Abstract

This study examines the social adaptation process of the Minangkabau community that migrated and settled in Margahayu District, Bekasi City. Using a descriptive qualitative case study approach, it explores the community’s adaptive strategies in a multicultural social environment. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and participant observation, allowing for detailed accounts of personal experiences and perceptions. Findings reveal that adaptation occurs gradually through social interaction, negotiation of local norms, and intercultural communication. Challenges such as negative stereotypes—particularly the perception of "stinginess"—complicate integration. Nevertheless, Minangkabau migrants maintain their cultural identity while fostering harmonious relationships with local residents. The study concludes that social adaptation is a dynamic, reciprocal process shaped by the communicative competence of migrants and the openness of the host community. These insights contribute to a deeper understanding of how migrant communities negotiate identity and integration in new sociocultural contexts.

Abstract

The film Bumi Manusia, adapted from Pramoedya Ananta Toer’s novel and released in 2019, portrays women through gender roles within indigenous, Indo, and Dutch communities during the Dutch colonial period. Women in the film are frequently depicted as weak and oppressed, reflecting the patriarchal culture of the time. Audience engagement with the film produces diverse interpretations, as viewers respond to how the story communicates women’s social positions and roles. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach to examine feminist representations in the film. Data were collected through documentation, including quotes and visual elements from key scenes that highlight feminist themes. Detailed observation and analysis of the film were conducted to gain deeper insights. Critical discourse analysis, based on Sara Mills’ theory, was applied to understand feminist discourse in visual and textual media. The findings describe feminist values from the perspectives of subject, object, and reader positions. The film demonstrates liberal feminist ideology through women’s struggle and resistance against oppressive gender roles. It also challenges discrimination and advocates for the fulfillment of rights and opportunities for all individuals, including women. Bumi Manusia illustrates how media narratives can reveal, critique, and negotiate gender inequality within historical and cultural contexts.

Abstract

English conversation activities are widely recognized as effective in enhancing students’ speaking proficiency by providing meaningful opportunities for communicative practice in the classroom. This study was conducted in an Indonesian junior high school that offers a supplementary subject called Daily English Conversation, which aims to develop students’ spoken English through various instructional strategies. The purpose of this study was to investigate the teacher’s strategies in teaching English conversation. This research employed a qualitative case study design involving one teacher who taught the Daily English Conversation class as the main participant. Data were collected through classroom observations, documentation, and semi-structured interviews to gain an in-depth understanding of the teaching strategies used. The findings showed that the teacher implemented several strategies, including role-play, pair work, group discussions, and interview activities. These strategies were applied to encourage active student participation, promote authentic communication, and build students’ confidence in expressing ideas in English. The study concludes that the use of varied conversational strategies can effectively create a more interactive and communicative learning environment. Future research is recommended to examine the implementation of similar strategies at different educational levels, investigate their long-term impact on students’ communicative competence, and explore innovative approaches to teaching English speaking skills.

Abstract

Informational texts in public spaces, like railway station, are often provided in English language to serve international visitors. The English version is commonly the result of translation from the original in local language. However, sometimes, a number of mistakes are found in the target texts that can lead to confusion or misunderstanding to the readers. This descriptive qualitative research aimed at measuring the quality of English informational texts provided at the railway stations. For collecting the textual data, a documentation technique was applied. The selected data were then processed through interactive model of data analysis proposed by Miles and Huberman (1994). For measuring the translation quality of the informational texts, the researcher uses the model of translation quality assessment developed by Nababan, Nuraeni, and Sumardiono (2012) which considering accuracy, acceptability, and readabilty as the parameters for scoring. Meanwhile, for the purpose of analyzing the mistakes in the target texts, it used Molina and Albir’s (2002) theory of translation techniques. The results show that, overall, the English translation is considered having good quality as it reaches a total score of 2.70 out of maximum 3 points. Meanwhile, from the total 110 times of use, 11 out of 18 translation techniques were applied by the translator. Borrowing becomes the most frequent technique used, in contrast with description as the rarest. To some extent, the quality of translation is influenced by the choice of translation techniques in the process of translation.

Abstract

This study explores women’s language features in a patriarchal context by analyzing Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s The Yellow Wallpaper through the lens of Robin Lakoff’s (1975) framework. Focusing exclusively on the female narrator, the study examines narrative passages, sentences, and expressions to identify linguistic patterns that reflect social and ideological constraints. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, nine women’s language features were identified: lexical hedges, tag questions, rising intonation, intensifiers, hypercorrect grammar, super‑polite forms, avoidance of strong swear words, precise color terms, and empty adjectives. The findings show that these features serve to convey tentativeness, politeness, emotional expression, and psychological sensitivity, highlighting the narrator’s constrained agency under patriarchal and institutional control, particularly within the context of the rest cure. From a feminist literary perspective, the language simultaneously provides subtle means for resistance and self-expression, revealing how linguistic strategies negotiate power, uncertainty, and emotion. The study underscores the value of combining Lakoff’s sociolinguistic framework with feminist literary theory to examine how language reflects and contests gendered authority in literature. Limitations include the focus on a single narrator and one literary work, suggesting the need for comparative and corpus-based studies across genres and historical contexts. Future research could explore the relationship between women’s language features, narrative perspective, and character agency to further understand how literary language constructs female subjectivity and ideological critique.

Abstract

This study explores the experiences of individuals with visual disabilities who often encounter difficulties in accepting themselves due to their physical conditions. It investigates the process of self-acceptance and the nature of their social interactions within the framework of interpersonal communication. The research specifically aims to understand how interactions with people in their surrounding environment contribute to and support the development of self-acceptance. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, the study involved interviews with four participants with visual disabilities—both low vision and total blindness—as well as three key informants who work as social workers. The interview data were recorded, transcribed, and subsequently coded for analysis. The findings indicate that five key aspects of interpersonal communication—openness, empathy, supportive attitudes, positive attitudes, and equality—play a significant role in fostering self-acceptance among individuals with visual disabilities. Overall, the study contributes to the development of communication studies, particularly in expanding understanding of interpersonal communication in relation to the self-acceptance process of people with visual impairments.
