Abstract

A Day in My Life (ADML) videos are TikTok contents that describe what the TikTokers do in their everyday lives. This research aims to explore how femininity is constructed through ADML videos. By utilizing textual analysis methods, this article highlights how Indonesian female TikTokers affirm or negotiate with the dominant ideology in the society, in this case patriarchal ideology. Research findings reveal that in their content, @sindisafitrii and @gelialinda affirm the patriarchal ideology by constructing the notion of marrying at such a young age due to social factors and culture constructions. Furthermore, they also construct the idea of marriage as “halal” or lawful or permitted under Islamic law. On the other hand, ADML videos by both TikTokers are also ambiguous in portraying the domestic role divisions between husband and wife. On one side, husbands are portrayed to have a balanced gender role with their wives. However, in some videos, the narratives showcase how uncommon it is for husbands to be involved in domestic roles and how they are glorified for doing their chores in the domestic area. Research findings also uncover that these ADML videos portray how women should gain personal financial security; even though they also depict that the reason why the two TikTokers choose to get married at a young age is for financial security. The ambiguous portrayal of how femininity is constructed in both TikTok accounts through their A Day in My Life videos represents how they affirm yet negotiate with patriarchal ideology.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of using the freewriting techniques on the writing ability of Indonesian junior high school students in producing descriptive texts. The study was conducted in a private school located in Banten province and involved 33 students who were selected through a total sampling. A quasi-experimental design was used, with pre- and post-tests serving as the research instruments. The tests were validated for content validity and inter-rater reliability. The results were analyzed using a t-test, which showed that the use of freewriting techniques had a significant positive effect on the writing ability of the students. The t-count (2.533) was higher than the t-table (2.039) at a significance level of 0.05, indicating that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected. The average score of the experimental class was higher than that of the control class, further emphasizing the positive impact of the freewriting techniques. These results suggest that the implementation of freewriting as a teaching techniques has the potential to enhance the writing ability of Indonesian junior high school students.

Abstract

The present study investigated incidental grammar learning through movies, specifically for Korean drama viewers. As they get exposed to the Korean language through the dramas/variety shows that they frequently watch, the possibility of them being aware of how Korean language, or Hangul, works seems to be potentially high. The present study applied a mixed-method approach through an open-ended survey which consists of 13 items. Nine items were closed-ended questions while four items were open-ended questions. This study uses a convenience sampling to gather the respondents. The survey was distributed for a week and responded by 36 respondents. The results of the current study show that the majority of the respondents never received formal lessons of Hangul and got exposed to Hangul only through Korean dramas and variety shows. In addition, the respondents show a sort of awareness toward some Hangul morphological forms like plural markers, closeness markers, and a syntactical aspect. The findings show that through Korean drama watching, the Korean drama viewers seem to notice the language pattern of Hangul. The findings suggest that using movies as a learning platform seems to have a positive impact on language learning.

To find out about at what level neologism in K-Pop fandom on Twitter is formed, the data are collected by sampling tweets of Twitter users who are part of three K-Pop boy group fandom namely Seventeen, Stray Kids and Treasure, who use Vocabulary, Orthography, Grammar and Pragmatic in their tweets using descriptive qualitative methods. The findings reveal that some language aspects in K-Pop fandom share different knowledge from the regular language. The results show that the K-Pop fandom community tend to create neologisms based on the identity of the specific idol they like, not only within the K-Pop fandom itself, which makes it unique.
