Abstract

The sociolinguistic study is one of the interdisciplinary branches of sociology and linguistics with the object of language study as a means to communicate in the community. One of which is language selection. This study discusses the choice of language used by sellers and buyers and the factors behind the choice of language used by sellers and buyers in Randuagung District Market, Lumajang Regency. In general, this research is descriptive qualitative research. The data collection stage in this study used the listening method and proficient method. The data analysis stage used intralingual and extra lingual equivalents, presenting the results of data analysis using informal methods. The results showed that the interaction between the seller and the buyer was very communicative. The language selection in Randuagung District's market, Lumajang Regency occurred in three forms: code-switching, code-mixing, and a single language. The factors behind the choice of language are 1) participant, 2) conversation topic, and 3) function (purpose and objective) of speech. There are four types of the participant a) familiarity, b) age differences, c) ethnic background and language of speakers, and d) the presence of third parties.

Abstract

This research use Mas Marco's novel Student Hidjo as material object. The Postcolonial theory will be used to analys Student Hidjo novel’s by Mas Marco. Postcolonial is a set of theories to explore the effects of colonialism in various documents and behaviors, including literature. This study uses qualitative methods to obtain the necessary data from the novel. This type of analysis uses descriptive analysis. The analysis will use deconstruction method. This is in accordance with postcolonialism which is a reversal of the colonial discourse. Such a method is useful for reversing the colonial discourse which presents the relationship between colonizers >< colonized in the novel.. The relationship that seemed stable was undermined by the subjectivity of the colonized through their resistance. The various resistances presented by the colonized were understood by the postcolonialists as a form of an ambivalent legacy of colonialism. The ambivalent side occurs because the resulting resistance strikes both sides. On the one side attacking the invaders, but on the other side attacking resisting subject. Abstract

This article analyzes the ecranization pattern between the novel Raksasa Dari Yogya and the adapted film. Filmize novel usually changes the story text's content because not all novel story text content can be moved on the screen. This study aims to get the changes that occur in the novel's adaptation pattern to the form of a film medium, and the shape of representations existed in the two works. This study uses an ecranization perspective. The methodology used in this study is qualitative because the data are in the form of narrative text in novels and visual texts which are the results of the film captured Raksasa Dari Yogya. The data collection method was collected by reading, taking notes, watching, recording film source data, and processing it. Data analysis is in the form of interpretation of data obtained from novel texts and films. The study results show that there are changes: reducing, adding, or varying modifications in terms of the content of the story text. It is caused by the difference between the media used between novels and films. Books and movies reveal Yogyakarta local wisdom representations in the form of arts and tourism. The local wisdom depicted in novels and movies reflects Yogyakarta culture's richness, strengthening a region's identity. The changes can make the film more attractive without changing the substance of the novel as a whole.

Abstract

This article discusses racism in India as illustrated in Arundhati Roy’s The God of Small Things. The novel contains racism issues in India in 19th century. In the novel, not only is racism experienced by coloured people as a result of white people discriminating them, but also among the coloured people themselves, experienced by those considered inferior based on caste. The research aims at figuring out how racism is constructed in The God of Small Things as well as knowing the ideological position of the author. Hence, Hall’s representation theory is used in this research focusing on discursive approach. The result shows that the author criticizes racism and people’s classification based on caste.

Abstract

Background of this research is about life struggle in the novel entitled Berhenti di Kamu (#BERHENTIDIKAMU) by Gia Pratama. Values ​​are general guidelines to direct human action refer to good and wrong based on the rules to act according to the rules, whether in religion, moral, or social reflecting the beauty and harmony. The research problem is how to represent the value of the main character's struggle in the novel Berhenti di Kamu. The research aims to describe the importance ​​of the battle of life in the novel Berhenti di Kamu. This research's benefit is developing educational theory, especially the idea of values for giving appreciation to the literary works full of life values. This research method is qualitative research. The analysis shows that the importance ​​of struggle is not only physical fighting but also intrapersonal fighting or fighting. Berhenti di Kamu by Gia Pratama explores the internal conflict, which makes the reader perceives the indirect moral lesson. The value of struggle is the outcome of a human's efforts in undergoing the experience, challenges, and problems in life. The importance ​​of conflicts illustrates how big a person's struggle in their life. Human life is inseparable from the human battle itself.

