Abstract

The peg is a component that functions as a binder between the shaft and the hub in transmitting power and rotation. In general, the pegs are designed and made using metal materials such as mild carbon steel. In this research, the material of the coupling pin design on the centrifugal pump shaft is S45C. Where on the sample of the designed post, an impact test or the Charpy method of hitting the notch is carried out which aims to determine the amount of resistance to sudden loading and to determine the physical changes (failure modes) experienced by the post material. In this study, the sample of the post with dimensions of 6.10 mm x 6.10 mm x 55 mm obtained a large impact strength (impact strength) in the Charpy method impact test of 0.8445 Joule/mm2. And for the physical change (failure mode) experienced by the post material against the sudden loading, it is a brittle fracture that is characterized by physical characteristics in the form of granular (like sand) on the fracture surface, and the absence of plastic deformation that occurred first.

Abstract

Seeing how great the contribution and potential of the aquaculture sector to the fulfillment of food for the people of Indonesia, the development of aquaculture including the Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS) is very important to be carried out intensively. An important aspect that should be considered for the development of RAS is maintaining water quality as the main medium of cultivation. Optimization of the aquaculture tank is an effort that can be conducted to achieve this goal. A transient numerical study to determine the effect of inlet angle variation on flow conditions inside a circular aquaculture tank was conducted to assess the optimum geometry for the application. Single-phase CFD simulations using the k-ω SST turbulent model were carried out to evaluate the effect of inlet nozzle angle variations. Three angle variations 0°, 45°, and 90° were selected and the resultant fluid flow conditions were analyzed. From the CFD results, it can be known that the optimum condition for the circular aquaculture tank is achieved for the angle 0° among the tested angle in this present study.

Abstract

Aggregat mud affect the weakening of asphalt adhesion and bonds between aggregate grains which will cause damage more quickly before reaching the design age, one of which is the formation of holes in the road surface layer. The purpose of this study was to measure the effect of variations in silt content on the stability and flow values of Asphalt-coated concrete mix (AC-WC). All tests were carried out using the Marshall test method and each test object became the basis for calculations to analyze the stability and flow values of the AC-WC asphalt concrete mixture with variations in silt content of 0%, 5%, 10%, 15% and 20%. The optimal bitumen content used is 6.7%. Furthermore, marshall testing was carried out on variations in silt content in the aggregate to obtain stability and flow values, stability values tended to decrease from 1048.64 kg to 798.96 kg, this affected the minimum stability value of ≥ 800 kg and flow values tended to increase from 1.54 mm to 3.05 mm, but the discharge value still meets the required limit of ≥ 3 mm with a mud content of 13%. Based on the results of the ANOVA analysis obtained from the test, the stability value shows a significant decrease in the level of stability and the flow value shows an insignificant effect on the proportion of sludge.

Abstract

Geopolymers have issues related to cracking resistance and pore filling, decreasing their mechanical strength. However, the addition of nanosilica and Cellulose Nanocrystals (CNCs) has been found to enhance their mechanical properties. This study focused on optimizing the utilization of nanosilica and CNCs to enhance the compressive strength of geopolymers. This research employed Response Surface Methodology (RSM) with Central Composite Design (CCD). The concentrations of nanosilica and CNCs used in the experiments ranged from 2% to 4% and 1% to 3%, respectively. The experimental results consist of 13 runs, including 5 center point runs. The model suggested concentrations of nanosilica and CNCs of 3.98% and 1%, respectively, for an optimal compressive strength of 22.20 MPa. The proposed quadratic model exhibited high accuracy, as evidenced by an R2 of 0.9865, Adj- R2 of 0.9769, and predicted R2 of 0.9168. The closeness of R2 to 1 indicates a strong correlation between the actual and predicted values, thus highlighting the model's significant relevance. Ultimately, the model developed in this study holds the potential for predicting the compressive strength of geopolymers incorporating nanosilica and CNCs.

Abstract

Soft actuators show immense potential in various fields, such as wearable medical devices and the rehabilitation of stroke patients. This study aims to design and fabricate a soft pneumatic actuator (SPA) that effectively mimics human finger movements, with specific focus on post-stroke rehabilitation. Two SPA designs, referred to as M1 and M2, were developed and compared. M1 featured segmented chambers to mimic finger joints, while M2 had continuous chambers. The performance of the SPAs was evaluated based on curvature, generated force, and similarity to natural finger movement. Results showed that M1 exhibited superior curvature and achieved greater bending angles compared to M2 at the same pressure levels. This makes M1 well-suited for applications requiring high bending angles such as gripping. Additionally, M2 demonstrated the ability to mimic specific angles associated with picking-like movements. The findings highlight the potential for further research to explore the customization of SPAs for specialized tasks by modifying the number of sections and chambers. In terms of force, M2 generated slightly higher forces than M1, although the difference was not statistically significant. Overall, it is expected that this research contributes to the development of soft actuators and wearable medical devices, particularly in the field of post-stroke rehabilitation.

Abstract

One of the most potential applications of soft actuator is as wearable medical devices for post-stroke rehabilitation as a field that requires high levels of safety and adaptability. Incorporating SPAs into such devices can provide a safer and more secure solution, ensuring controlled movements that do not pose a risk to patients. However, there is a research gap regarding the design considerations for soft actuators specifically targeting the human thumb, which exhibits distinct motion patterns compared to the other fingers. This paper addresses this gap by developing and evaluating custom-designed SPAs for the movement of the human thumb, with a focus on post-stroke rehabilitation. Three SPA models (M1, M2, and M3) were proposed, and their performance in replicating the twisting motion of the thumb was assessed. The SPAs were fabricated using 3D printing, and image processing software was utilized for measurement and analysis. The results showed that the M3 model, with two sections of chambers in different axes, exhibited the best performance in generating the desired twisting angle. Integration of the M3 model with four finger-shaped SPAs enabled successful grasping and picking-like movements. This research contributes to the advancement of soft actuators in wearable medical devices, particularly in post-stroke rehabilitation, and holds promise for enhancing patient recovery and quality of life.
