Abstract

The objectives of this research are to know whether there is difference of students’ reading comprehension by using PQ4R and SQ3R techniques or not and to find out which one is more effective between PQ4R technique and SQ3R techniques. Kind of this research is a quantitative research. The design of this research is pre-test, post-test control group design, which employs two groups at SMA N 1 Trimurjo. Experimental group is treated by PQ4R technique and Control group by SQ3R technique. Then, the total population are 170 students and 40 students as the sample taken by cluster random sampling. Based on the data analysis, assuming equal test shows that trasio is 2,80 and ttab on 0.01% is 2,70, so µ1 ≠ µ2 ( There is difference result between PQ4R and SQ3R technique). Then by assuming unequal test gives result trasio 2,80 and ttab on 0.01% 2,70, it means trasio (2,80) > ttab (2,70), so µ1 > µ2 ( PQ4R technique is higher than SQ3R technique). From both of calculation, it can be concluded that PQ4R is more affective than SQ3R technique toward students’ reading comprehension in Annalytical Text at elevent grade of SMA N 1 Trimurjo academic year 2015/2016.

The mean score of pretest of the experimental and control group was significantly different after treatment by using Jigsaw II technique. The mean score of posttest of the experimental group was higher than the control group (84.16 > 62.91). Thus, the use of Jigsaw II technique was effective. Besides, all the three levels of comprehension improved after doing treatment; the literal comprehension got the highest improvement was 92.19>76.69. It was followed by inferential comprehension which got 83.75>66.25, and critical comprehension which got76.56 > 42.81.

Abstract

Currently, in teaching a language is claimed to be less effective when the Teaching activities are dominated by the instructor as known commonly teacher oriented. There are a lot of research report exposed that most of students are passive learners and only certain students respond learning activity. This is a marker that students are lazy to think as a form of familiarity is not active in the learning process and the habit of always relying on any material submitted by the teacher. This phenomenon is able to be overcome through one of cooperative learning strategy called Think Pair Share (TPS). This Model of TPS is a strategy whereas the students are demanded to be more active in individual thinking then discuss in pair and sharing in the whole class. This study is one of critical review toward previous research related to the Think-pair-Share strategy. In this case, this study aims to carry out the effect of the Think-Pair-Share implementation in teaching speaking skill. The findings indicate that there is a significant improvement in term of students’ ability in reading English after they are treated using Think-Pair-Share. However, this model requires a patient teacher to the students who has needed more attention.

Abstract

This study aimed at investigating the differences and similarities of sentences pattern in English and Buginese and the approach of this study used namely qualitative, where the contrastive analysis was chosen as the method of the study in comparing and analyzing sentence patterns of both languages. From the analysis, it revealed that the similarities of two languages were: (1) both languages have similar sentences pattern, especially for the verbal simple present tense and verbal and nominal future tense, (2) both languages, have the same elements to construct a sentence (S+V+O). Meanwhile, the differences between both of them were (1) declarative sentence pattern for the nominal simple present tense, and verbal and nominal past tense between two languages is different. (2) There is no such pattern S + Vlinking + Subject Complement in Buginese since Buginese has no verb tobe. (3) In making past sentences in Buginese, it would involve Ergative Pronoun, namely -na, -no, -ni, and their position attached at the end of word pura. Hopefully, these findings can predict the interference would happen during teaching English as a target language with the student who has Buginese as their mother tongue. Furthermore, it is suggested that future researchers could conduct a Buginese language study in different settings, such as pragmatics analysis, morphological system, and phonology system.
