Abstract

The aim of this paper is particularly to provide a holistic representation of pedagogic competence related tothe use of authentic texts. Based on Undang-Undang Guru dan Dosen (UUGD) No.14, 2005, teachers are pro-fessional educators who have the main responsibilities to educate, teach, supervise, train, assess, and evaluate students. Teachers, therefore, ought to possess standard academic qualifications and a set of competence to achieve such objectives. Competence is set of a professional knowledge, skills, and behavior that must be pos-sessed, internalized, mastered, and actualized by teachers. One of those competences is pedagogic competence which focuses on the knowledge and the ability of the teacher to construct or assemble teaching resources. In relation to pedagogic competence, professional teachers should creatively adapt textbook material and other audio, visual, or mechanical aids as teaching material. Authentic texts are one of those materials that can be used by teachers to create variety. By using authentic texts teachers are enforced to create innovative teach-ing methods which also part of pedagogical skill. In other words, the use of authentic texts will also influence another ability of the teachers especially in pedagogical competence. Keywords: Pedagogic competence, authentic text, innovative teaching.

Abstract

The study suggests how figurative language is related to the description of characterization in children litera-ture. To ensure that the indirectness of the figurative language actually helps describing characterizations further, the study focuses on the description of the simile, metaphor, personification, hyperbole, and irony (Rozakis, 1999) of the main characters of Wilde’s The Nightingale and the Rose. The analysis on the figura-tive language uses is used as the base for interpreting the story’s characterization. It reveals that figurative language describes characterization relating to the information on the characters’ mental and physical attrib-utes. Each of the figurative language categories describes the characterization in certain way in order to make the particular abstract concepts for characterization detailed and concrete. In that case, with the help of figu-rative language, the story may be comprehended better by young readers. Abstract

Most EFL learners in Indonesia have already known that English grammatically has active and passive con-structions. However, the so called medio-passive constructions in English have not been seriously introduced and understood by many EFL learners; they do not have sufficient knowledge and “grammatical conscious-ness” on the stylistic constructions, then. The lack of understanding and grammatical consciousness may raise academic and psychological problems on English grammar. Such lack of grammatical consciousness may academically affect both learners’ and teachers’ competency standards. Many students cannot use gram-matical and communicative English appropriately in academic and practical uses. This paper briefly dis-cusses the academic need for grammatical consciousness on the medio-passive constructions as part of learn-ers’ and teachers’ competency standards in EFL, particularly in multilingual speakers like in Indonesia. Key words/phrases: medio-passive, grammatical consciousness, EFL, competency standards
