Abstract

This research focuses on young learners with multi-language ability, Indonesian & English, in its implementation at both school and home. This study examined how young students can speak Indonesian and English fluently as well as how it affects their academic performance at school. The main sources of information in this study were parents and teachers. Data were collected from 1 tuition center and 1 elementary school in Manado. The data included questionnaire, interview notes from both parents and teachers, along with researcher’s observation notes. Academic performance of students is measured based on semester report from schools and quarterly report from tutoring consisting of 3 subjects, English, Science, and math. Those subjects selected are considered as preeminent subject by teachers and parents. The research results factors supporting young learners be able to speak more than one language and how multilingualism affects the academic performance of young learners at school on those 3 selected subjects.

Abstract

The parents communication patterns on the childrens’ were communication carried out by parents with children to character building. The Objectives of this study were to find out to character of children and parents communication patterns at Bukit Mega Harmony Residence, Moncongloe Sub-District, Maros Regency. The methods of this research used to descriptive approach qualitative method. This research was conduct on October 9th until 23th 2023 at Bukit Mega Harmony Residence, Moncongloe Sub-District, Maros Regency. The sample of this research were 6 parents of six childrens’ who had children aged 5 to 11 years. This research result found that there were various children's characters such as stubbornness, indifference, and resistance. They must got what they want if they don't get what they want, they were angry, cry and be impatient. Meanwhile, the parents communication patterns included high tone of voice, biting, hitting, and used a sharp gaze, but some of parents exhibited the vocal expressions of frustration or anger while engaging in communication with their children.

Abstract

This research aims to explore the lecturer’s incorporation of humor in teaching speaking skills at Universitas Iqra Buru and to find out the constraints encountered by the lecturer in teaching speaking skills through humor at Universitas Iqra Buru.. This research applied the descriptive qualitative design. In the English education department, there were six lecturers, and then the researcher used a purposive sampling technique with criteria; the lecturers who taught speaking skills used humor strategies, so the researcher got one lecturer who met the requirements. Then, in the class where the lecturer taught, there were seventeen students. The research instruments were observation, interviews, and documentation. This research showed that the lecturer included humor in teaching speaking skills during learning, namely at the beginning of the lesson, then in the middle of the lesson, and at the end of the lesson. According to students, teaching using humor is very effective, comfortable, not stressful, eliminates anxiety, can understand the material presented by the lecturer, reduces stress and stiffness in receiving material, and keeps students focused.

Abstract

Gender studies on language education have been a concerning topic among scholars. It has been encouraged through some interest in international organizations and Indonesia's government regulation on gender equality. However, few studies have investigated the review of gender representation in English textbooks in Indonesia. To fill this gap, the present study aims to review and discuss the studies of gender representation in learning materials, mainly English textbooks in Indonesia, and the possible future direction of the studies related to be conducted. The study was conducted through the literature analysis that was published within the last five years. The literature analysis involved gender representation in English textbooks in Indonesia, both junior and senior high school level textbooks. The first part of the paper presents an illustration of gender history in Indonesia. The second part discusses the current studies of gender representation in English textbooks in Indonesia. The third part attempts to explain the possible future of the studies related to be conducted. The study concludes that textbook plays an important role as a media that constructs both students' and teachers' perspectives on gender value and awareness in society and culture. Suggestions for further studies are made to bring other directions in conducting gender studies in English textbooks in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study aims to find out the influence of the audio-lingual method (AML) in learning student vocabulary. The study uses a quantitative methodology to assess students' proficiency with the audio-lingual method (AML) in vocabulary learning. The audio-lingual Method (AML) arose after the aural-oral approach was devised in 1939 at the first English language Institute at the University of Michigan, United States by Charles Fries. The population of this study is first-grade students of SMA Negeri 21 Makassar 2023 There were five classes consisted 33 students per class. Moreover, The collecting data in this research are vocabulary tests and questionnaires. A vocabulary test is the instrument to find out whether dialogue can improve their vocabulary, while a questionnaire is an instrument for knowing the students' responses. The result of this study is Using the audio-lingual Method (ALM), students' pre-test and post-test scores on their vocabulary tests increased. The quantity of data, where 40% of the data showed that the student's scores improved as a result of using the audio-lingual method (ALM) in their English learning. In particular, with the growing influence of technology, vocabulary learning should be easier to be creative with, as there are many learning models that teachers can be inspired by to make their classes suit students' learning preferences, especially in this era.

