Abstract

Children and teenagers are the next generation. They need to be prepared physically, mentally,and spiritually. The movement of mental revolution is one of the ways to build the children andteenagers’ characters and develop their mental. This movement aims at changing the society’s mental.Oral literature or folklores may be used as one of the tools to obtain the goal. Folklores are customs andoral tradition told by mouths from one to another generation. Folklores may contain moral teachings andcharacter building that the future generation may learn about. This article discusses the moral valuerepresented in folklores as media for mental revolution. There are 5 folklores, entitled Bawang Merah danBawang Putih, Lutung Kasarung, Keong Mas, Malin Kundang and Cindelaras. The moral teachings ofthose folklores are be patient, sincere, diligent, honest, hard work, faithful, humble, not easilydiscouraged, helpful, full of forgiveness, ungreedy, never looking down others, and respectful towardparents. The previous mentioned moral teachings may contribute to making true the mental change sincemoral values may function to build a good personality.Keywords: folklor, nilai moral, revolusi mental

Abstract

Abstract. This study is about Annie de Leeuw’s struggle for freedom in Johanna Reiss’ The Upstairs Room. Annie de Leeuw and her sister, Sini find themselves separated from their Jewish family during the Second World War. The Germans always look for them because they are Jews. Annie struggles to gain her free living like others by hiding in a Gentile family’s small room in upstairs for almost three years. Through the characterization of the main character, this study is analyzed intrinsicly. Apart from intrinsic approach, this study also applies extrinsic approach to strengthen the analysis. The extrinsic approach is needed since it also discussesthe concept of freedom.Annie de Leeuw gains her freedom when they are finally liberated by Canadian troops. Surviving in hiding for a very long time, Annie has almost lost the ability to walk. She gets her freedom in the end after facingmanyhard obstacles in her struggle. It is concluded that freedom is an essential need of human being that has to be struggled. Keywords: struggle for freedom, freedom, character

Abstract

Abstract. This paper discusses the influence of Stephanie Meyer’s Twilight in Indonesian young adult novels. Tuilet and E’pliss are full of references to Meyer’s Twilight , both direct and indirect, in names of characters such as Edward Cullen and Bella and theme which take the inspiration from Twilight. By using Roland Barthes’s theory of intertextuality and Reference Code and Bloom’s literary influence, this paper is expected to provide a critical analysis of how Twilight influences Indonesian young adult fictions. Through cultural texts written for young readers, it will also be seen how cultural background of the author influence the writing. By applying heuristic and hermeneutics methods in literary reading this study identifythe moral message of the author and how the process of understanding of the author worked. As stated by Roland Barthes that there is no original text for each text is affected by various writings, place and time, it will be seen how far the influence of the novel Twilight on Indonesian contemporary young adult fictions. Abstract

Abstract. The presence of adolescent literature - known as teenlit- is a necessity so loved by the teenagers. As one of the literary genres, teenlit seems to be not too complicated. In addition to the story plot that is easy to trace, the style of language is "lively" and the content is centered around teenage world. Teenlit spreading on social media online always gets variety of responses. In short, teenlit is a phenomenon in the adolescent literature. Issues discussed in this study can be formulated as whether teenlit can be used as a medium to improve the literacy culture among adolescents? This research aims to examine and explore how far teenlit can be used as a medium to improve the literacy culture among adolescents. To that end, to teach and appreciate the teenlit literature, teacher should use methods that are varied and close to adolescent life: discussion, questioning, simulation, or the like. Such contextual approaches are the key element in popularizing teenlit for the learner's life. The results of the study indicate that teenlit can be used as an alternative media in increasing the literacy of learners. Literacy not only means to be able to read, but also able to understand the contents of the reading. Thus, the moral message—seventeen commendable characters, including tolerance and unity in diversity, as promoted by by the Government, will be reflected in the actions and behavior of adolescents in the future. Abstract

Abstract. This research aims to describe the classification of shouryakugo forms in printed media like newspaper and magazine. The form of words shortening in Japanese in newspapers and magazines became the main object in this research. The type of research is qualitative descriptive research. The object in this study is new words formed from the shortening process or shouryakugo contained in printed media such as The Daily Jakarta Shinbun newspaper and Nipponika magazine. The result of the research shows that there are total of 14 data of shouryakugo, of which 2 data is shortening at the beginning of word, 3 data of shortening in middle of word, 3 data of shortening at end of word, 5 data by removing partial word from word series, and 1 data shouryakugo by eliminating besides one word. Abstract

