Abstract

This research aims to determine the content validity of the Wolio language and culture preservation model measurement instrument. This type of research is development research, using quantitative descriptive methods. The research subjects consisted of 9 experts, namely lecturers and teachers who understand the Wolio language and culture preservation model. Experts assess each item of the instrument statement. The instrument uses an ordinal rating scale and consists of 3 indicators. The collected data was analyzed using the Aiken's V formula. As a result, of the 15 instrument statement items, the content validity coefficient was greater than 0.74, indicating that all items were valid. There are 13 items in the very good category and 2 items in the good category. So this instrument is very suitable for use in measuring or assessing models of sociolinguistic preservation of language and culture.

Abstract

Language competence not only refers to the underlying knowledge of the linguistic aspects of the language system under study, such as grammar and lexis, but also an understanding of the extra-linguistic features of a given communicative scenario, all of which contribute to meaning and the interpretation of meaning, This study aims to: (1) to determine whether there is a correlation between EFL Indonesian university students’ grammatical competence and their pragmatic competence, and (2) to investigate the influence of students’ grammatical competence towards their pragmatic competence. The data collected are from year 2 English students by using grammatical and pragmatic tests for students to answer. Their answers were analyzed quantitatively to obtain the mean score and further will be compared. The results show that: 1) students perform low on both aspects (m1=8.78, and m2=10.46, 2) there is a moderate positive correlation between the two sections (r=.54, p=0.01), and 3) students’ grammatical knowledge contributes on their pragmatic knowledge on medium level (t(65)=-.36, p=0.01). The average level of achievement that students could attain on grammar shows that it is still a challenging aspect in FL learning despite they have received 4 compulsory grammar subjects. This challenge should be taken into concern as the result of this study also shows that grammatical competence could affect learners’ initial competence on pragmatic as week. Therefore, there is a need of improvement on EFL teaching methods especially for grammatical subjects due to very low achievement on this central skill which will contribute to the other skills.

Abstract

EFL learners employ various strategies in presentation. Affective strategies help them to give effective presentation in English on any topic. The objective of this study was to find out the most frequently used affective strategies adopted by the proficient learners of the Department of English, Jagannath University, Dhaka, Bangladesh, in their presentation sessions. A mixed-methods approach was used to collect the data in this research. The participants of this research were fourteen (five males and nine females) proficient learners. Oxford’s (1990) SILL (“Strategy Inventory for Language Learning”) questionnaire and interview were used to collect the data. The result showed that the good language learners employed the following affective strategy most frequently to develop their presentation skills: “I encourage myself to speak a foreign language even when I am afraid of making a mistake” (50% ). The next most frequently used strategy was “I talk to someone else about how I feel when I am learning a foreign language” (42.85% ). The third most used strategy was “I notice if I am tensed or nervous when I am studying or using a foreign language” (28.59%). The findings of the research will help learners to develop their presentation skills in English in Bangladesh.

Abstract

The COVID19 pandemic has compelled teachers to convert their physical classes to online instruction within a brief time-frame. The study’s purpose is to investigate higher education teachers' perceptions and experiences of their online teaching after months of online instruction during the outbreak of pandemic situations and to examine the challenges faced by the teachers in adapting to the online teaching-learning process during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study employs a mixed-method approach to collect data. This method includes both quantitative and qualitative approaches to broaden the scope and intensity of the research. A survey has been conducted and a questionnaire is framed and has been disseminated among higher education teachers across colleges, universities of Tamilnadu and Karnataka. Overall, 194 respondents participated in the survey to express their views and experiences. The survey provided quantitative data, while open-ended questions in the questionnaire offered qualitative insights. The findings illuminate two primary challenges: the teachers' experiences with online teaching during the Covid-19, as well as their lack of knowledge in the online teaching and learning mode—in the survey, the quantitative data analysis highlight two issues: internet connectivity and self-inspection or monitoring. On the other hand, open-ended questions in the questionnaire offered qualitative insights on  their perceptions and experiences regarding the easiness and benefit of technology utilization, the usefulness of technology, and also the support they experienced during the transition. the research recommends incorporating specific features into the Learning Management System (LMS). The research proposes blended or hybrid learning should be implemented because e-learning requires a significant amount of self-study or conscience; teachers should develop and provide high-quality e-resources to students, with an in-depth focus on conundrum during online interactive classrooms.

Abstract

A textbook is one of the essential learning sources for EFL/ESL learners, especially in vocabulary acquisition. It must be evaluated and selected when performing eight categories (aims and approaches, design and organization, language content, skill, topic, methodology, teacher’s book, and practical considerations). The language content category evaluates whether the EFL/ESL materials used in the learning process for vocabulary teaching are adequate in terms of vocabulary quality and range, the emphasis placed on vocabulary development, and strategies for individual learning. It is possible to say that learning a language is fundamental and so deeply dependent on vocabulary. This study is aimed to identify the number of lexical units found in the reading materials of an EFL textbook, Developing English Competencies 3, and to measure the sufficiency of lexical units found in the reading materials of the textbook in vocabulary quantity and range by comparing to the general frequency list, Michael West’s GSL (1953). The book became the object of this descriptive quantitative study with the specific linguistic field, corpus. A computational tool, RANGE, and FREQUENCY, designed by Nation (2001) and then developed by Heatley, Nation, and Coxhead (2002) was applied to count the lexical units easily. It was found that the book was clearly imbalanced concerning the amount of 5,064 tokens and 1,434 types with the distribution of 57.1% in range one, 14.9% in range two, and 5.2% in range three throughout three ranges described by Nation. In summary, the book didn’t propose the foreign learners’ expectations and necessary opportunities for automatizing vocabulary. Besides, it is also limited to offering all possible comprehensive situations, which the students may find in real life
