Abstract

The present study was conducted to find the extent of the use of social learning strategies (SLS) by Indonesian learners of English as a second/foreign language (L2) from non-English departments. This study employed a sequential explanatory mixed-method design. 125 learners participated in the survey and six participants in the interviews. From descriptive statistics, the study found that generally, learners' use of SLS was at a high level. The majority reported they practised English with their peers, asked their teachers for help and corrections, and ask people to slow their speech down or repeat it if they did not get what was said. From the Thematic Analysis of the interview data, the study found that watching videos and quizzes in L2 classes encouraged learners to ask questions and do relevant discussions with peers. Also, learners mostly asked their peers questions when facing difficulties in L2 vocabulary and pronunciation. Implications included designing activities promoting psychologically safe environments in L2 classes where learners can use their SLS more optimally. Limitations are acknowledged and possible relevant future studies are suggested.

Abstract

This research article delves into the exploration of English pre-service teachers' proficiency in utilizing an artificial intelligence-based application, specifically Quillbot, to enhance reading comprehension within the context of English for Islamic studies. Qualitative data are derived from questionnaire, learning tasks and focus group discussions, which delve into students' perspectives on artificial intelligence for language learning and language teaching. The results indicate that English pre-service teachers adeptly harnessed Quillbot to paraphrase text from articles, effectively enhancing reading comprehension. Beyond paraphrasing, students demonstrated their analytical skills by subjecting Quillbot's output to grammar analysis. Moreover, the study showcased participants' comprehension abilities as they crafted questions and answers rooted in the article's content. Ultimately, the findings underscore the participants' favorable outlook on AI tools for facilitating language learning and teaching, accentuating the positive stance of English pre-service teachers toward integrating AI technologies into language education.

The data collection technique used in this research is through documents which are formal records, books, articles and other information materials that are related to problems or archives. Based on the research results, it can be explained that Maudy Ayunda uses Code-Mixing more often than Najwa Shihab. Maudy Ayunda used 69% code switching and 73% code mixing while Najwa Shihab used 31% Code-Switching and 27% Code-Mixing. The reality is that Maudy Ayunda uses code-switching and Code-Mixing more often because she is a guest speaker invited by Najwa on her YouTube channel so that Maudy speaks more than Najwa Shihab. In addition, Maudy Ayunda has a background where she studied abroad at Stanford University, which makes her usually speak English, resulting in the phenomenon of Code-Switching and Code-Mixing.