Abstract. This research focusses on masculinity tipologies that is constructed by children writers in Kecil-Kecil Punya Karya’s series from their narrative structure. The research adopts isotopy’s concept by Greimas to reveal the masculinity tipologies from the text through relation between actant and story. The research uses Kecil-Kecil Punya Karya’s series about 2015-2016 that is written by children aged 7-12 and use male protagonist in the stories. There are three works that is suitable with the criterias, they are Untukmu Ayah (Rafid,2015), Matahari Pelangi (Rafid, 2015), dan Misteri Tengkorak Purbakala (Bagus, 2016). The result of the research shows that there are similarity perspectives in the masculinity forms that is written by the children writers. In addition, the children also show that they want to be part of society by showing they likes a man. Keywords: masculinities,children writers, isotopy

Abstract

Abstract. Ritual in modern society means a tradition that is made to instill value through symbolic expression to the society. In this case, ludruk as a tradition related to the character of the society and region. In Surabaya, for example, ludruk also encourages the modernization of society in the context of modern cities. In Jember, ludruk is connected with the character of the overseas community, who try to overcome the cultural differences. This paper is based on field research with direct observation and interviews with cultural subjects. This paper seeks to see how the process of the formation of cultural subjects through their cultural role, in this case ludruk performance. Through Jember ludruk performance, overseas people from Java and Madura are trying to understand, experience and interpret the new environment which is different from where they came from. Laken Babad Djember and Sempolan is an effort to produce knowledge about Jember region. The second story of Babad is about the story behind the origin of the names of places in Jember. Ludruk Jember became the way overseas people from Java and Madura overcome cultural alienation through knowledge production. Ludruk Jember also became the home of culture, through which, the overseas people discovered the existence of their native culture: both Java and Madura, in Jember. Finally, as a ritual, Jember's ludruk plays a role in shifting from the original culture into Jember culture, which helped change the subject of the culture into Jember people. Abstrak. Artikel ini melaporkan study komparatif tentang penggunaan transition signals dalam dua jenis teks, yaitu teks naratif dan teks ilmiah. Studi ini menggunakan deskripsi dari Oshima dan Hogue (1998) tentang tipe teks dan penggunaan transition signals dalam berbagai jenis teks. Metode penelitian adalah kualitatif deskriptif. Data diperoleh dari kumpulan dongeng Thomas A. Green berjudul World Folktales (2008) dan Omniglot the Language Encyclopedia Online. Studi melibatkan delapan cerita dongeng dan delapan artikel dari ensiklopedia tersebut. Studi ini menemukan persamaan dan perbedaan dalam penggunaan transition signals. Persamaan penggunaan dalam dongeng dan artikel ilmiah adalah dalam jenis konektor (also, therefore, next, thus, however, too), koordinator (and, but,so for, or, and so, and yet), dan subordinator (while, since, though, when, as, before, as though, if, until, because, after). Abstract

Abstrak. Artikel ini membahas pentingnya kebahagiaan dalam kehidupan sebagaimana digambarkan dalam novel Eat, Pray, Love karya Elizabeth Gilbert. Penelitian ini menganalisis kehidupan seorang penulis yang sukses yang memiliki pengalaman tragis namun penuh pelajaran dalam usahanya mencari kebahagiaan sejati. Permasalahan yang diajukan meliputi perspektif kebahagiaan tokoh cerita serta penyebab dan akibat dari pencarian kebahagiaan tersebut. Penelitian menggunakan pendekatan kasus kualitatif. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa perspektif tokoh tentang kebahagiaan meliputi: simple life, friendships, spiritual development, love of nature, kindness. Penyebab pencarian kebahagiaan meliputi unhappy marriage, insecure relationship, self-underestimate, and discontentment. Sementara akibat dari ketidakbahagiaan adalah feeling ungrateful, hurting others, depression and loneliness, spiritual pilgrimage.Keywords: theme analysis, pursuit of happiness

Abstract

Abstract. Injustice has been part of life for different ability people, especially for diffabled women in many parts of Indonesia. A diffabled woman writer, Ratna Indraswari Ibrahim, refuses the assumptionand proves on strength and spirit of life in women and diffable people through her works. This studydiscusses Ibrahim’s short stories about women and the life of her diffabled characters. The data sources ofthe study are novelettes by Ratna Indraswari Ibrahim. The data are quotes from the works that talk aboutdiffability. The study was based on understanding and interpretation processes. The study found that theIbrahim’s works discusses the image and strength of the diffabled woman character in defending for herrights. Ibrahim also proves that being diffabled does not necessarily mean constant mercy-seeking anddependence on others. Ibrahim tries to introduce a new paradigm that the diffabled people have the samepontential as the normal people do. The image of diffability is illustrated in her works that are fullyloaded with struggle of both a woman and a diffabled person.Kata kunci: citra, difabel, Ratna Indraswari Ibrahim
