8% and mortality rates reaching 248,700 cases each year. Therefore, Chimeric Antigen Receptor-Modified T cell therapy (CAR-T) was developed as a new approach to improve survival rates in lymphoma patients. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of CAR-T cell therapy in lymphoma. Methods: PRISMA 2020 was used in the literature search and systematic review with the keywords "CAR-T Cell Therapy" and "Lymphoma". All statistical analyses were performed with R statistical software version 3.3 and MedCalc software version 22. A p-value ≤ 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: There were 16 studies involving 440 patients with lymphoma. The complete response rate was 62% (95% CI 55%-65%, I² = 40%). Meanwhile, cytokine release syndrome (CRS) occurred in 73% of cases (95% CI 49%-88%, I² = 80%). The overall Immune effector cell-associated neurotoxicity syndrome (ICANS) rate was 17% (95% CI 9%-30%, I² = 66%). There is no significant publication bias in all analyses (p-value>0.05). However, these results need to be interpreted with caution, considering the high heterogeneity in the pooled analysis results (I² > 50%).

Abstract

Background: Anemia remains a relevant nutritional concern among adolescent girls. Mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) is a practical anthropometric measurement that may be associated with hemoglobin concentration and may help identify adolescents with limited nutritional reserves. Objective: This study aimed to examine the association between MUAC length and hemoglobin concentration in adolescent girls at SMA N 1 Tegalalang, Gianyar Regency. Methods: This analytical observational study used a cross-sectional design. A total of 147 female students were recruited using consecutive sampling. MUAC was the independent variable, and hemoglobin concentration was the dependent variable. Hemoglobin was measured using a point-of-care testing device. Data were analyzed using ANCOVA in IBM SPSS Statistics version 27, with the control of age and menstrual duration. Results: Most participants had a MUAC of ≥23.5 cm (50.34%) and normal hemoglobin concentration (≥12 g/dL; 93.9%). After adjustment for age and menstrual duration, MUAC was significantly associated with hemoglobin concentration (F = 5.257, p = 0.024, partial η² = 0.047). Conclusions: A significant association was observed between MUAC and hemoglobin concentration among female adolescents. MUAC may be considered a practical anthropometric measure for identifying adolescents who could benefit from further nutritional assessment and hemoglobin testing.
