Abstract

In 1970s, Language Awareness (LA) was put forward, primarily by modern linguists, as a new ‘bridging’ element in the UK school curriculum. It was viewed as a solution to several of the failures in the UK schools: illiteracy in English, failure to learn foreign languages, and divisive prejudices. To Van Lier (2001) current interest in LA stems from three sources: Pedagogically oriented LA, Consciousness raising, and critical perspective. This paper concentrates on psycholinguistic focus on consciousness-raising (hereafter C-R activities) and explicit attention to language form or grammar. Three relevant issues are discussed here. Firstly, the nature of LA, its principles, objectives and procedures are discussed. Secondly, this study delves into the main justifications and implications of LA. Last but not the least, this paper tries to present an overview of the rationale behind the use of C-R activities in teaching grammar and current perspectives in grammar teaching. Abstract

Eventhough Indonesia and Malaysia are included in a group of Malay tribe, both countries are often faced with conflicts such as border, Indonesian workers in Malaysia, and cultural heritage claims. The conflicts between Indonesia and Malaysia can be found in the blog written by Indonesian and Malaysian bloggers. This paper aims to analyze the use of language and its meaning in the blogs”. The analysis by using discourse analysis shows that the war of language happen between Indonesian and Malaysian to respond the conflicts. The both sides have used a rough language to ridicule and to underestimate each other. The kinds of language used in the blogs are refusal, ridiculous, comparative, and metaphor. The findings of the research conclude that the blogs have been used freely to convey the feeling of hatred and battle by Indonesian and Malaysian bloggers.

Abstract

This paper discusses the meaning of the complex clause by a series of processes that are combined in a logical of the two clauses. Complex clause can be combined through one of two logical-semantic relationships that is expansion or projection. Systemic Functional Linguistics approach is used to describe the five texts taken at random. The five texts are: (1) Gembala dan malaikat, (2) Pendahuluan, (3) Melakukan Studi Gender dalam Bahasa, (4) Korporasi, Kerja dan Kultur, dan (5) Gara-gara Dilarang Bertemu (1) Shepherd and angels, (2) Introduction, (3) Doing Gender in Language Studies, (4) Corporations, Employment and Culture, and (5) Due to Divorce, No Meet Pets. The analysis of the five texts is not opposed but complementary to one another. By using a qualitative descriptive method, it was found two types of logical-semantic relations: (1) Expansion, and (2) projection. Integrating through one of the logical-semantic relations: expansion or projection is realized through a system of mutual dependence or taxis that can be divided into paratactic and hypotactic. Abstract

Linguistic anthropology is the discipline studying the language by applying the concepts of culture and anthropology, and trying to explore the tacit meaning underlying the application of the terms. A kinship or familial system is usually implied in the address terms used by the society. This is one of the phenomena under its investigation. It shows how the language in the society and its relation to the cultural phenomenon. The paper tries to explore the phenomenon of kinship system and its language realization in the community of Kebumen Regency. It is to describe the phenomenon and its unique characteristics. The analysis shows that there are 16 generations included in the familial system. They are (1) bapak, rama, ibu, biyung (2) mbah, kaki, nini, eyang (3) buyut, (4) canggah, (5) wareng, (6) udheg-udheg, (7) gantung siwur, dan (8) petarangan bubrah. Generasi ke bawah, yaitu (1) anak, (2) putu, (3) buyut, (4) canggah, (5) wareng, (6) udheg-udheg, (7) gantung siwur, and (8) petarangan bubrah. All are the first direct lineality, which can be extended to the next lineality: uwa, siwa, lilik, bibi, paman, om, tante, kakang, mbekayu, adi, alo, plunan, and ponakan. The third lineality will include misan. The kinship terms are drawn from the blood bond. In reality, the terms are sometimes addressed to an individual beyond the familial relation, for example the terms like lilik, mbah, and om. They are frequently used for addressing a person to show respect, without any meaning that implies the kinship relation.

Abstract

Teacher’s domination and authority used to prevail the traditional language teaching is now left and replaced by more acceptable concept of teaching. This concept emphasizes on developing the sense of learners’ responsibility, independence, or autonomy, for better learning outcome. Autonomous language learners are those assumed to have greater responsibility on their own learning for their own needs. A series of guided practice through a step-by-step manner is needed in order that students can be possibly trained to be autonomous, independent learners. This paper discusses learning activities created and designed by the students combined with teacher’s encouragements to foster learner autonomy. Some theories and previous studies on learner autonomy are analyzed to support the discussion. It is believed that the combination between the two important aspects in autonomous language learning will strengthen the efforts of promoting learner autonomy in ELT. Abstract

Poster is one of the media used by an industry to market the movie products to the publics. It functions to give a preview to the potential audiences about the content or the story in a movie. In 2000s, horror movies became the popular genre produced. Many directors compete to create the most scary. This article explores the messages of horror as reflected from the poster of the movie. It is also try to compare the way the horror is packaged through poster between the eastern culture and the western culture. This is done by applying Pierce’s theory of sign.