Abstract

The present study aimed to investigate the factors that affected the improvement of students’ speaking skills through group discussion technique at Vocational High School 5 Gowa. To carry out the phenomena, this study employed a descriptive qualitative methodology. The data were collected by using semi-structured interviews to obtain the deepest data about the factors that affected the improvement of students’ speaking skills through discussion technique at Vocational High School 5 Gowa. The populations were all classes in second grade, and then the samples were two classes that were chosen deliberately or purposively through nonprobability sampling. From the two classes, the participants were comprised of twenty (20) students, and each class involved 10 students. To analyze the data, this study used a thematic analysis process to discover the themes or factors that emerged as the data later. The results revealed that there are seven factors as themes appeared in this study, they are cohesiveness, conformity, roles, goals, charismatic leadership, inspiration, and competition and conflict factors. In conclusion, the seven factors assisted the students in improving their speaking skills; such as conveying ideas freely, having good confidence in speaking, and learning to respect other members’ ideas. The finding of this study can encourage English teachers at vocational school to use group discussion technique in their English classes to reach better teaching speaking skills improvement of the students.

Abstract

The popularity of online learning in education became pervasive immediately during the outbreak of COVID-19. There are so many obstacles that lecturers and students may face while doing online learning throughout some applications, especially in areas that experience difficulties or obstacles while using the online system. This research aimed to figure out the students’ perception towards e-learning/online learning during the covid-19 pandemic at the eleventh grade of SMA Negeri 3 Palopo. The method that the researcher used in this research was the descriptive qualitative method and through the online questionnaire, the researcher administered open-ended questionnaire to the eleventh grade of the students in SMA Negeri 3 Palopo. The data was analyzed using descriptive qualitative analysis. The result of this research indicates that the students had a negative perception towards e-learning during the covid-19 pandemic because the online learning was not effective enough. Some obstacles/problem were faced during the online learning was the unstable network, hard to understand the material, lack of internet quota, and lack of motivation.

Abstract

The development of online learning and digital technologies has influenced the formation of EFL teacher identity. This literature review investigates the development of EDL teacher identity during online learning. This review aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the complexities and subtleties of EFL teacher identity construction in the online learning context. The selected studies were collected through a systematic approach. Thematic analysis was employed to analyze the unique challenges encountered by EFL instructors during online learning, their adaptation and transformation in identity construction, and the pedagogical implications for effective online language teaching. The results emphasized the importance of addressing challenges, supporting EFL teachers in professional development, and implementing effective teaching methods in online language learning. These findings contribute to the improvement of EFL teacher preparation, pedagogical practices, and online learning support systems.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to investigate how the students perceive to the implementation of PjBL in ICT for English language teaching. This study applied quantitative research where questionnaire about students’ interaction, motivation, understanding, problem solving, and suitability of the subject was administered to the students. The result of this research was show that the implementation of PjBL allow the students have good interaction to other groups member. It can improve their communication and teamwork. Second, PjBL also can motivate the students to explore the subject by giving them projects so the students enthusiastic in join the class. Third, PjBL can ease them to understand the subjects given by making the projects so they can directly practice. Fourthly, their problem solving can improve because in having the projects, they must solve the problem in ICT for English language teaching. And the last is the respondents perceive that PjBL are suitable implemented in ICT for English language teaching class.

Abstract

This research is about an analysis of internship students anxiety int eaching English. This research was conducted at STKIP Paracendekia NW Sumbawa. The purpose of this research is formulated;(1) to find out the anxiety level that internship English students in teaching English, (2) to describe the influencing factors of internship students anxiety in teaching English. There search design uses mix methods. The subjects of this study were of sixth semester students at STKIP Paracendekia NW Sumbawa. Data collection was carried out using questionnaires, interview, and documentation. The results of the study showed that students had low and medium level of anxiety. This research also shows the factors that cause students anxiety in teaching English such as: lack of proficiency, lack of preparation of teaching materials, teaching performance, lack of class management, lack of self-confidence, expectations of tutor, and difficult to adaptation. This research expected to help for student, readers and future researcher can use the results of this study references, especially regarding the anxiety of English teaching internship.
