Abstract

This article is result of a research that describes tembang macapat (Javanase traditional poem) whichbelongs to the Javanese community and commonly read in a recital. The description encompasses the creative, the publishing, and the recital processes. This research is conducted by the use of descriptive qualitative method. Data is collected by participatory observation and interview, and analysed critically by the theory of tembang. Result shows that tembang macapat is one of Javanese traditional literary works. It is called traditional due to the rigid rules applied on the writing process. Rules that have to be adhered are guru gatra (number of lines on each verse), guru lagu (vocal sound at the end of each line), and guru wilangan (number of syllable on each line). These rules differ from the rules in Javanese literary works called geguritan, which is more like free poem. To date, traditional tembang or macapat is produced by Javanese and published in local newspaper. It is also recited in a performance before audiences. The performance of macapat can still be found in Yogyakarta and conducted at night. In this way tembang macapatan is preserved, well appreciated by the Javanese and becomes precious legacy.

Abstract This article is aimed at analyzing the reflection of Javanese cultural value which is expressed in Bekisar Merah by Ahmad Tohari. The analysis employs sociology of literature paradigm with mimetic approach. The result of the analysis shows that culture value and Javanese tradition emerge dominantly in the novel. Furthermore, it also demonstrates Javanese reflection of life, their religious value, and the supremacy of their negative presumption. The concept and character of Javanese attitude is implemented on the manner of the main character or the novel. This concept, named Hastasila, constitutes Trisila (remember, believe, and “mituhu”), and Pancasila (consent, acquiescent to one’s fate, wholeheartedly, patient, sensible). Abstract

This paper is based on the use of effective sentence-making rules in Indonesian language teaching which reads: subject and object should not be given a preposition. Sentences whose subject is preceded by a preposition are deemed ineffective / ungrammatical. Onthe other hand, the preposition is obligatory to express the role of locative, instrument, comitative, etc.. Under certain conditions the preposition is optional. For example, in the sentence Anjing itu dipukul (oleh) Ali. The problem are: (i) what is the preposition function in Indonesian grammar? (ii) at what position can the preposition be deleted? (iii) why are these prepositions be deleted? To answer the problem, the clause will be analyzed from the predicate and argument base. Arguments are distinguished from nonargument. Prepositions in the Indonesian language are used to distinguish arguments and non arguments, and determine the role of semantic constituent clauses. Prepositions may be fixed in (i) positions behind the direct verb, and (ii) the semantic role is obvious. The reason for this clear semantic role that makes the preposition can be wiped out.

Abstract

Janger performing art is still able to attract the public because of its ability to adopt various local languages in Banyuwangi. In addition to apply Javanese language, it also utilizes Using, Madurese, and Indonesia languages. Nevertheless, the actors of Janger cannot simply mix language. Appropriateness in applying and mixing languages is a prerequisite for being a successful actor. This article aims to analyze the ways in which actors adopt four languages in their performances. Therefore the relevant approach used is the perspective of orality. This approach leads to the answer that the local languages are the cultural cohesive device between Janger performing art and its audiences. Although using different languages, the three major ethnic groups in Banyuwangi, namely Using, Javanese, and Madurese can together become Janger supporters because symbolically all of them feel become the owner of Janger.

Abstract

This study discusses about the relation between students’ bilingualism (particularly second language learners) acquired through studying at school and student’s capability in inter-ethnic social interaction. It is assumed that local language teaching at school provides students capability of bilingualism. Students’ bilingualism plays important role in their multicultural perspective endorsing them to have tolerance and solidarity to different ethics and culture, all of which are the factors to build harmony in plural society. Observed subjects are secondary school students with plural cultural backgroundsin Jember, Situbondo, and Banyuwangi. As a matter of fact, people in those three regencies have plural cultural background, however, the teaching of local language is different. This research is conducted with analytic-quantitative paradigm. Data analysis is conducted in two ways: (a) qualifying andgeneralizing dataand (b) qualifying and relating data with their social context. The result shows that (1) learning local language at 6 secondary schools in the three regencies has impact ondifferent achievements concerning students’ bilingualism; (2) there is a correlation between students’ bilingualismand their capability of having interaction with different ethnic; (3) there is a correlation between students’ language performance and their solidarity, tolerance and integrity with people of different ethnics. (4) the consequence of teaching only majorities’ local language is that students’ of major ethnic merely have competence of their own local language, and thus have less capability of bilingualism concerning local language of different ethnic. Students’ linguistic repetoir are not improved. On the other hand, students from minor ethnic do not get competence of their own local language but get other ethnic’s local language instead. Students of minor ethnic have advantage in that they are able to take part in their social role using their competence of major ethnic’s local language. However, it also has negative impact in that they have limited competence in their own local language and culture, and gradually lose their own identity as they become dominated by major ethnic. Abstract

This article discusses about Little Eyolf , a drama written by Henrik Ibsen , telling about a handicapped child, named Eyolf, who is hard enough to find his self-actualization because his parents and neighborhoods give him poor affection. To study this phenomenon, the inductive method is applied to analyze the self-actualization. The study focuses on Eyolf’s self actualization and aims to fid out how Eyolf gets his self actualization in his life. By the unsupportive environment, Eyolf escapes from reality and lives in his world of fantasy to fulfill his own need. The spirit of Eyolf to find his own redemption is closely related to the Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. Therefore, in this study is applied qualitative research. Eyolf’s dying spirit of self-actualization ends with tragedy. However, in this final scene, his parents regrets not giving Eyolf the needs for physiological, safety, self esteem, belongingness and love during his childhood. The result of the research proves that to achieve his self-actualization or the basic need of his life, Eyolf needs very much his parents’s care and affection but it is never happened during his childhood time.