Abstract

The formulation of the problem in this study, namely (1) what verbal meanings are represented in the proverb in the Kaili language, Rai dialect? and (2) what function is represented in the proverb of Kaili in the Rai dialect? The research objectives, namely (1) to describe the representation of verbal meanings in the proverbial Kaili language in the Rai dialect and (2) to describe the functions represented in the proverb in the Kaili language in the Rai dialect. This type of research is qualitative with the method used is descriptive. The research was conducted in Tondo Village, Sirenja District, Donggala Regency, Central Sulawesi Province. The data source is in the form of oral sources (determining the informant). Data collection techniques in this study used field research techniques, namely observation, interviews, recording and recording. The data analysis technique is done by; collect data, reduce data, present data, and conclude. The results showed that in the proverb of the ethnic Kaili, the amount of 16 represented two forms of meaning, namely denotative meaning and connotative meaning.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to describe the illocutionary acts on one of Gita Savitri Devi’s Youtube Channel video entitled Kenapa kita membenci? Beropini eps. 46. The method use in this research is descriptive qualitative method. The data in this research are illocutionary acts spoken by Gita Savitri Devi in one of her Youtube Channel videos. The data source in this research is the narration delivered by Gita Savitri Devi in that video. The data collection techniques using hearken technique. Data analysis techniques in this research were carried out through the steps : (1) Data transcription, (2) Data classification, and (3) Data inference. The results obtained by the type of assertive illocutionary acts, directive illocutionary acts, and expresive illocutionary acts. While the types of commissive illocutionary acts and declaration illocutionary acts were not found in this research.

Abstract

This research discusses the pesantren (Islamic boarding school) education system's reflection in the novel entitled Negeri 5 Menara. The research method used is qualitative in the sociology of literature approach. It is used to cover up the author's social context, literature as a reflection of society, and literature's social function. The study results in the author's social context show that author creativity is motivated by the author's experience and social construction of the author's ideology. In literature as a reflection of society, it described some similarities are found between Pondok Madani and Pondok Modern Darussalam Gontor (PMDG) in implementing a modern education system. It shows that the novel is a representation of social conditions. Modernity in the education system at the pesantren includes jasus [spy], the strict of time discipline, discipline in dress, mudhaharah (speech in three languages), memorization of Arabic vocabulary, use of foreign languages (Arabic and English), a system of admission with selection, and extracurricular activities. In the social function of literature, there are several responses from readers in assessing the novel Negeri 5 Menara's benefits. The author's contribution in giving a message to readers is focused on the function of socio-educationalism.

Abstract

Ahmad, a four-year 8-month-old Somali child who lives in South Tangerang, communicates in an English speaking family, occasionally his mother communicates using Indonesian. Ahmad is unique in speaking both languages. He can speak English fluently and speak Indonesian mixed with English fluently too. The purpose of this study is to determine the second language acquisition system and forms of second language understanding for Ahmad, both in the structure of question sentences and answer sentences. The research data is in the form of language. There are words and sentences that Ahmad used when having a dialogue with the researcher and his mother. Information is collected using " Simak Libat Cakap" (involved conversation observation technique) and listening method with note-taking design and the interview to Ahmad's parents. The classified data were analyzed using descriptive-analytical methods. The results show that Ahmad is a Somali child who speaks English as a mother tongue, and Indonesian as his second language caused by family environmental factors and his mother's laundry workplace, playmates, and social media youtube and television when watching a film with his mother. Ahmad can speak Indonesian mixed with English by having the right grammatical meaning and understanding and answering the researchers' questions and his mother's questions using Indonesian. Phonologically, Ahmat cannot pronounce the sound /r/ and sound /s/. He pronounces the sound /r/ always with the sound /l/, and sound /s/ it is always replaced by the sound /c/.

Abstract

This research reveals the use of swear words in Indonesian language speech, including cursing, the referent of swear words, the type of target substance, the factors that influence the use of swearing, and gender: the data analysis used comparative, matching, and introspection methods with a socio pragmatic lens. Speaking pattern is used to know about the factors behind using the swear words. The study results are that the form of the swearing lexicon consists of words, phrases, and clauses. The shorter the form of swearing, the more expressive the name of curses is. The swear words referred to the body, nature, activity, animal, profession, artist/character, food, spirits, kinship, ethnicity, and hometown. The target substance to which abuse is aimed at ignorance, abnormality, something cursed, unlucky, and disgusting. The swear lexicon is spoken more often by men than women.
