Abstract

Effective teaching conducted by teachers becomes one of the affecting factors toward students’ learning achievement. Effective teaching and learning here is teaching learning process that is locally and education-ally relevant and meaningful to the students. However, it is not easy for teachers to full fill this and that is why they need to do self-evaluation for keeping them moving with the process of adopting, adapting, and mediating the current views in teaching, current needs of the students and the current condition of the school. This paper proposes a practical model for providing clinical supervision to help teachers build their instructional ability by fostering teachers to do self-evaluation of their teaching. This paper also describes the challenges, problems, and practical solutions and strategies for helping teachers build their pedagogic compe-tence in terms of providing English instruction. Abstract

This paper deals with a topic self-reflection in developing teaching performance. Self-reflection is a vital skill to reflect and evaluate teachers’ teaching performance in the classroom. However, there are many teachers running monotonous classes because they do not make a self-reflection. This consideration explores teachers’ strengths and weaknesses in learning process. This research will help the teachers to maintain or eliminate critical incident on learning and teaching process. This research had been conducted at English Education Department, University of Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta. The respondents consist of some English Foreign Language (EFL) teachers. This research used qualitative research design. Then the researcher used interview as a research instrument to elaborate the information. The data becomes the parameter whether the respon-dents give agreements or disagreements to the case in using self-reflection. Considering the reasons above, the researcher makes an implication that self-reflection can be a good method for EFL teachers. The finding reveals that teachers who use self-reflection get better ways on how to explore well performance in the class-room. Writing journal is a kind of reflective language teaching that has been employed to enhance teachers’ skill in teaching. Therefore, self-reflection is also to engage systematic reflection on teaching. Keywords: Self-Reflection, Professional Development, Teaching Performance, Teaching Reflective

Abstract

What is translation studies for? Such a question, though currently relevant, may still become initially provoking, especially to established translation students. Why ask such a question? Indeed, it is a matter of choice to ask or not to ask it, nevertheless, in this paper I choose to offer an answer to this question. Essentially asking this question is only a logical consequence of the postmodern culture, to emphasize that a disciplined inquiry is to serve the student, and not the other way round. I will do it system wise, i.e. both systematically and systemically. The system treatment is to allow not a peace-meal but more holistic coverage of the subject matter, from its metaphysics to its operation. I am hoping the discussion will help translation students think big and act small in developing a more authentic project of translation studies.

Abstract

Autonomy in language learning suggests that students control their own learning (Benson, 2001). Students’ control over their own learning consists of three aspects, namely controls over learning management, cognitive process and learning content. This paper aims at exploring stu-dents’ control over learning management while working on project-based English language learn-ing, namely the collaborative audio-journal project. It is argued that project-based language learn-ing provides a principled and practicable route toward autonomy (Thomas, 1991, cited in Benson, 2001: 21).In this regards, students themselves plan, monitor, solve problems, and evaluate the pro-ject accomplishment without much intervention from the teacher. A qualitative method was employed in this study. Two instruments were used to obtain the data, namely reflection sheet and interview. The results obtained from the study revealed that students employed four major controls over learning management, including planning, problem solving, monitoring, and evaluating. The planning included time and quality, creativity, and strategy. The students also encountered the constraints, such as time management, language proficiency, and laziness, which entailed problem solving strategies. The monitoring included rereading, re-listening, and comparing. Lastly, the students conducted self-evaluation on the process and the product. Key words: learner autonomy, project-based language learning, andcontrol over learning man-agement.

Abstract

One of the rationales of teaching English in primary schools is to motivate students‘interest in English language learning. There are two keywords underpin this idea; motivation and interest. To be able to motivate and attract students‘interest in learning English, teachers are required to create interesting teaching and learning process. Some techniques are proposed to work with this idea, such as teaching English through games, sing songs, role play or telling story. These activities are expected help teachers to create enjoyable teaching atmosphere for their students and maintain their learning motivation. However, there seems to be a contradictory situation faced by the teachers in relation to their teaching English. Teachers have to test the students to measure their achievements. Their achievements will be an instrument to justify whether the teaching of English is successful or not. Now, the objective of learning has turned its direction, not again to motivate the students but more to force the students to achieve a particular standard. Teaching is not created to attract interest but it creates to make students able to do the test. There is a missing link. To deal with this problem, one way teachers might do is to change or alter the test form, not focused in a written form but it might be presented in more interactive way.

Abstract

In the development of current perspectives on language learning, there is an increasing recognition of the limits of communicative language teaching as it is practiced in particular contexts and with this an emphasis on the ‘bilingual turn’ and the development of multilinguality. This emphasis represents a shift from a monolingual view of language learning to one which recognises the relationships among the language(s) that learners bring to their learning and the language being learnt. Drawing on examples from classroom based research and with recent work on development of a national curriculum for language learning in Australia, I discuss some of the characteristic features of learning within a multilingual and multicultural perspective and I discuss implications for teaching practice.

Abstract

In translation, an equivalent communicative effect will be more difficult to attain, as the cultural distance between the receivers of the source and target text is greater. This may lead into what is termed as a problem of untranslatability. Cultural distance between the receivers of the source and the target text can cause some problems in translating. Sometimes is necessary to omit some features having a little or no textual relevance in a given source text. It means sacrificing less relevant textual details and maintaining more relevant ones to attain a maximum equivalent communicative effect. The paper discusses some issues related to the problems in translation, especially the phenomena that appear in the German translation from Indonesian and English expressions. Abstract

There have been a number of research studies that point out that students’ self-efficacy has a close relationship with their academic achievement. Giving speeches in English requires a high level of self-efficacy because confidence and English skills are both needed when performing the assignment in front of an audience and examiners. This research tries to investigate the students’ self-efficacy in giving speeches in EFL classes and their performance, which is reflected in their academic achievements. The research involved 89 non-English department university students in a non- English speaking country. The speech course was given to the students in their fourth semester after they completed English courses focusing on reading and writing, speaking and listening, and extensive reading in their first, second and third semester respectively. Questionnaires are distributed to the students to find out their level of self-efficacy. Their achievements were assessed based on the rubrics provided and distributed to the students at the beginning of the course. The data were then analyzed using SPSS.The research found that self-efficacy in English speech delivery did correlate to the academic achievement.
