Abstract

Tuba (Derris elliptica) root was used traditionally as a poison to fish catching. This research looks for beneficial of tuba root extract as an anesthetic for the transport of fish seed. This research aims was to explore the value of effective concentration (EC50 - 1 hr) of tuba root extracts by ethanol and hexane, as well as determine the effect of the effective concentration value and the period of transportation time on the survival and growth of common carp seed. Probit analysis used to determine the effective concentration , whereas to determine the effect of differences of periods of transportation (2 , 4 and 6 hours) and the value of the effective concentration of each solvent on the survival and growth of the research design uses factorial analisis. The results of probit analysis for ethanol and hexane solvent are 6.166 and 3.72 ppm. Transportation showed the highest survival rate at treatment of transportation period 2 hour with values reaching an average of 100%, while the highest growth occurres in hexane treatment on the period of transportation of 6 hours. This results also found that the period of transportation differences significantly affect the survival of common carp seeds but has no significant effect on the growth of common carp other results showed that the difference in the solvent not significantly affect the survival and growth of common carp seed.

Abstract

Study on coral recruitment in artificial reefs was carried out in Hari Island, Southeast Sulawesi. Data collection was conducted by calculating the number of genus colony and measuring coral size using visual census method equipped with scuba diving and an underwater camera. The construction of artificial reefs would vertically expand the profile of the survival of juvenile coral recruitment, where 95 new colonies of the recruitment had successfully been observed. Moreover, there were 10 genus of stony coral (Scleractinia) managed to be identified with the abundance proportion of Pocillopora, Acropora, Fungis, Leptoseris, Cynarina, Seriotopora, Acanthastrea, Favites, Montipora, Oxypora. The entire coral recruitment was dominated by genus Pocillopora reaching 80.0%. The coral recruitment in artificial reefs showed that there was potential coral recovery in the island.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Coconut crab (Birgus latro) is  one of the species of crustaceans that economically valuable. The research aimed to investigate habitat characteristics and gonad maturity of Coconut crabs (Birgus latro) in Uta Island, North Mollucas. Sampling was conducted through cruising survey from May to September 2012, while parameters examined to the habitat characteristics and reproductive aspects were physical-chemical, gonad maturity, and vegetation existence. Habitat characteristics were assessed using Cluster Analysis. Result showed that length and weight relationship of male crabs wasW= 1.93 (CP + r), while the female was 1.17W= 1.97 (CP + r) 0.97. During the observation, it showed that mature gonad occurred in all catching time indicating that it didn’t occur simultaneously on the broodstock. The smallest crabs were found 65.44 mm in length (CP + r). There was no significant different of sex ratio between males and females (1:1). Disparity of habitat characteristics in each station doesn’t affect to the catch, both the quantity and level of gonad maturity. Habitat conditions at all stations strongly supported their activities to live sustainably.