Abstract

This research involved Thailand and Indonesia which is a multilingual country and has 749 dialects thoroughly. Dialect influences the way people speak foreign language in term of pronunciation, grammar and accent; the speech of people from different social and region. This paper investigates problems with English pronunciation among Javanese, Sundanese, Thai, and Thai-Malay students. Identifying key reasons of the pronunciation problems began by discussing the value of intelligible pronunciation and reviewing the rele-vant literature. Next, it focuses on the participants’ pronunciation problems in term of consonant phonemes. The method of this research is mixed method research. It means, the researcher employed qualitative and quantitative method to collect, to analyze, and to draw the conclusion of the data analysis. As the result, the researcher found varieties of English consonants pronunciation uttered by four dialects. Thai has difficulties in pronouncing allophones /z/, /θ/, /ð/, /ʃ/, /v/, /tʃ/, /b/, /dʒ/, /d/, /l/, /t/, /s/, /k/, /b/. Thai-Malay had difficulties in pronouncing allophones /z/, /θ/, /ð/, /ʃ/, /v/, /tʃ/, /b/, /dʒ/, /k/, /s/. Meanwhile, Javanese had difficulties in pronouncing /θ/, /ð/, /ʃ/, /v/, /tʃ/, /z/, /dʒ/, /k/, /w/, /g/. Sundanese had difficulties in pronouncing allophones /ð/, /v/, /tʃ/, /θ/, /p/, /ʃ/, /f/, /s/. Furthermore, Thai student had the highest varieties of pronouncing English consonants. Otherwise, Sundanese was the lowest one. Abstract

Young female writers shocked the literary field of Indonesia by publishing their works in their way: light, unburdened, and fresh. Their language choice is easily understandable: the novels were written in colloquial style. The books were sold well. It did refresh our literary world. The teenagers, at least, have more alternatives to read something composed by their peers. Through their pens, our teens share their views on reality in their very style.                        One of outstanding concepts evoked in their writing is the formulation of “ beauty”. This paper took four novels, My Friends-My Dream, Ramalan Fudus Ororpus, Kana di Negeri Kiwi, dan Summer Triangle, to discover the teen’s perspective concerning beauty. The concept is internalized in their mind through the discourses developed in their social background and through the media. They select those discourses, and take one they believe in it.                    They analysis shows that their concept of beauty is not so different from the general one or patriarchal beauty. However, they insist that being beauty does not necessarily mean to be happy, as it was obviously declared in Kana di Negeri Kiwi. The beauty is : tall, white, black and straight hair, and well-shaped  body. This is just a result of the dominance of patriarchy, standing in the same position of capitalism to whom the main stream media are belonged. The media holder is the only one dictating what’s to be “ beauty.”

Abstract

English does not only belong to the natives. Its speakers even are dominated by the non-natives. This very fact ideally should be seen on books of English learning. This is a way to present English as a global language. The article is aimed to see the presentation of others in English from the books, New Cutting Edge.Based on the analysis, it was found out that the books have accommodated the non-natives. Others’ presence include the persons, their cultures, and talks. The names of the character in the books are various, reflecting their origins. The books are also culturally representative. They describe various unique cultures belong to the world. Finally, the books also adopt others’ English, like declaring that their English is also true. Thus, it concludes that the books have shown that English belong to the world, and claimed that all people and their cultures stand equally in the global interaction.

Abstract

Gender---means a concept, design or value---refers to the system of social relationships that distinguish the functions and roles of women and men because of biological differences or nature. At the same, the society then standardized to 'culture' and as if no longer negotiable, such that it is appropriate for men, while others for women. Various efforts were made to elevate and position of women as equal to men through a variety of institutions, both formal and non-formal. The final goal to be achieved is the realization of gender equality (social justice) in the midst of society. Among the strategies to achieve justice is to involve women in develop-ment. The provision of equal opportunities for women to perform activities in various fields as men appar-ently do not guarantee for the realization of gender equality Keywords: women’s representation, gender, stereotype
